Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea (2021)
Well made movie in Malayalam
From the first scene the movie caught us. If you are splitting hairs and nit picking you could say that there is a bit of a lag in the second half but we didn't feel it was even worth mentioning. There is a scene in Bahubali where Prabhas is climbing a waterfall and cliff. In this scene you can see the stretching of the CGI capability in India. However, I was really impressed with the visual effects of the movie. It was at par with well taken world movie. That in itself is a feather in the cap of the crew. History will deem this movie great like Kalapani which was not a success in theatres. However, I have no doubt after the initial negative reviews from opposing fans and fans who got succumbed to masses expectations the movies review will pick up from the silent majority of the malayalam film audience.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Messed up script and direction pulls down a potential good story to B grade movie.
Messed up script nd direction pulls down a potential good story to B grade movie.
Not to mention the burdensome bgm and emotional scenes.
Cold Case (2021)
Same old gimmicks in horror. No wow factor. Unnecessary BGM hype.
One time watch. There won't be repeat audience for this movie, which is necessary these days for success of films in any platform.
Same old gimmicks in horror. No wow factor. Unnecessary BGM hypes.
The lead actor has one single facial expression majority of the movie. That is an achievement in itself to keep it so stoic without much reactions.
From the beginning felt like the BGM plays an intrusive part to create a hype in places not needed. An intelligent viewer will pick this up after couple of scenes.
Usual jump scares . Boring at times with usual horror gimmicks.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Neither funny nor serious.
The movie is full of faults, director incompetence and more.
Started good then it was slow, unncessary convos. Script and dialogues are so soo crappy as well.
Action scenes are not worth mentioning as it never thrills.
When there is an intense scene the supporting actors stand as if they have no clue what to do and and also there are no roles for supporting actors in scenes . Also where the freak is Geeta? What a dumb movie!
Joji (2021)
You do not feel like there is a director to this movie. Somehow, the director craft, cinematography craft, editing craft don't stand in the way of the story being told.
You do not feel like there is a director to this movie. Somehow, the director craft, cinematography craft, editing craft don't stand in the way of the story. We dont even feel like it is being told to us rather we feel as if we are there. This is the brilliance of this film.
The depth and the nuances of each character enriches the film. Even characters who have been in on one or two scenes have some how been given a depth and we feel their emotion when they emote. The character Gireesh for e.g. When he stands up to Joji in the family scene we are with Gireesh and his emotion is the audience's emotion.
We only see Joji in Fahads acting. Such a great performance by him. All actors have done an outstanding job.
Great dilm.
Irul (2021)
Soubin out of his depth or rather could have been guided differently.
Soubin out of his depth or rather should have been guided differently by the director.
Fahad his whole self as usual but without depth of character in the story. Actually except for the caracter Archana there is no depth in any other characters to make the audience believe the ride.
The lady acted well.
Ava (2020)
Nonchalant script and dialogues among many other problems.
Nonchalant script and dialogues. Chastain looks totally out of place in action sequences, even in jogging scenes. Stunt choreography at times too lose that you can see the fakeness.
Halal Love Story (2020)
A possible master piece, that did not reach its potential. An above average outing.
Here is the beef I have with this film. There is an element of artificiality in the film that unfortunately layers on top of the subtlety the makers tried to bring. This is not evident throughout the film but the artificiality creeps its head up here and there and it was distracting for me. At times it felt a bit preachy, indirectly though, trying to convey an agenda that is not very evident.
For e.g.
Suhra played by Grace Antony's reaction at times felt a bit over the top to elicit a funny reaction especially in the initial chemistry between Suhra's husband and her. It feels not as flowing as how her performance has been in Kumbalangi Nights were she was brilliant.
Haseena played by Parvathy Thiruvothu looked at times out of place as a coach and mentor. In recent films especially, in Virus and this, you feel the actor is somehow conscious of the camera in the room. We have seen Parvathy's acting prowess and naturality in her early acting career which seems to be MIA.
There is a Soundman in the film, played by Soubin, who helps the film makers within the story direct the short film; his gimmicks were funny but left the viewers wondering why he quit the project early and gave us the feeling that he was forcefully brought in for certain humour creation. When the audience feels this element while watching the film it translates into a forced artificiality of the story.
Towards the end several dialogues and scenes felt like an attempt to preach to the audience that the characters' idiosyncratic religious believes are a real aspect of human life and should be accepted by all. That preachiness, came across in the film which I thought was a bit distracting.
These are just 4 examples. There are some more spread across the film.
The plus of this film is obviously the story which is so different, the acting by most characters, the subtle humorous situations all helped create a feel good film.
Overall, this is an above average film and some audience would want to see it more than once which is a definite plus.
