A Porta ao Lado (2023)
Slow and boring
The actresses, Letícia Colin and Barbara Paz, are the only good things about this movie. The rest is a total waste of time and money!
The movie revolves around the two couples, betrayals and the danger of boredom in long-term (?) relationships.
It does not evolve from there. It does not go anywhere. Sex scenes, wild parties and shallow dialogues.
Nothing is left to think about when the movie ends. No wonder Brazilian movies don't get watched inside the country and/or around the world.
The script is loose and the ending is an evidence that the director didn't have a clue. I try and try but Brazilian movies keep disappointing me.
The Banishing (2020)
Don't waste your time!!!!
Full of clichés. Really bad script and very, very disappointing ending. The actors/actresses are good but that's it. I regret having rented it. It was a big waste of my time and money! If you are a fan of horror movies, like me, you will feel cheated.
Encantado (2018)
Lacks the 'whole' picture
I am yet to watch a documentary about the latest political events in Brazil that provides a balanced perspective on what happened. The director has chosen to 'slice' the reality in a way that matches his own political views. i.e. He simply ignores what does not supports his own beliefs. It is a documentary that represents well the extreme (both right and left) and unbalanced attitudes currently devastating Brazil. The format is not innovative and the slow/melancholic voice-over has already been seen in a similarly unbalanced documentary (The Edge of Democracy).
In the Tall Grass (2019)
Don't waste your time!
Bad script. Nonsense. I wish that Netflix started to produce some good horror movies.
Coisa Mais Linda (2019)
Good art direction, bad script
Unbelievable characters. Shallow interpersonal dynamics. Good to see Rio in the old times though.
Aterrados (2017)
Amazing movie!
Horror movie fans will enjoy this movie. An intelligent script, professionally produced, performed and directed. Well done Argentina!
Extortion (2017)
Predictable and biased
It is sad to see how the North American movie & TV industries keep producing stories that just reinforce cultural biases. In this movie, once again, the (white) North Americans are the 'goodies' and the African/Latino/Caribbean characters are the 'baddies'. Apart from the horrible stuff perpetrated by the real 'baddies', all locals (the less bad ones) would do anything for a bribe and are depicted as lazy and incompetent. It is sad to see an actor nominated to an Oscar (Barkhad Abdi) accepting a role like the one he plays here. But, given the environment where he works, I guess he might not have that many other options. Completely dispensable movie. A big waste of time and money.
Querido Embaixador (2017)
It's so bad, it's embarrassing!
Think about a bad movie: this is it! Although the plot is interesting, the script is bad and dialogues are poor. Most actors (including the main character) are not convincing and the direction is amateurish. A good story badly told.
