Into the Dark: My Valentine (2020)
Where are the good writers?
I absolutely love the Into the Dark movies. We look forward to them every single month. But what the heck has happened to the writing? It's just been awful as of late. The New Years episode was boring and the Valentine's Day episode was so dumb.
What happened to the ones like "All That We Destroy" or "Pooka" or most of the first season and the beginning of the second season? Those episodes had some truly talented writers and directors. Can Blumhouse, Hulu and anyone else involved just settle down and write some good basic stories? We don't want flash and dazzle, we want Twilight Zone basic dark stories.
After Darkness (2014)
Getting a bad rap
I do not understand the many one star ratings. This movie has good production values and excellent actors. Yes, it is a little slow but it's intense.
It kept my interest and I was always trying to anticipate what was going to happen next. Is it horror? I don't know. Horror is so subjective. My personal opinion is that it's more of a family psychological drama. Regardless, it does not deserve this low rating. It isn't a "B" movie. Give it a try
Welcome Home (2018)
Snooze Fest
Bottom line is this film is boring. I wouldn't even consider it a good drama. It is slow, uninteresting and dull. Don't waste your time on this. We watched it for Aaron Paul and even he couldn't save this poor script. So slow and nothing happens. Main actress is horrific. Save your time and watch anything other than this dreck. Snooze fest from beginning to end
Fractured (2016)
Nice Little Thriller
We enjoyed this thriller or mystery. Acting was good although the characters seemed a bit over the top, we still liked it. Definitely makes you think twice about helping out strangers. Well done!
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Not worth your time
Massachusetts family beset with tragedy. The family is dysfunctional, but not in an interesting or tragic way. Blah, blah, blah.....more filler. Casey Affleck mumbles through his lines. Attempts tp show a close knit, weird Boston family. Blah, blah, blah...more filler. The end.
There might be a bit more to the story than I've let on but it's the same ole same ole. A complete snooze fest. When will Casey Affleck stop mumbling??
77 Minutes (2016)
Cringe Worthy
This is a "documentary" about the massacre at the San Ysidro McDonald's in 1984. It was a horrific attack at a McDonald's by some crazy guy. This in itself is worthy of a documentary.
But the director, Charlie Minn, decides to insert himself in the story and that's why I give it such a low score. It's not JUST that Mr. Minn blames the police, it's his interview techniques and his weird way of focusing the camera on himself. So weird. Minn is trying to play Monday morning quarterback 35 years later and it's embarrassing......for him.
This was a horrific massacre that should have been made into a fascinating documentary in the hands of a more skilled and less egotistical director.
Have You Seen Andy? (2007)
Heartbreaking
How can a child just disappear? Recently caught this documentary streaming and was so shocked and saddened by this case. If you like true crime, this is a film for you.
As for the documentary itself, it suffers a bit from age. I think the events could have been put in chronological order for those of us completely unfamiliar with the case. Which, unfortunately, is most of the US. The recordings of a convicted pedophile will haunt me forever. As for the police investigation, I would like to know more.
Regardless, I think we need a documentary about this case and the child sex ring that was prevalent in Massachusetts at this time. Something bad was going on in Massachusetts and we need someone that isn't involved in the case to shed some light as to what was going on in this area. Hopefully, someone with a bigger budget can investigate and we might have a fascinating documentary.
American Fable (2016)
Refreshing
I truly loved this movie. It isn't refreshing in the sense that it is uplifting, but refreshing, in that it's a good film. Acting is amazing. Storyline is a mix of mystery and drama. Is it horror? I think so. No blood and guts but horror to me is being put into a situation which induces total and complete dread. This film did that for me. Set in a rural area so if that doesn't interest you, it might be boring. But the themes of family, loyalty, survival and morality are spotlighted here.
Raze (2013)
Awful
The synopsis explains the whole movie completely. Read the synopsis and you've watched the movie. I have no problem with repeated themes of movies but this was just the same old same old story. Acting was okay. Sound was okay. Cinematography was okay. Just a violent girl trying to survive and escape flick.
Slumber (2017)
Bad dreams
If you are like me, you just want to be entertained for a few hours and Slumber fits the bill. Slumber isn't an awful movie, it isn't a great movie but the production is good and the acting is good. Not a bad way to spend a few hours.
The Suffering (2016)
Creepy atmosphere
The beginning of the film was creepy and had all the hallmarks of a good horror or mystery. Unfortunately, it becomes jumbled with too many story lines crammed into one film. It's worth a watch for the atmosphere and creep factor. It doesn't feel like a "B" movie so not a bad way to spend a few hours.
Outcast (2016)
Must see!
Outcast on Cinemax is one of the best horror, psychological dramas on tv right now. I was hooked from the beginning and can't stop watching. A very unusual take on "possession". Is it possession or something else. Acting is spot on. Truly one of the best series right now
Demon House (2019)
Inflated reviews
Saw many 10/10 reviews for the movie and noticed that these reviewers have only reviewed one movie and that's Demon House.
The movie is average at best. I would wait and watch it for free. I wish reviewers would stop trying pad a movies ratimgs. It just detracts from the film in the long run
Le dernier prince rouge (2017)
Fascinating
Very informative documentary on Kim Jong Un. The film goes into some depth as to how Kim Jong Un came to power and possibly the psychology of why he behaves the way he does. Tons of footage of the family and official state propaganda. Definitely worth a watch.
Speed Demons (2018)
Slow
A very slow moving, one sided documentary on the use of stimulants. The narrator drones on and on in a sleep inducing monotonous voice. I was hoping for an interesting character study on Myron May but this barely covered him.
Atomic Homefront (2017)
Shocking
We were shocked to find out that radioactive material from the Manhattan Project was dumped in and around St. Louis. This isn't your average documentary and it isn't just another environmental rant.
This documentary highlights the continuing plight of residents that surround this dump area. It also shows how an underground fire is encroaching on the buried radioactive material. Also shows that the buried material is hazardous on its own. The government does not seem to care. Republic Services (Bill Gates is a major shareholder) which owns the landfill does not care. The EPA doesa not care. Simply heartbreaking
February (2015)
Frightening
I had this movie on my watchlist for a long time along with The Witch. I didn't watch either of them because the title "The Blackcoat's Daughter" made me think it was a period piece along the lines of The Witch. Strangely, A24 wanted the name changed from February to The Blackcoat's Daughter which actually turned me away from the film. Anyhow, this film terrified me and I couldn't have been more clueless.
Some say The Blackcoat's Daughter is a slow burn but it isn't. The horror is there from the very beginning. Sit with this movie and quietly watch. It isn't cerebral, pretentious or artsy, it's just a darn good scary story. Watched it several times and STILL find something new every single time I watch it.
Innocents Abroad (1991)
Lighthearted Fun
This documentary is a lighthearted look at several Americans from all different states and all different backgrounds take a bus tour through the major European cities.
It's fun to see how they react to different cultures. The documentary does not make fun of them in anyway shape or from. It's just a refreshing look at how outsiders perceive the culture they are in. The tour operators and guides are extremely kind and accommodating.
Just an interesting documentary that looks at tourism from both sides.
Lord Lucan: My Husband, the Truth (2017)
Fascinating
I happen to catch this documentary on Amazon. I had never heard of Lord or Lady Lucan. What a fascinating story it is. Murder, gambling, sex, custody battles, wealthand royalty all rolled up into one.
I found Lady Lucan's interviews so interesting and completely forthcoming. She doesn't hide who she is and it's kind of refreshing.
The home movies are amazing and we get a glimpse into what life is like for the wealthy or not so wealthy lifestyle.
So did Lord Lucan murder the nanny and try to kill his wife? Or was it a random intruder? Or did Lady Lucan plan all of this herself? Where is Lord Lucan now? So many questions!
Jordan (2010)
Boring
Plot is about a little girl on a road trip with her mother. They have an accident and the littler girl gets help. The mom eventually shows up and the little girl claims that the woman that show up is not her mom.
I'm not sure how this film was labeled a psychological thriller or even drama. It's very slow moving and the characters are so uninteresting that you will probably find yourself doing something else during the movie like playing soduko . It isn't a bad movie if you can watch it for free while doing laundry but I wouldn't waste any other time on it. Also, the background noise is so loud that one can barely hear the conversations.
They Look Like People (2015)
Creepy
I grew up in the 70's and 80's and was blessed to grow up with some of the best horror movies ever made. Therefore, it's easy to be harsh on some current horror films. But to my surprise, I've been watching some really good films. This is one of them.
It's an excellent indie horror/psychological drama film. Loved the tension and dread you feel while watching. It is a slow burn but in a good way. If you are into psychological drama/horror films, this one is definitely for you. Others films like it, The Machinist, The Babadook, Creep
Slasher.com (2017)
Not the Worst
I agree with other reviewers that the music is atrocious, just awful and ruins the movie. Also, I wish low budget films would STOP using a flashing screen. If you have to use a flashing screen to get a mood across, you've already failed. It's almost as if this director has more equipment to make a film than he needs and tries to use it to mask lack of creativity.
For an Independent film, it isn't the worst I've seen. I thought the film looked good and the acting wasn't horrible. The plot isn't that original and the movie is slow. But all in all not a bad effort.
It (2017)
Disappointed
I truly do not understand the high rating on this film. Is it from people that never read the book or from people that are easily scared?
I know it is difficult to transfer King's novels to screen. Anyone that is an avid reader of King's knows this. I liked IT back in the day but I didn't love it like many. It just didn't thrill me like other King stories. I mean it's about a clown. Even back when it it came out, it wasn't about the clown. It's about the kids and his or her fears. And the movie totally missed the mark.
Don't waste your money. The film is awful. It's like a B movie with good cinematography. Don't waste your time or money
Warcraft (2016)
Trailer park version of Lord of the Rimgs
I cannot express enough how bad this movie is. It is a horrible combombulation of bad CGI and bad acting. The script could have been written by a six year old. Too much fluff and not enough substance. In other words, it is kind of like a comic book movie but without the cool characters behind it.
Actually now that I've watched it completely, it's a disgusting attempt at at a cross between Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and some kind of comic book movie. Do not waste your time or money on this drivel. I do not think I can even call it a "movie". It is a video game, trying to be a movie and it fails miserably. Bad. Just bad.
The Boy (2016)
Surprised at the high score
As this is a horror movie, I expected very little. I'm not a slash and dash horror lover but in this movie I kept hoping Chucky would show up and beat the crap out of these morons. Truly, it's like a British Chucky that isn't as fun or interesting. Movie had okay effects, dark lighting, even sound. It's definitely not a B-movie but it isn't excellent. Rest of my friends that watched it, liked it and said it was decent horror. Maybe I've become too critical but I digress. It's apparently worth a watch. Don't expect your mind to be blown and this movie to rock your world. I would barely consider it horror. On the flip side, no nudity or foul language. Have a watch and enjoy it for what it is. Cheers!
