I liked the original Superman films and I thought that no one could replace Christopher Reeves (although to be honest, I didn't think he truly portrayed the Superman of the comic books).
And having seen many previous comic book heroes butchered on screen, Daredevil, Catwoman etc, I thought that this film would continue the trend of destroying yet another comic book hero during the transition to film.
Well here is a film which captures the dignity which I thought a Superman would have.
Brandon Routh is one of the most convincing comic heroes to date and he portrayed Superman as both super and as a man.
Kevin spacey was almost convincing as Lex Luthor but I would have liked his character to have been a bit more serious and less comic, but he was sufficiently evil to be an almost worthy adversary for Superman.
My only criticism is that the story line was a little underdeveloped and should have contained a lot more action.
Whilst the comic book always gave us the idea that Superman and Lois Lane were almost meant to be, I think most of the film (as have it's predecessors) dwells too much on the love interest and not enough on Superman as an action hero.
I for one would like to see more of Brandon Routh in action as Superman and I would like to see him battle some truly evil characters in future, because that's what Superman did for most of the comic book stories (he fought baddies).
I hope the next Superman film starring Brandon Routh shows us the true Superman because I think Brandon has come the closest to becoming the Superman of the comic books.
Definitely worth a watch in my view and I hope it's a promise of better things to come.
