Law & Order: 3 Dawg Night (2001)
IYKYK
As a fan of this franchise for decades, I had to come back to this episode 20+ years later.
Criminal Intent , SVU etc. I am exceptionally endeared to the production and interpretations offered by the creations of Dick Wolf.
Thespians, actors, storyline , plot and character development All of it!! The concept/trope/idea/conceptualization of "pulled straight from the headlines" certainly applies here , henceforth, my review title , IYKYK (if you know you know) . Kerry Washington and Idris Elba I think as young actors/ thespianship was a delight watching them develop their craft as often is the case when revisiting Law and Order, seeing actors strike out in the beginnings of their careers.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Heartfelt
I first saw the movie in 1993. My son had recently been diagnosed with Autism. What we now know as Autistism Spectrum Disorder. In 1993 he was 4 years old . DiCaprio's portrayal captivated me then and now. I use his depiction or portrayal of the character as a way of helping people to understand my son. He is 35 now . The entire cast was superb. The angst uncertainty love and caring by the actors to dig deep into their roles was amazing. They captured the essence of what each character internalized and presented it to the audience . Depp, Lewis and the mother ( Cates). Accessed The beauty pain sorrows of what is life and love.
Katt Williams: Woke Foke (2024)
Grand Guffaw
As for me ... "I didn't know what I needed until I needed it" lol!
I plan to go back watch again just to see what the critics are seeing. Maybe my excitement and anticipation "blinndsided" me. Katt's comedic timing, perspectives on social and cultural issues were all delivered with his unusual talent for thought provoking " ness". Of course we all meet "funniness" from where we are, and I was delighted . He was witty vivacious and intelligent. But then again I looooove to laugh gregariously!! At first I was going to mention my top 5 comedians/comediannes which turned into top 10 which turned into top 20 and Katt was in all of them lol!
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
True creatives...watch it for yourself
The spectacular cinematography, color, design and additions of new dimensions and realms were extremely exciting. Elements of humanity and courage were evident with family and cultures and promises of globalization to save us all. Ergo the script was well rounded and fully realized. Of course, I could just be swayed by the beauty of the movie. Comic relief moments were really funny . New characters were innovative , one of which I am absolutely in love with - hint - purpleish /blue hued character musically inclined. The end left me wanting more especially since it was an edge of your seat ending.
They Cloned Tyrone (2023)
I needed this movie ...NOW "raight" nah
The style of cinematography was reminiscent of the gritty avant - garde 70' movies, while arching into moments that are present and futuristic. I AM ABSOLUTELY LIVING FOR THIS SOUNDTRACK!!!!! This cinematic delight is definitely bringing attention to serious social constructs/ ideas/ theories while offering it up in a comedic bag. Comedy- Science Fiction is not easy to pull off. Of course the cast is worth the watch - Jaime, Teyonah, Grier, Keifer, J. Alphonse( lil murder) , and Boyega. Kudos to Frog!!! Action - Comedy - Mystery- Sci-Fi - Thriller - and Suspense. Kept me pensive and wondering Oh!! Lol and laughing.
House Party (2023)
I laughed I hollered I rolled
This has elements of the original , which I think are good...kid n play, Robin Harris was it Full Force? Tisha C, etc. I also embraced the merging of antiquities, old school , new and millennial, gen x, gen z . I like silly "Stoopid" schtick comedy. In this movie House Party 2023 I loved the OG cameos and the homage to old school r and b classics. For the most part it was "stoopid funny". In fact the fake kaola with Mya took me out!!! Kid Cudi , DC Young fly Rotimi had me loud cackling. Tosin Cole "merlot" lol!!
I am grateful for the comic relief this movie offers , sometimes you just need something that is easy to process. It's a party....okay let me say again I love the cameos . I would say that the writers/ producers tried to please both /all audiences..... As a person that has viewed both movies, I liked it . I think this was a nod to the original ...
Power Book II: Ghost (2020)
Akin to the THREE TENORS!!! BRAVO!!
For me I delight in the crime drama series. The plot twists , gangsta mafioso style crime family pace is exhilarating. I revel in the performances presented by the actors that embody bthe characters of CANE, DAVIS, and TATE. Kudos to Woody McClain, Method Man and Larenz Tate. There is always an uptick in the storyline when they enter the scene. The series keeps the original intrigue alive and excitement comparable to the other spin off series and the original, of course we shall always miss OMARI'S GHOST , but the final scene gave me Ghost Tommy vibes !! Go Braden!! The season three finale was thrilling !!! Salut to power universe ...btw the three tenors are L. Pavarotti , P Domingo and J. Carreras.
Evan Almighty (2007)
Truly A Feel Good Movie
Okay. First I love the take on the Noah's Ark . Like a revamping of stories from The Children's Bible whether you are a believer or not. Okay. ANIMALS ??!! I'm in!! Steve! Wanda! Morgan!! Molly! Jonah! John G!! Yes I'm also a fan of Bruce Almighty but I'm glad this one is in the same vain but different and pleasurable to watch as well. In some scenes it reminded me of my whimsical childhood. In others it gave or reminded me of the accountability of human beings one to another. Sorry this review isn't as knowledgeable intellectual as others, but sometimes you go to the cinema to laugh , be awestruck , fun.
Poker Face (2023)
Three in a row
I was totally in by episode one. Dark comedy , suspense , thriller, crime drama , and mystery that engages with unexpected twists. I'm not so sure about the Columbo references , even though I agree that that familiarity/similarity is there, but for a quick minute I did feel a Matlock"ness". Even Clue or Hercule Poirot. Doesn't matter I love the show!! Episode 5 ( Judith light/ S Epatha Merkerson) and episode 6 (Ellen Barkin) really got me going in for this series. The cast of different characters, actors and sets/places keeps me wanting more.
Natasha is 3 for 3 for me. Orange is the New Black / Russian Doll/ Poker Face.
Swarm (2023)
Yeah....dark zany off putting
Hope I'm getting this right. I love this Gen Zish serial killer... dark comedic serial killer vibes. As a fan of the show Barry and American Horror Story I loved this twist of a Black female Swarm- hive killer. As they used to say back in the day...Fresh!! Lol!!
The episode Honey is the one that got me. Although. I do like how it builds up with the backstory in the episode Stung . It dapples on that line between reality and fiction , while jumping on and off the thin lines between sanity, lunacy and mental disorders like psychopathy, sociopathy and schizophrenia. So as to not include spoilers, I'll just say that the reality vs fiction was the most intriguing part for me , resemblings of high profile cases... applause DG!!
Prey (2022)
Serendipitously galvanic
This was more exciting than I expected . As for me (yes, I was an absolutely fan of the original and what it meant for creators in cinematography) . I was not disappointed ...I'm gonna watch it again.
Dopesick (2021)
Captivating
You just never know. I was totally engaged by the middle of the first episode. I was heartbroken by the journey of Dr. Finnix(M. Keaton). The whole cast ,editing and writing of this series is excellent. Absolutely thought provoking and cerebral.
Them (2021)
Takes true life stories to the next level
I truly commend the series for it's perspective and viewpoint. It made me go back to a documentary on Levittown PA. I saw years ago . Although some may view the horrors of the series equavicable to cinematic display,
the true horror remains that the the factual and real life horrors of preemptive multiculturalism were that terrifying and much more. Dark.
Oh, but on the lighter side... the soundtrack is fire!!!
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Beyond the Beyond!
I was totally immersed in this quintessence of cinema. I was captivated . I am tempted to give it a 10, but I'm a die hard Godfather,Shawshank,Training Day ...crime drama. But after more consideration I just might. This movie kept me engaged with the director's perspective back to back 4 times in a row!
Sunshine Hotel (2001)
There but for the grace...go I
At first the depiction saddened me, but then I was intrigued and awed by the level of endurance and perseverance on the part of the inhabitants ,which left me mesmirized. Truly...the brain/ mind is complex yet
fragile . Also, it seems a broken heart can manifest it self physically/ neurologically and psychologically.
Cut Throat City (2020)
Just for ME
I gave a higher end rating because of the potential the movie had with the casting. Oh!! And was excited about RZA directing . I remember how I !oved his choices for Kill Bill as far as the soundtrack. I actually LOVED all the cameos! Especially - if you caught it - the Jodeci comment. Or maybe I just liked the commradery that this projects suggests.
Madame (2017)
Dvorak !!
I am enchanted by this movie. But then again I am an effervescent hopeless romantic.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
10 for other reasons
Although I gave the movie an 8 , I really want to give it a 10 for the obvious reasons....Chadwick Boseman posthumously, for its conversion of a Yale Repertory Theatre play/Broadway (Cort Theatre) play to the screen , its historical value and for the movie handling the paradoxes of money, status, race records, race and gender during this period as it relates to artistry \music womens rights and civil rights copyright, ownership, "music masters" (both kind) and the like.
Next Day Air (2009)
Stoopid funny ..."not so amart" thugs always make me laugh
Admittedly comedies are difficult to do. Timing inflection presentation..but I love a zany story/plotline ie.clue/death at a funeral/tropic thunder/hangover etc. This movie had what I like easy fun "stoooopidness" lol
Great Performances: Nas Live From the Kennedy Center: Classical Hip-Hop (2018)
I live for THIS!!
As a classically trained musician (Opera - mezzo soprano) and as an enthusiast of the culture ( hip hop /rap/ jazz/blues) I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this respectful and spectacular presentation of Nas performing at The Kennedey Center. BRAVO!!!! Kennedy Center, Nasir Jones
- Paula Jones Bowen
Cats (2019)
The review captions had me dying laughing... i'm weak
Okay okay .... I loved Jennifer Hudson and Dame Judi
XXOOXXOXOX
Hope & Fury: MLK, the Movement and the Media (2018)
Prolific profound
Viewing this with a pure historical / documentary perspectiveve was difficult. As I connected with the timeline of events I could not help but become emotionally involved. The content was informative and the images were heartbreaking.
I used to be an Idealist ...but as I view more documentaries concerning the poor.disenfranchised, underrepresented, gender equality, race,classism.....I just ponder the ultimate questions.
Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (2016)
Awestruck
This portrayal of Lady Day was absolutely wonderful I was emersed with sentiment. Reminds me how I felt when I saw "Lady sings the Blues" for the first time. Loved it!
Two Weeks (2006)
Touching and realistic
If you have ever had to become a caretaker for a loved one, you will appreciate the realism of the complex characters portrayed here.
Us (2019)
Stop It Jordan !!
All I can say is that the fragility of the psyche is exposed here, or well at least mine. Loved it!
