Spartak i Kalashnikov (2002)
Great film with a message.
This film recently showed at the Syracuse International Film Festival. I thought that it was well made and fast moving with a good score. The "homeless" children that act in the film are 1000 times better than the typical garbage that comes out of Hollywood. I was concerned for them from the start. Some great moments of action when two rival street gangs fight, the director shows us very little, making the action that more intense. The movie tilts towards the bizarre when the homeless boy befriends a general at a camp that trains "War Dogs". The visual comedy of this entire segment kept me laughing. The film ends with a statistic that mentions that there were over 2 million homeless kids in Russia in 2002. Look for this one.
The Body Snatcher (1945)
Dark visuals, Karloff incredible.
The few scenes of Lugosi and Karloff together were alone worth the viewing. Robert Wise must have had a great time lighting these two incredible faces. Years ago at a lecture Wise mentioned how sick Lugosi was and the special treatment that he needed to finish the film. The last two minutes of this film are truly eerie.
