Army of the Dead (2021)
I understand the hate but...
Reading through all the bad reviews on here and I won't lie, almost all the comments and points made are valid. That being said, I watched the movie without knowing anything about it, and despite rolling my eyes a few times at the obvious plot holes, I still had fun watching. The mashing of the zombie and heist genres was fun, the action and gore was turned up to eleven. Good watch if you're in the mood for some mindless entertainment.
There Are Monsters (2013)
Started strong then took a nose dive
A simple but creepy concept had me intrigued by this movie as soon as I saw the trailer. It had a lot of potential but I couldn't help but to be taken out of the movie by the way it was shot.
They chose to make a 'found footage' or documentary style movie, which can be great if they are done right. However the super consistent use of blurry, shaky, close up shots flying all over the screen made it pretty difficult to watch.
Also, if everything is meant to be shot by these student filmmaker characters, keep it that way throughout the entire film. So many times a character would go off on their own or we could clearly see the characters weren't filming anymore, yet we saw everything through the same style of close up, shaky, multiple camera footage as if they were still shooting. It just annoyed me and I grew bored watching. If you want to see a really good found footage film, watch Cloverfield.
Hostile (2017)
Swing and a miss
I love a good post apocalyptic thriller so I was looking forward to this one. It starts really well, and then quickly becomes odd, then frustrating, then just plain eye-roll worthy.
The entire movie jumps back and forward between timelines but does so in a way that feels very jarring. The entire relationship between the two leads felt unrealistic... so many plot points and character decisions just became too much of a stretch for me. I can suspend my disbelief to a certain point but c'mon guys...
I really wanted to like it, it was shot beautifully, the creatures were genuinely creepy, and it had potential.
Points for originality, I definitely wasn't expecting what I saw (though I did call the 'twist' about 20 minutes before it happened). The message that the writer tries to leave us with is a nice one but feels out of place in this genre and left me with too many questions.
Cabin 28 (2017)
I never listen to reviews but...
I should have with this film. I'm a big horror fan. I'll give anything a chance and try to find a redeeming quality. But this is just bad. It's so bad you guys. It almost comes off as a parody, except parodies are funny. Absolutely no connection to the characters, the acting is honestly the worst I've seen (especially the mother), the tired horror cliches, the awful ticking 'suspense' score... Do you brain and eyes a favour and watch something else.
Sisters (2015)
People need to chill the F out
Why so many haters?? Tina and Amy are freaking HILARIOUS and they didn't let me down in this movie. Yes it's crude, vulgar, full of explicit language, and it made me laugh hysterically multiple times. It's a fairly simple premise, with throwbacks to the gross-out teen party flicks of the 80s and 90s - only this time it's a bunch of middle aged adults going wild, trying to push aside the stress and monotony of being responsible grown-ups and reclaiming their glory days when they 'partied like they were never gonna die'. Underneath it all are themes revolving around the unbreakable bond between sisters and family, growing up and letting go of your past.
Fantastic supporting cast, extremely amusing jokes, one liners and physical comedy. All the people freaking out and hating on this movie need to relax, it's a popcorn comedy flick. Enjoy it for what it is.
