Halt and Catch Fire: Giant (2014)
Enjoyable but a few inconsistencies
I enjoyed this episode and thought it was among the strongest so far (I just started binge watching the series), but there were a few things that I thought were inconsistent with the times:
In 1983, homosexuality was still quite taboo. I don't think the characters would have treated it as so "matter of fact" like is done today. I even doubt that Bosworth would have punched out that idiot in the strip bar; he would most likely have just let it pass, lest anyone would think he thought it defensible.
Also, apart from Isaac Hayes, how many black men had shaved heads and a goatee in 1983?
Bowie: The Man Who Changed the World (2016)
Not impressed
I've been a big Bowie fan for more than 40 years and have seen him live 5 times. He has been the biggest influence on my musical tastes. I consider his work with Eno in the late 70's to be some of the most ground breaking music of the rock and roll era.
That said, I found this documentary wanting. While I enjoyed learning the details of his career, I didn't enjoying the nonlinear approach. The producers skipped around too often. At one point, they would be talking about Ziggy Stardust and then they would skip to Station to Station. Yes, his career is more than just his album output (acting, producing, etc.), but to me, his career was defined by his albums. The narrative was hard to follow at times.
And perhaps the biggest fault of all, none of his music was featured.
