The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Quite good in general, but not as good as Haunting of the Hill House
The storyline evolves quite slowly I would say, but if you sleep through the first third of the series, you're up for an awakening. Much of the mystery gets explained closer to the 2nd half and then it gets quite interesting.
But what is it with playing Hide and Seek in the creepy old houses at night time?
El hoyo (2019)
Stupid gore movie pretending to have a deep meaning
It's just another stupid gore movie that has nothing to show except for some stomach-revolting scenes that has no baseline for meaning and is totally non-sensical.
Don't waste your time.
Dracula (2020)
They should have stopped at Episode 1
Here's my short recap of the total series (no spoilers):
Episode 1: Wow, this is revolutionary, even beats Coppola's on few accounts. Episode 2: Well, hmmm, ok that's weird, but let's see what happens next.
Episode 3. What just happened? Are you kidding me? Seriously?
I really wish they just stopped at Episode 1, the whole episode is almost 1.5 hrs long, so it would have made a nice standalone telenovela. I really watched Episode 1 in awe: it's both funny and brutal, and the whole take on the Dracula story is really really exciting, with some sound acting and a line of eye-catching characters unfolding. But...
Episode 2 started turning weird and Episode 3 puts everything on its head and spins out of control, or logic, for that matter, and destroys all the good things Episode 1 had built.
Would have rated it 10 stars if it was only on the basis of the first episode.
Summary: If only they stopped at Episode 1...
Daybreak (2019)
Don't get the mid range rating, I think the show is great
It might be some people are intentionally trolling this TV show. I personally think it's great and I want to see season 2.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Last nail in the franchise?
I do hope it was the last nail, as it was hard and painful to watch. Produced by Tencent, which explains a lot. More of a nod to the fans, missing the Terminator, the Arnold, the "I'll be back" and the "Come with me if you want to live", than an actual movie. The quality is so poor that appearance of Arnold and Linda can be explained only by presence of cash-rich producing firm.
It's really really bad. A stillborn fanfic. Watch it only if you really miss the franchise and have absolutely nothing else to do.
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)
New genre is being born: Movies and Gaming combined.
Finally watched Bandersnatch. What a masterpiece, totally mind-blown. So very different from some other attempts at interactive movies (Final Destination 3). The development is not quite linear, but somewhat circular with bigger circles encompassing smaller ones, side-chain developments, etc.
Netflix might have just founded the new gold niche by combining two of the most popular entertainments in one: movies and gaming. I'm sure more will be coming.
The idea that we're just avatars in a virtual world played by someone else is not new of course, but Netflix execution is state of the art. Wonder what Elon Musk would say.
ps. Ppl watching it on weed or psilocybin have a good chance to get to the new paranoidal highs (pun intended) while watching it.
pps. Movie may be damaging to some individuals, so as the movie is watched (or should I say played?) worldwide, there may be cases of people jumping out of buildings and killing their relatives with ashtrays... Any reported cases so far?
Terms and Conditions May Apply (2013)
If use Facebook, Google, internet, or smart phone... Watch it!
I'll be brief. We're all being watched. Every second of our life. And I'm not exaggerating or being paranoid. That's just how it is. This documentary is really scary. And for a good reason. Because it is freaking scary.
Facebook and smart phones is the best invention NSA could hope for. Imagine that with just the right technology, anyone can tap into your phone and at any point of time they can see through your phone, they can hear through your phone, and even know what you're thinking at the moment. All their wet voyeuristic dreams come true.
So do yourself a favor, watch the movie, realize the truth, and join the forces to fight against mass surveillance.
The Expanse (2015)
Unbelievably good
Did I say good? No, it's not good. It's perfect.
This TV show is the rarest in it's genre. Absolutely epic. No other TV show ever made me almost live alongside the characters while being absorbed in an unimaginably believable storyline of our own future.
Geostorm (2017)
Geostorm should get an Ocsar as the Best of the Stupidest Catastrophic Movies
Geostorm should get an Ocsar as the Best of the Stupidest Catastrophic Movies.
Only in the United States of Hollywood would they create a Space Station to control the weather, with a function to create a thing called Geostorm which would deliberately destroy the Earth at a countdown. And only there would they program it to self-destruct after the said Geostorm is launched. Well, just in case,
PS. Really enjoyed the movie. But would have enjoyed it more if I were high, or better even, super high
War Machine (2017)
Wow, what a movie, an eye-opener really. Won't be an easy watch for hardline believers.
Just finished watching War Machine with Brad Pitt on Netflix. Wow, what a movie and an eye- opener. Really lets you put things into perspective and see the world through another person's eyes and ideas. Having watched it left me with an utmost respect for the protagonist Gen. Glen McMahon (portrayed after real life persona Gen. Stanley McChrystal). What a guy. Need to read his books now. Warning: Obama is portrayed quite controversially there, and not just implicitly. That trick with the meeting on Air Force One, wow what an asshole move, makes you question the integrity of the president you so long considered ideal. It is healthy to look at things through the eyes of people with views that may be different from yours. But it can be painful: if your point of view is unmovable, it can lead to frustration and disappointment. So a fair warning to those hardline viewers: it won't be an easy viewing if you can't consider other points of view or accept that what you believe may be different from reality.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
How NOT to colonize a planet
After watching Alien: Covenant I can't stop thinking that all these movies are based on one underlying condition: human stupidity. If it wasn't for the characters' doing their best to win the Darwin Awards, we wouldn't have any movies. Let me explain.
With the Universe being >14 billion years old, and the Earth ~ 4.5 billion years, any other planet which is as old as Earth with an atmosphere resembling that of the Earth, will inevitably have some sort of life form. And even if for some reason the evolution didn't create intelligent life (though I'm sure it would), there would be Life. Therefore, the whole idea of bringing in people to colonize this kind of planet is stupid in itself. Colonise my ass dumb-ass.
Then. Even if, for some reason, due to some really bad catastrophic events, some life form on this Planet had been annihilated, but the vegetation is booming and atmospherically everything gives you thumbs-up, then we already know who will probably inhabit this kind of planet. Guess who can survive most dramatic cataclysms? Micro-life, bacteria and viruses. Some of which, as we already know, can even survive in the outer space without any problems. Can you imagine, they don't even need spacesuits to survive? And we all know it because that's what Earth went through quite a few times.
Therefore, those "colonizers" who jump out of their spaceships without any proper reconnaissance are going to win the Darwin Awards by default. Why the *beep* don't you give the robots do their job, dumb-ass? Are you so unhappy that robots took away some of your jobs that you want to take away some of theirs too?
And what kind of instruction tells them to walk around this planet without wearing any sort of suits or protection! Oh, is the Earth-ish atmosphere good reason enough? Did they forget that it wasn't just the European colonizers who wiped out the Ingenious population of the American continent, but the microbes? And if walking around without protective suits is not killing you fast enough, just go poke your nose into everything you see, sniff those flowers, touch those unfamiliar objects with bare hands - because why the *beep* not...
Ghostbusters (2016)
This is simply put, hilarious
I simply cannot understand why anyone who remembers and loves the original Ghostbusters, wouldn't love this parody makeover movie.
The new Ghostbusters is an incredible fireworks of humour and action coupled with purely orgasmic allusions to the original. There's humour in every scene and in every dialogue, but it's better if you remember the sequence of events in the original movie - it makes it so much funnier. The new Ghostbusters contains absolutely fantastic cameos - I won't spoil it for you, but if you really love the original Ghostbusters, you will love it too.
I also enjoyed how they turned around the story of the Ghostbusters logo origins, the firefighters station, etc.
I'm not sure whether this movie can be considered a remake or a parody, because it's a perfect mix of the both.
H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S! Watch it, you won't regret it. I rarely write movie reviews, but this one is really worth it.
Child 44 (2015)
Very poor book adaptation
I sincerely doubt that the author of original Child 44 novel, Tom Rob Smith, had a chance to read the script for this movie, as this movie adaptation of the plot is just beyond the definition of bad.
Not only the movie has very little resemblance to the novel itself, it actually seems that the script writers have zero understanding of the Soviet history, upon which the events unravel.
All events in the movie are not coherent, the motivation of characters is the mystery, and the thriller part gets lost in a seriously dubious attempt to portray the ugliness of "the Soviet Russia". And what did they do to Tom Hardy, why every sentence he says sounds like he's seriously drunk. Is that supposed to mean "Russian accent"? So Russian language sounds like English, but after drinking half bottle of vodka?
This movie is just so very bad, it's not even worth a review. The movie which was supposed to be about the mystery, is a mystery in itself - the mystery of how some good actors, including Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman, agreed to be in it. However, just to warn others, I must warn ya: better read the book, it's really good and don't waste time watching this movie. It really has nothing to do with the book, apart from the name itself.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010)
Liam McIntyre is the epic fail of the casting group
Liam McIntyre is no Spartacus. Andy Whitfield (R.I.P.) turned out to be irreplaceable.
I wonder why Vengeance (Season 2) and Blood and Sand (Season 1) have a single rating. These two seasons are so different from each other that they deserve separate ratings. And the new season doesn't deserve anything above 5.
Dialogues are stupid and pompous, action doesn't move and what is presented as a leader of gladiators is nothing but a pretty face attached to a clumsy untrained body.
The true spirit of Spartacus was destroyed by an epic casting fail. And unfortunately neither Crixus nor Doctore can save it.
