Recep Ivedik (2008)
Toilet humor nothing more..
Some films are so bad that they are actually good. And occasionally we feel affection for them because if nothing else, they invoke feelings of nostalgia when imagination and creativity were almost commonplace and the bottom line. However do not be fooled into thinking that because you found old Kemal Sunal, Sener Sen or Zeki-Metin movies or other well-written Turkish comedies funny, you'll respond similarly to this Recep Ivedik.
Sahan Gokbakar is not a very "funny" guy. At least for me.. He tries so hard to be funny, it is impossible not to be annoyed by him. I can maybe watch some 5 minutes of him and that would be it. This is 90 minutes and that was harsh.
If you don't count the continuous swearing and its unbearable annoyance, there is supposed to be a joke hiding somewhere in this film but obviously I blinked at the wrong time. If you have the sense of humor of an emotionally retarded orangutan you might just enjoy it but be sure not to blink..
If you are into Turkish humor or want to see a Turkish movie, please pass this. Try some old Sener Sen movies... Otherwise get ready to see some solid toilet humor without any endowment.
Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
Not everyone's cup of coffee!
If you're looking for mindless action, THIS is the movie for you. It's over the top, totally unbelievable, physically impossible, but marvelous all at the same time.
It is the perfect film to watch with a few friends, some takeaway food and a load of beers. The story is easy to follow, totally ridiculous but just about does enough to string the shoot outs together. I can't really praise this for film for doing so perfectly what it sets out to do. It is a tongue in cheek action film with some very funny black comedy in it and this is executed brilliantly. Paul Giamatti is superb as the psycho villain as is Clive Owen as the hero.
If you can forget that this movie professes to have a plot, you're in for a rollicking good time. A must-see if you're looking for mindless adult entertainment, and don't mind looking at Clive Owen. It is just non-stop violence and shooting and cool one liners.
Perfect!
