Niagara, Niagara (1997)
Marcy and Seth's Search for the Black Bobbi Head
An excellent film with sublime acting. I never liked Robin Tunney until I saw this film - I became an instant fan. Tunney and Henry Thomas have perfect chemistry together. I wish I could see them in a romantic comedy with Fairuza Balk (the best witch). Henry is a muffin and a fine actor (the only interesting thing in Gangs of New York). Michael Parks is great and the soundtrack is amazing. A truly tragic love story. My favorite film and one of my favorite soundtracks.
Crash (1996)
Benevolent Psychopathology
This is one of the most fascinating and interesting films I have seen - definitely one of my favorites. The film does have a story - people who are so disconnected from the world and each other that they need to find one thing they can all share together - sex and the car crash. The characters aren't sick or weird - they are just trying to feel something rather than a hollow emptiness. The center of the film is the love story between James and Catherine, a married couple who are desperate to reclaim their passion for one another. The final scene with them at the end is truly beautiful and cries out with their heart-aching despair. The cast is sublime as is the film. The novel is worth reading. ***Do not rent at Blockbuster - the film is ten minutes shorter. "Prophecy is ragged and dirty." - Vaughan
