Argo (2012)
I nearly cried at the end, true story!
Thumbs up for Ben Affleck. He did a great job making a political story to a film in a very fair way. I respect that. And as an Iranian I believe that this is not a political game at this time, but a movie that can entertain you.
As an Iranian who is not a big fan of his country specially at 80s, but a big fan of cinema, I see this film is pure art and nothing else matters. You are watching it, not thinking about why or how this is, which means script has a lot to discuss, but instead, you think about people in it, characters, about Tony's son, about the house keeper, about the mad man at bazaar and yet, this is it! The film got you in! Why would I destroy such an entertaining moment watching this by an unfair political and nationalistic look? And why is this film entertaining? Because of Mr. Affleck's solid way of direction. That not only helps you to believe the story and people in it, but helps you involve and think about it and worry about upshot as well.
Not so long ago a revolution had happened in Iran and then, some bad mistakes happened too. I know that most of the people in Iran in 1979 and 80s were strangely violent and this film is all about a mistake that I can't ignore it as a human being, but I can't ignore the US government's involvement at Shaah's crimes at the moment. So, what I wanted from this picture, was a fair perspective of what happened and that is exactly what I got! Film is not trying to tell you that all Iranian People were bad and Iran is Devil! Also is not trying to tell you that USA is saint. See?
I can tell you that some important issues ... forget it! I almost cried at the end and nothing else matters, so ... I give it a 9 out of 10 for being entertaining, thrilling and fair enough to be one of my favorites as a boy born and raised in Iran!
Argo... go **** yourself!
Sunshine Cleaning (2008)
I can only recommend it to you, if you are a huge fan of Amy Adams or Emily Blunt.
Honestly, I saw this one just because Amy Adams and now, I can swear she was good as always. The others too. All of them acted good and controlled. But believe me, a real film, needs something more than acting and directing. A real film have to have a good message. A real life in it and a purpose.
When you see this movie through the window of your own life, you could probably say I am blessed, I am happy, or maybe on the other side, I am sad, I am poor and I am a looser! You know this film wants you to make your life better. The story, shows you the efforts that someone, in a very honorable way does to make her life better. Then, at the moment, you have the strength to do something like that. You may even make a decision right then. But, in the film, we see everything so screwed out and all the efforts ends bad. Actually, plot is trying to tell you that anybody in the world can make its life better, until sometime it is good. But at some point, everything is screwed, film took its message back and it's really bad. Then again, until the ending, you think "Why should I make an effort when everything is against me?" and like you know life is empty, you have the strength for getting yourself killed! Suicide! The worst thing ever! The fact that I hate so much. What is that film? Is it worked out whit its message or at some point gets totally against itself and encourages you to do the by-yourself-stuff? I'm sorry but I can't call such film a "good" or "wort watching" one, even though I'm a huge fan of Amy Adams.
When you see it through the window of characters lives, this time it sucks! You can't imagine how unbelievable is this film. I mean, Rose is sleeping with the police guy, and have a bastard boy, and her mother had committed suicide and now she wants a honorable and valid way of life? Isn't it a big contrast? Yes it is. How can I believe such a antithetic character? And when you think about it, you can not go through story and this time it doesn't work out for you.
By the way, there is some particular scenes that you can not understand. What is advantage of boys radio talking scene? What is the advantage of shrimp selling dad scene? What is the advantage of Winston? What is the advantage of dead mother? OH ... I know this one! "You just put your audience in a bad mood to think about that death and awaits him for a while for a conclusion!" But it doesn't work out as well.
I cant offer this film, it is not a black comedy, not a melodrama or something like that. It's a game of scenes that sometime make you laugh, sometime make you think, and sometime make you cry ... but all these are faked and at the end, you don't know why? I can only recommend it to you, if you are a huge fan of Amy Adams or Emily Blunt.
Inja bedoone man (2011)
Here Without Me is one of the best titles among Persian films
At this time I just watched the title twice. Never write a review of a movie, but this one is different, I feel like I want to write my thoughts. Film begins with Ehsan in a bus heading to south in order to leave the country. And serious financial problems and lack of chances for advancement for the young is the cause. A young talented man wants to be a screenplay writer, but he can't and he believes he must get rid of this country and his poor family. Problem is, he really loves his mother and sister. The ones he can't ignore and wants them better fate. When he realizes that his sister had fallen in love with one of his friends, the other side of story began. No one can tell you the story better than the movie itself. No one can tell you the smallest details better than the movie itself. And nothing is better than storytelling of the movie. This movie, involves you. In fact, you believe every thing in the film's atmosphere, one by one, at every moment. Way of directing is awesome. Director wants you to go and sit alongside characters in their house. On the sofa! He just did his job well. It's my favorite moment. Back in the bus, he is going to leave the country for real, and he says: "I can't recognize what is real and what is not. Things happened with no regularity. I'm going to leave that home and I wont come back ever. This is gonna lead me see the real." Then we follow the story to the end. You think the film is honest with you and there is just one story line. But you are wrong. You are not a good audience! The film will tell you two separate stories. One is gonna end happy. One is .... you go and watch. But the way you see things, is brilliant! The ending is best in the history of Iranian cinema. The conclusion of this drama is better than better than better. One more thing! The acting is just real. That's all. Except Mother's roll that is a little bold and exaggerated. Motamed Aria is a good actress but not good enough in comparison with Saber Abar and Negar Javaherian. Motamed Aria won the award of an American festival, but the fact is something else. Believe me, she is away from an Iranian mother who cares a lot about her children. Ehsan is real, Yalda is real, but she is not. Everything else is OK. Locations, camera, decoration, sound, music, editing and every thing is just OK. That does make sense, doesn't it? The last scene of the movie is so important. The way you can recognize what was true, and what wasn't. When everything is right in a movie, you can call it masterpiece. But something isn't right in this one. So I think 9 out of 10 is very best score. That thing isn't right in a dialogue. At one moment, mother and Ehsan sitting together. The point is, mother's feelings. She stands at the end of the line. She had a fight and ejected from her work. She ask her son a cigarette. She hate cigarettes! But she does not know what to do any more. Then she asks: "Was you serious about suicide?" He responds: "No I wasn't!" THIS: "NO I WASN'T" can destroy whole story. But the last scene save it! You wont miss this one. YOU WONT. Well done Bahram Tavakoli. Really good job. Thank you for sustaining my bad English.
