Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017)
An important message about consent
Despite some missteps in acting and a messy timeline, it is a lovely story about love, relationships, boundaries, and how our surroundings can pressure us to present a façade. A red thread through the movie is repeated consent from the main characters, which is wonderful to see on screen.
A Discovery of Witches: Episode #1.8 (2018)
Very exciting
Direct quotes from my first watching of this episode, in order: "Oh, no", "Oh, wow", "Oh, boy", "Oh, cool", "Oh, no!", "Well, fudge".
The episode is very exciting, and I was kept in suspense for a large portion of the time. But for final episode of a season I had expected something... different. The best way I can explain it is that I would have been happy if this ending had been the ending of the first episode of next season.
The only reason I give this episode such a high score despite it having a bad cliffhanger ending, is that I already know there will be a season 2 and that I have the books to entertain me until then.
A Discovery of Witches: Episode #1.7 (2018)
Fast forward
A lot of the storylines on expectations culminate in this episode, and many exiting happens at once. 10/10 because the threads of the season are woven together quite nicely.
We are given numerous hints about where the story will go after this season, and I'm all for it.
A Discovery of Witches: Episode #1.6 (2018)
A lot to unpack
There's a lot to unpack in this episode. The torture absolutely looks painful, but also brings up a lot of questions of exactly how powerful Diana is.
Dianas meeting with her parents and her mother's story also brings up questions about what's to come. The showrunners managed to use the trope of dead parents appearing to their child without becoming juvenile or religious.
A Discovery of Witches: Episode #1.5 (2018)
Impressive acting
I thoroughly enjoy the parallel hunting scenes, it builds such a suspense. I also enjoy the way the showrunners portray Diana as an actual adult woman and not a teenager as in so many other vampire stories; she's making actual informed choices rather than just following passions.
I have replayed the reunion scene three times.
Ans an extra tip of the hat for the way Matthew Goode manages to totally shift his facial expressions between serenity, predatory aggression, and joy.
A Discovery of Witches: Episode #1.4 (2018)
Strong episode, strong emotions
The scenes in this episode are filmed beautifully. It also gives a better insight into the politics of the Congregation, and how the characters we've previously been introduced to relate to each other. Also shows the development of feelings between the main characters at just the right pace.
Though, you understand that there's more going on under the surface that is probably explained in the book.
A Discovery of Witches: Episode #1.3 (2018)
As action packed as a series about a romance between academics can be
Great development of characters, even though I sorely wish there was a wiki explaining certain terminology.
A Discovery of Witches: Episode #1.2 (2018)
Strong second episode
Somewhat messier than the first episode when it comes to number of characters and storylines. Makes me want to read the book to catch up on hints I might not understand.
A Discovery of Witches: Episode #1.1 (2018)
Immersive
I enjoy when the first episode does not drown you in explanations, but rather lets you imagine the world yourself. The chemistry between actors is spot-on, and I absolutely want to watch the next episode immediately.
