Reviews
The Newsreader (2021)
The best show I've watched in years is Australian and it's called The Newsreader
I haven't written a review in ages but I felt like I needed to express my appreciation for this show in some humble way after just finishing the second season which, miraculously, managed to live up to my high expectations.
I consider this show a bit of a hidden gem, especially because I discovered it completely by coincidence. It's difficult to put into words what an intense viewing experience it is. The backdrop setting of a 80's newsroom is so delicious it feels like it could have been written for me personally. The rise and decay of these characters, especially the two leads BRILLIANTLY portrayed by Anna Torv and Sam Reid, is extremely captivating.
I'll be (im)patiently waiting for the announcement of a third season because there needs to be one.
Love, Victor (2020)
Review of the 3rd season
This entire season felt like it was going around in circles. By the end, I still wasn't sure what I was supposed to have learned about the characters or what to feel. A quick overview of the storylines this season:
Mia and Andrew. Literally the same old story of Andrew putting his every need aside for Mia and basically being the perfect boyfriend (without being much else) while Mia is struggling with her connection - and lack of connection - to her family. EXACTLY the same thing as last season.
Lake and Lucy. One thing is how quickly their relationship progressed, but it made my head spin how quickly Lake fell for Lucy without us having seen ANY interaction between them prior to last season's finale. Sure, they were cute. But using the typical scenario of bravely breaking up because one of the characters is moving away just seems so tired and certainly not made to appear any less unoriginal by the fact that Mia and Andrew were dealing with the EXACT same thing at the same time.
Felix and Pilar. Again, they were cute and I actually thought their conflict was, if not good, probably the best one out of the weak choices. I understood Felix' dilemma and Pilar's frustration with feeling he chose her family over her. But it was wrapped up kind of badly and very abruptly.
Victor and Benji. Without a doubt the least functioning relationship on the show and yet the writers chose to have them broken up the ENTIRE season instead of proving why they were even supposed to be worth saving. The decision to have Victor forget about Rahim in 0,5 seconds and then bring in a third guy just seemed so odd. Especially because they then built Victor and Nick up in a way that actually kind of made me vote for them. They were certainly good for each other and seemed to grow in each other's company (even if Nick remained a half-empty shell of a character). I understand that first love often makes for the more "epic" story. But only if the characters are shown to actually make sense together.
Also, the way the broken relationships were all quickly resolved like pearls on a string in the finale was almost a little comedic and certainly didn't feel authentic. Overall, the entire season felt very lackluster.
Notting Hill (1999)
Me and my dad's favourite romantic film
We're not fans of romantic films in general but we both love this one. I'm slightly annoyed that I'm charmed by Hugh Grant but I guess it's what God intended. My dad hates Pretty Woman so from that I've deducted that Hugh Grant must be his reason, also.
Succession: All the Bells Say (2021)
Magnificent
This is turning out to be one of my favourite shows - not just of the decade but ever. A masterpiece that somehow manages to only grow more impressive and meaningful with each episode. I'm simply not used to this level of being the opposite of disappointed.
Kastanjemanden (2021)
Overall: Very entertaining but nothing deeper than that
They've checked every box in the standard "Nordic noir" formular. Two grumpy detectives who aren't happy about their jobs in the first place are forced to work with each other and they're not happy about it. Add a couple of gruesome murders and a bit of politics because there's nothing that haunts us as much as our beloved welfare society in Scandinavia, apparently.
Strangely, it all kind of worked and didn't make me as annoyed as I expected to be. I guess there's a formular for a reason. I was extremely entertained from beginning to end. But sadly it's also the kind of story that takes a couple too many liberties in terms of realism. Just a little bit less delusions of grandeur would have been suitable in order to maintain a level of believability.
The Hitcher (2007)
Tame and purposeless
They really had the audacity to take a flawless classic and make a heterosexual version.
Den som dræber - Fanget af mørket (2019)
My review is about the second season, a separate story from the first.
It was surprisingly entertaining and well-acted. It has a very refreshing story of a serial killer who targets male victims. It's kind of similar to the british The Fall (2013) in its structure in the way that we know who the killer is from the beginning but that doesn't take from the suspense. Towards the last couple of episodes there were some serious plotholes which annoyed me... When it's only one or two I can ignore it, but they started to pile up. However, I can still fully recommend this series because it was entertaining from beginning to end.
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Damn
Best plot twist I've seen in a long time. I cannot stress enough how important it is to not read any reviews or spoilers before watching this. You might find the pacing a little slow at times (at least I imagine some people would) but personally I liked it. I'll take a slow burn over too quick and messy pacing any day of the week. And just know that either way, the ending will make it all worthy of your time.
Perfect Sense (2011)
I came here with one sole purpose
And that is to say that the film's soundtrack by Max Richter is perhaps my favourite soundtrack of any film, ever. Plenty of lovely things have been said about this film already and I only recently rewatched it after several years. But I've kept coming back to Richter's haunting melodies year after year.
God's Own Country (2017)
The level of intimacy between the characters is unlike anything I have seen before
Absolutely stunning film that is now right up there among my all-time favourites. It's sensual and romantic; and raw and ugly at the same time which is actually quite an accomplishment. The partnership between O'Connor and Secareanu is incredibly effective; the magnificent Ian Hart made me cry and Gemma Jones is amazing as well. Along with a breathttaking scenery and the haunting melodies of A Winged Victory for the Sullen, it's truly a film to remember and cherish.
