Luv (2012)
Okay Movie
Had this film in my watchlist for over a year. Just watched it, and it did not capture me the way I expected it to.
I loved the fact that it showcases many actors from "The Wire" and other Baltimore natives.
For me, too much of the movie was predictable. It continually gave me the sense of familiarity with other films of it's nature.
With that said, the base storyline was well laid. The dramatic scenes, actors, and sets were really good. I was pleasantly surprised with the all-star cast containg Common, Charles S. Dutton, Danny Glover and Michael K. Williams. When each appear in the film, may expectations grew with anticipation.
I'm the end, I rate movies according to my willingness to rewatch. Although it was a good movie, I don't have the feeling to rewatch.
American Skin (2019)
Unspeakably Powerful
Watching this film with the real world lense of a Black man, though fictional, American Skin captures the conflict between law enforcement and African American citizens as well as the conflict between the realities/narratives of the different races of this country.
I would love for this film to serve as a launching pad for dialogue on race relations, specifically on the different perspectives each racial group views society. Prayerfully, with open minds, setting racial biases aside, coming from a place of humanity, this country could be better.
BET knocked this movie out of the park and I wish they would deliver more thought provoking material such as this!
The Gift of Grace (2021)
Decent Movie With Spiritual Message
This movie has a decent enough storyline. I was drawn into the characters. What I did not agree with and did not like is the lack of the background story of the wife. I felt that the wife played an equal part in the husband being distracted because of her obsession with their daughters. The movie never addresses this. The movie addresses the background of the young lady from St. Louis, but not of the wife. The film took the time to highlight the mental state of the wife but never uncover the cause of it, left a void in the movie. In my opinion, this movie is incomplete and should have included why she was so obsessed or overly protective of the girls.
