My Fake Fiancé (2009)
Predictable? Absolutely
I was watching this last night while trying to avoid actually finishing my American Lit homework, and I have to say, while it is a romantic comedy, and we all know how predictable they are, this one was actually pretty clever. Every turn I knew what was going to happen, but the filmmakers made it in such a way that you forgot that it was being predictable, and I think that's what succeeded for it. It will most likely never join the ranks of "When Harry Met Sally" or "10 Things I hate About You" in terms of romantic comedy classics, but standing on its own, it was an endearing film that shows that when you marry, you're not marrying one other person, you're marrying their entire family. It is a family movie, but all in all, a cute one.
Mamma Mia! (2008)
Those who can't do...critique?
I think this film is amazing. It's just all kinds of fun. Forget that Pierce Brosnan can't really sing (incidentally, the second time I saw this, and the numerous times I've listened to the soundtrack, he's kind of grown on me), and that the cinematography is horrid. It shouldn't matter. It's a fun movie with a fabulous cast of characters, and dazzling Greek scenery. For a great escapist film, "Mamma Mia" is the one to rent! I think everyone can relate to Sophie, wanting to know who her father is, thinking that's where her future lies. Or with Donna, whose past comes back to haunt her in the form of three flings from back in the day. But lucky for both of them, they each have two supportive best friends (who are carbon copies of each other. Donna=Sophie, Rosie/Tanya=Lisa/Ali), and for Donna, an entire Greek Chorus telling her what she wants is right in front of her face. It's a nice throwback to classic theater that way. Love this movie, no matter what people say!
Atonement (2007)
Absolutely stunning film...especially if you read the novel
I've only seen this film twice. Once in the theater and the second time with friends, only one besides me who had read the novel. The friends who hadn't read the novel were utterly confused throughout most of it, especially at the beginning, because there really isn't a lot of character development. To honestly appreciate this film, make sure you read the book. It opens up so many doors to understanding it. Overall, a brilliant adaptation, however. Joe Wright is a wonderful director, and Seamus McGarvey's cinematography was stunning. But my absolute favorite part was the pairing of typewriter keys in the music, and Dario Marianelli's Oscar was well deserved.
The Magic of Ordinary Days (2005)
Beautiful
This is a really sweet movie of love that is found through respect and friendship. Livy has gotten pregnant by a soldier who has been sent to war. Her father, ashamed of his daughter's illegitimate pregnancy, makes an arrangement for her to marry a farmer named Ray Singleton. Ray respects that Livy doesn't want to be with him, but he tries to do everything he can to make her happy.
It's really sweet how they grow to love each other. Things are awkward at first, but as they grow used to each other, they grow to love each other's habits. I loved this movie. It was a wonderful movie.
**** out of ****
Kvitebjørn Kong Valemon (1991)
Sweet, really
The first time I saw this movie, I was ten years old. After my grandmother's death(it was her movie), this movie went to my aunt, and I have just now gotten the chance to see it again(I'm 19). I don't see why people think this movie is horrible. Yes, the acting is dry, yes, the storyline is corny, but you know what? That's what makes a story interesting. I am a die-hard romantic, and Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite fairy tale. This is just a retelling of it, and honestly, it is a sweet story. The locations kind of remind me of the Princess Bride, and while I think the witch's demise could've been done a lot better, it's the things like that that should be overlooked to see what lies beneath the surface. A sweet retelling of a favorite fairy tale.
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Mr. Darcy...
Mr. Darcy is that he is incredibly kind, handsome and caring person. He also had more guts than most men. He knew what Elizabeth thought of him(or if he didn't, he had a pretty good idea) and yet he still pursued her. I think that's why I like him so much. But this entire film was done so well, I can't think of why they're trying to remake it again with Keira Knightly(although I'll probably see that one too, just because I love the story so much). If you are having trouble reading the book, I would suggest seeing this version of the movie, as it is very close to the actual novel, and it might help to add more of a picture to your mind while reading it. I absolutely love this movie!!! You must see it.
The Notebook (2004)
There are just some things that have to be true
I first saw this movie opening weekend with my parents at a theater in Kansas City. My dad thought it was okay, and did cry, my mom really liked it, but didn't cry. I thought it was one of the most beautiful love stories I'd ever seen and cried. The second time I saw it was with my best friend, who cried, as well. The love depicted in this movie is one that everyone should be lucky enough to have. If love like this doesn't exist in real life, and you can't be madly in love until the day you die, what is the point of falling in love in the first place? I give it a 10/10 and also intend to see it again. Just because I live my life vicariously through characters like this.
Return to Me (2000)
Oh, Sweet mystery of life at last I've found thee...Destiny, that is.
I saw this movie with my mother, and I loved it! It was such a sweet story, (Not to mention funny because of the supporting cast!) They never make movies like this...ever! My favorite part is when Grace(Minnie Driver) finds out about her boyfriend's wife's death, and that she has the deceased wife's heart and she screams, "WHAT WAS GOD THINKING?" I do believe everyone(No matter who you believe in) has thoughts like that once in awhile. But while it's very sappy, it just might make you believe in true love and destiny for once and for all.(Sigh)
The comedic timing between Bonnie Hunt and Jim Belushi will just make you crack up(especially in the aforementioned scene, it's terrible, and yet so funny!). They make a good pair, and I hope to see them again in something soon. 10/10 Stars
