The Black Dahlia (2006)
Trust me...stay at home (may contain spoilers)
OK, so there I was sitting there getting myself together to watch this movie that I was anticipating to see and then I get to the movie theater and once it comes on, I am still wondering "Am I in the right show?" The movie starts and it takes FOREVER to get to anything about E. Short. Finally when it starts to talk about her, "bam" it jumps to another character and talks about their life, then "bam" it jumps to about four more characters and talks about their life...then comes back to E. Short's story (which lasts about 2 min). I found myself laughing through the movie thinking "You have gots to be kidding me??!". My husband actually fell asleep and I was yawning but didn't leave cause I wanted to get my monies worth (ofcourse that didn't work out). At the very end, I was disappointed in all of the characters--really made people seem stupid back then. You are better off doing your own research on E. Short if you want to know more and just stay away from the movie because you will NOT get anything out of it. Waste of money!
Lady in the Water (2006)
I'd rather rent...
Lady in the water was interesting, however, it was one of those movies that you may want to just rent once it comes out. The previews make you think that it is some kind of thriller but it isn't anything like that. There I was sitting through another one of this director's movies, getting into it and then my eyes open wide and I am thinking "What the !@#$??!" The rest of the movie, I actually just sat there and laughed because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Nevertheless, it was entertaining and "different" but all of M.S'movies are. If you want to get a scare--don't get it but if you are just looking for something to watch because boredom has taken over or you want to take a step away from reality, then this may be your movie. I give M.S. an applause ONLY for doing something different.
Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. (1992)
Interesting
I, on the other hand, do not agree with what one of the user's write stating that this movie was "just awful". If you have never lived in that environment or been around people like that, then how could you understand the movie? It might have not been a Matrix type movie but it had it's meaning behind it. Here we have a girl who grew up in the projects, family on a tight income, and deals with the pressures of teenage life in New York City. For someone to just say that it was plain awful is insulting..maybe they need to see the movie again and actually take the time out to try and understand what this movie is trying to say to our young people.
A Different World (1987)
I'll never forget...
I love this series; I grew up on it. I actually wanted to go to Hillman College until I was told that it was just a made up college based on the great Morehouse and Spelman. I have to agree that I didn't like Season One hardly at all. Lisa Bonet may be a good actress, however, she didn't/couldn't bring out the best of ADW. Jasmine Guy is incredible; she brings that Whitley Gilbert character to life each time the camera rolls. ADW raised issues on school pressures, peer pressures, drugs, abuse, rape, and racial discrimination. To sit here and read that it was a tired attempt at humor just astonishes me. This was the first sitcom (African-American at that) that actually based actual facts on the college life. What people seem to forget is that when they were in college, it just wasn't all about studies (although it should have been.). Yet, they had fun and they had tears as well-don't "hate" A Different World just because you live in one...
