Midsommar (2019)
so so horror
Trite story good camerawork and a decent cast. Left me feeling I'd rather have watched something else. Try the Wicker Man if you want to see a decent film in this vein!
Homecoming (2009)
sorry misery ripoff
I tried so hard to like this film because it was on netflix and they don't get very good movies on there. The plot was obviously derivative which I can forgive because most modern films usually are. The acting was of a reasonably good standard for a low budget film but the dialog was abysmal and the plot followed such a standard trajectory that each scene became more obvious than the last. Where I gave up was in the bathroom scene, A woman who you know is going to try to kill you, and you just give her a knock on the head. Love B movies and indie flicks but this was poor! I know when I think a film is bad when I give it the 5 minute test i.e. I will give it another 5 minutes then it's off. It lasted 50 minutes but only just!
Sound of My Voice (2011)
misguided attempt
The acting was excellent and the script half way decent but the story was stupid in the extreme. Two quite intelligent people, who don't seem to be struggling financially, would put themselves to those extremes in the hope of catching a good story! No way after the first meeting those two in real life would never have gone back there. The attempt to back up their decisions by some feeble family back story was derisory to say the least and ruined what was a reasonably decent film by then! I understand why the film makers are saying people do get caught up in these cults but it just didn't ring true in this film. For me a non starter because the journalists, unlike the others who were there to believe, were cynics to start with and I could not believe their willingness to accept it.
Another Earth (2011)
good film for cube fans.
OK so it started so promisingly with the sharp impact of the car crash then seemed to veer into hand held territory on a budget....what kept my attention was the great storyline and the terrific performances....and then the film ,as if knowing its potential, rose to great heights....the premise isn't unfamiliar but it is done in a fresh enough way to make it seem so....the realistic approach to Rhoda's first meeting with the father and subsequent developments were also superbly portrayed....the only clunkers to me were the blind cleaner who was too philosophical and the brother who I didn't believe as a character.... the ending was superb no spoilers....a very enjoyable film :}
