The Physician (2013)
Beautiful movie, historically inaccurate
All things considered I recommend this movie, It's picturesque and captivating. The music is very beautiful as well. And hands down to Ben Kinsly as always! It is a beautiful movie. The actors are brilliant and the story is very captivating. For once I didn't feel wretched when foreign cinema has tried to show Persia. At least Persians were speaking Persian even though they looked like Arabs. The illustrations that were used as the school material were the exact replicas of what remains from Ibn Sina and what you can see in his great book. That said the movie is very wrong in historical facts. What was supposed to be Isfahan looked nothing like it, but I suppose that's too much to expect. First the whole time line is wrong, Ibn Sina lived during the ruling of Saljugi dynasty and was caught up in their wars. He had to be on the run all the time for most of his life. The most important blunder of the movie which was quite central to the storyline is that Ibn Sina did not practice autopsy! He did! It was considered a sin so he had to steel corpses during the night. It is one of the reasons why people didn't like him. I have not read the book, I am talking about real documented history about him so maybe this blunder can be blamed on the book. I don't know!
A nagy füzet (2013)
A brilliant movie about the cruelties of life
The film is not only beautiful to watch but also very deep. It shows the cruelties of the war through the life of two twin brothers that are left to the care of a non forgiving grandmother during the war. They are so innocent and so good but that has to change because their new place is very cruel. People are cruel, environment is cruel and everything is even harsher because of the World War II. So they decide to overcome their weaknesses by fronting their fears. They are in the end successful in that. They become as cruel as the place they are left in and they refuse to leave their once detested grandmother to live with their loving mother. They even use their father's life to get to their own end. Overall a very moving, very real depiction of war time. The audience does not have to endure graphic violence scenes, but the violence is conveyed through the stern faces and determined behaviour of the two very young boys who are identical to look at, which makes it all the more memorable.
Quills (2000)
This movie is one of a kind
I started to watch this movie without ever having heard of Marquis de Sade, so the opening scene of the movie caught my attention quite shockingly. The subtle way Kaufman maintained the balance between all the important characters without forcing any judgment on the audience is simply brilliant. The film ventures into a very sensitive topic: the sexuality of human beings and its limits, but still manages to stay away from being a movie about sex or a graphic display of Marquis' ideas. Instead the movie is focused on the personalities and what a society on the verge of enlightenment goes through. How a few out-runners break taboos and the freedom-thirsty crowd follows. It is also about different layers there are to people. For example Abbe the priest who is much more liberal in his conduct with the Marquis, Madeleine and all the other patients although he is a priest and very much chastised to the extent that !SPOILER ALERT! the conflict he struggles with in his brain derives him to insanity. I need to mention that Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Abbe was exceptional. I believe this was his best performance and also the best performance in the movie which is filled with great actors who portray layered and complicated characters. In contrast to Abbe is doctor Royer-Collard who is openly averted by the Marquis but yet practices some dominant and sadistic behavior with his wife and patients. He is supposed to be a scientist but he is only using this title as an excuse to commit atrocities. Madeleine is an interesting character in her turn since she remains somewhat unexplained. She seems to be attracted to the Marquis stories but does not indulge in his sexual fantasies with him, instead she goes to Abbe who is the exact opposite of Sade to seek passion. Also her role in the whole movie is very daring and she seems to be in a great danger both because she loves Abbe and because she likes Marquis. I enjoyed the movie a lot and recommend it to not young adults but to more mature audience.
En kongelig affære (2012)
Very good movie, very subtle but powerful
I really liked the approach of the director in not focusing her efforts on showing the glamor and the grace of a royal family. In other words the movie is focused on the deeds and the personality of characters rather than the royalty and the appearance of them. The exact opposite of a movie like Elisabeth or The Duchess. SPOILER ALERT! When the film started it dragged me immediately because it is from the point of view of a woman. Her blind marriage and a disappointing husband who does not appreciate her qualities drives her to solitude. The king has some psychological problems and when a progressive doctor is hired to help him, the king becomes quite dependent on him. The queen also is attracted to the doctor since he is all that she needs in a man. It is really sad that she has to sleep with a man she does not like to cover her second pregnancy. The movie attracted all my empathy when all the hard-won reforms the doctor made throughout time, are reversed by conservative royal relatives and the queen is expelled without the right to ever see her children. What is very nicely done in the course of the movie is that no character is black or white. Everyone fights for what they judge to be valuable. All the characters are like real people who have to compromise even cheat to make what they believe to be their right possible.
Snow Queen (2002)
Bad acting, bad story telling, disappointing
I started watching the movie expecting to watch something magical and beautiful. Instead I found myself watching a very weak movie with really bad acting from all the actors. The story line is not attractive at all as is expected of a movie based on a fairy tale so full of magic and warmth of love. And it is unnecessarily long. I am a fan of fantasy and I really like watching mysterious characters. The snow queen by itself has the potential to be beautiful, terrible and mysterious. The snow queen of the movie is just like a teenager and does not convey the sense of superiority a queen from a fairy tale should have. I do not recommend this movie if you are a fan of fantasy genre because you will be the most disappointed.
