Kacher Manush (2022)
Hopelessly pathetic, wastage of money & time
Wanted to watch a standard Bengali movie during this Puja. Took my family alongwith. The plot was weak from the beginning but the first half was bearable with some good moments specially the romantic ones and strong acting from Bumbada and Esha. The songs are good and shot very well. But after the interval, nothing can pull up the crappy load of pathetic screenplay and storyline. Nothing was sincere and convincing. Every minute i was praying to the movie god " ar choras na, ar choras na". But alas. By that time, director was grappling to find any tiny bit of story left to be screened but couldn't find one. So, 'golper goru totokhone gach chere akashe'. Nothing could have saved the movie by then, not even the strong casting. Such a pathetic waste of resources. Couldn't even stay on our seats till the end. Expectations shattered, time and money wasted. But nothing came close to the sadness to feel sorry for the unfortunate fall of Bengal cinema. Bengali directors and filmmakers seem to have lost every connection with their audience and even reality. Painful.
Pada (2022)
A well-paced political thriller depicting real India
No gimmick,no flashy scenes. Just straight forward stroy telling and depicting a real life story while preserving its present day relevance to its wholeness. This is a gem of a movie; after a longtime which is gripping and thrilling at the same time. It should be watched and suggested to others so that others can also watch it.
Jai Bhim (2021)
The courage to take this as a subject and presenting it deserves standing ovation
As a mainstream movie, taking up a complex and controversial subject such as this and to portray Justice Chandru's life and struggle makes the movie a must watch. Cinematically the movie might have been made a bit more intense whereas the movie, as a biopic will remain in the history forever.
Sardar Udham (2021)
Best Indian movie made on life of a freedom fighter till date
Goosebumps; brilliant representation of history. Unlike any Indian movie made on freedom struggle or life of any freedom fighter, this one has actually captured the context, personal evolution and ideology of a freedom fighter instead of representing a larger than life image full of patriotic fervor and bravado. This is a gem of modern Indian cinema and hats off to Soojit Sirkar. Excellent work.
Murder in the Hills (2021)
Finally some thriller in Bengali
The majority of Bengali thrillers made in West Bengal except Feluda & Byomkesh are quite bland and predictable. The murderer gets revealed in the beginning; with either with the face kept out of focus or not shown but all focus being on the murderer's tattoo or some kind of mannerism or the murder weapon even murderer's birthmark, the whole investigation only circles around finding out that. The motive of any character gets cleared out so early that the only person scratching his/her head till climax is the investigator in the movie/series. By that time, the audience gets busy texting, internet surfing or even kissing in the corner seat of the last row. So it was quite clear to me that whatever we can produce, the thriller is not our cup of tea. Even more tragic in the case of the Bengali OTT platforms is when someone gets lured by the trailer. The editor was good so was the trailer but that doesn't do anything to work out a weak screenplay.
This one, I mean, Murder in the Hills, after decades, made me watch till the end of the last episode because even if a Feluda-trained mind could find some scattered patterns and identify some probable murderers, here the plot remains unclear till the climax. And that's very unlikely of any Bengali thriller made out of an original storyline and screenplay, as I can't remember any such in quite a long time. Though the concept is a bit old-styled that is already said at the beginning of the series: "Revenge is the best dish better served cold". The only thing which took out some marks from the screenplay is two very coincidental discoveries though those didn't prove to be that crucial as they didn't spoil the mystery and climax in any way. So, in all respect, we have finally got a Bengali thriller made in West Bengal after quite a long time. And Darjeeling comes as the bonus; neither through unnecessary jump-cuts of Mall, Glenary's, Revolver, Toy train, tea-gardens, spiraling roads nor through long shots of Kanchanjungha; but its people. That's a joy to watch. In nutshell, it is a commendable job done.
Abhay (2019)
Openly Apologize and withdraw the scene
Showing Martyr khudiram Bose's potrait as a wanted criminal is just reflective of the north indian hindi mentality which served british raj for long and still is serving
Bulbbul (2020)
Worth watching, original story and great acting with a strong idea
As children, we all have heard and read fantasies about 'Shakchunni', 'Petni', 'Daini' or 'Churel' which demonizes women. Even in present-day India, there are incidents of women being lynched while alleging them to be 'daini'/ 'dain'. None might have thought that those fantasies, those stories could be reclaimed. As a debutant, presenting a strong feminist idea within a mythical fairytale-like horror story plot surely makes the director Anvita Dutt deserve all the praise.
While most Netflix original movies are badly made, Bulbbul even with many of its flaws and predictability, is worth watching. And apart from the representation, the actors especially Rahul Bose, Parambrata & Paoli Dam are gems.
