Doctor Who: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe (2011)
Favorite Episode of all time
It's been many years since this episode aired, and I can state firmly, this is my favorite episode. Period. I watch it every year for Christmas. It never fails to make me cry, both tears of sadness and joy in turn.
The acting of the episode is top notch, with a brilliant cast.
Sister Boniface Mysteries: My Brother's Keeper (2022)
Overly Obvious
One thing I'm finding disappointing about these episodes of this series, is how obvious the killers are. 20 minutes in, and they introduce an innocuous character, and that person always ends up being the killer.
The worst was this episode, they couldn't have made it more obvious by having the assistant talk about growing up without a father, then two scenes later, talking about how the artist caused a man to kill himself 20 years before, leaving behind a wife and young child. Why are the scripts so much better for Father Brown if it's basically the same team.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Blue Carbuncle (1984)
A Sherlockian Christmas
The story of the Blue Carbuncle and ultimate solution are top notch, it's just the acting of some of the bit parts that let things down. Particularly at the beginning, which makes it hard to get into until the action starts. I'm not sure what the actress that played the countess was on at the time, but she seemed likely she wasn't even trying or that she was 1/2 asleep. Was the monotone she used a deliberate choice, or did she regret taking the part so much, she couldn't even be bothered. Perhaps it was all done deliberately, but everything about her performance made it seem like someone writing it in.
The rest of the episode is amazing. The innocent former thief, trying to give his family a good Christmas, only to be unjustly accused. An actual GOOSE being a major plot point is so amusingly different, you have to appreciate it.
You also have to as always, give the show massive props for their realistic portrayal of Victorian Britain. It's fabulous wealth, along side middle class and poor, it's dirty and gritty, its chaotic. Every detail is seen to, costumes, hair, background action, the set design. It's the way television is MEANT to be seen.
Queens of Mystery: Murder in the Dark: First Chapter (2019)
Quirky, but extremely familiar....
It's off-beat, quirky, and has a uniquish storytelling format. I say 'ish', because anyone who watched Pushing Daisy's would remember the style. Dead mother, mystery solving main character, 'sane' unseen narrator, quirky family/friends.
Gunpowder (2017)
Just more torture porn
Yet another series that is basically the SAME formula seen in EVERY series these days. Let's see how much torture, violence and gore we can show. Then make sure you stretch out the violence much as possible, showing every single moment of pain. Boring because you can pretty much find the same thing in every new show these days.
The story-line is incidental, it's all an excuse for the violent parts.
