Booksmart (2019)
What's with critics and this movie?
Is it tough times for critics? Could they be getting kickbacks for positive reviews? That is the only way to explain the countless raving "professional" reviews for this sophomoric drivel. From the creepy long shots lingering on teenage bodies (lots of up the shots) in the swimming pool to the idiotic dance Scene that seems to be prerequisite for quite a few movies associated with Will Ferrell, this movie really tapped into those hackneyed techniques. Visually pretty, good trailer, and a few refreshing characters introduced (then not developed effectively), but downright irritating much of the time. The rest left us shaking our head in how "unfunny" it all was, hard as it seemed to try. I'm not sure how the screenplay got through to production unless this was actually written for a jr. High school audience.
Peep Show (2003)
Brilliant
As an expat brit, I somehow missed peep show even though it has been running for almost a decade. Then it appeared on Netflix, and it is now the top rated TV comedy. Who says the yanks don't have a sense of humour?
Anyway, we've watched all seasons over back to back nights ending with the great Christmas lunch and new years party wrap up.
I miss all the characters, instantly. It is a trip to go back to episode 1 season 1 and see how young they looked then, way back in 2003 or whenever. Mark actually developed something of a spine over the seasons, and Jes managed to spend a number of episodes actually working. sort of. wow.
Anyway if you liked The Office, or CYE, or found bits of big bang theory amusing, or Seinfeld, or Extras, or anything even a little bit dark then Peep Show is the place to be.
Kimssi pyoryugi (2009)
Excellent
As the minutes tick by the similarity to the Tom Hanks movie evaporate, leaving nothing.
If you insist on finding western movies of a similar title to compare it to, you'd find more parallels in Moon (2009).
It is quite unique: very satisfying. As weirdly nourishing as the dish featured in the story.
Just watch it. There isn't much to say without undermining the impact.
Unfortunately the guidelines on IMDb require me to say some more so I'll add that in a few key places I wish the sub-titling was more comprehensive. The acting, in particular the girl, was excellent. Leaves one with a certain "mood" that does not dissipate quickly after the movie finishes.
