Titli (2014)
I want to see more movies of this director
Overall, I liked the movie a lot. I enjoyed that the main character wasn't a good guy, although I felt like the director of the movie got scared of his own thoughts or were trying to accommodate a viewer's feelings and I didn't like it, as if you add some painkillers before breaking someone's arm to hurt a person. (which is a great idea for some, as well as very underwhelming for others)
The story is a mixture of traditional delusional dreams of Hollywood and some harsh reality of Indian suburbs (but light). As a result, there were lots of moments in the movie, where I felt "I don't believe you" or something I felt saying "explore this idea with me".
Titli's identity yet was too underdeveloped to my taste, but the main conflict of breaking out the reality, where you don't belong, yet inability to create your own is an outstanding idea, for which I can accept all other flaws. (I enjoyed the moment when he is changing his T-shirt to a shirt of his brother, accepting the rules of the world and buying into this)
There are lots of (to my feelings unintentionally) unanswered questions: does Titli has anger issues the same way as his brother or he doesn't and he just using it as an excuse to be violent
would he repeat the path of his brother
(also was the director too shy to show a rape in the movie?)
I didn't like the ending either. In the movie, the moment Titli is asking forgiveness his mistakes, he gets it, but it feels too delusional for such kind of a movie (like a painkiller against all the pain in life)
Overall, I had a great experience. I wish the director does more of his great work. There are lots of layers in the movie and it is amazing to explore them, but the name of this movie should be not "Titli", but "Titli light on painkillers".
