Wu xia (2011)
Redefines the martial arts movie genre
one of the best martial arts movies I've seen in recent years, along with 2010 Reign of Assassins, have become two of my all time favorite martial arts movies. both Donnie Yen and Takeshi Kaneshiro gave a very strong performance. I'd rate this as Donnie Yen's best movie in terms of acting, he's really improved a lot in just a few years, no wonder he's becoming such a mega star in Asia nowadays, it's movies like Wu Xia definitely help his career, of course some of the credit goes to the highly highly acclaimed director Peter Chan, who knows how to get the most out of his casts. This is such a refreshing movie for the martial arts genre, I predict this film will win a lot of awards next year, either Donnie Yen or Takeshi Kaneshiro will take home the best actor title.
Gai shi ying xiong (1992)
Definitely among Michael Hui's best
First of all, don't be fooled by the low score (5.7) on IMDb (not enough users vote on it anyway), it's not a good indication how good this movie is.
I totally agree with the previous poster that this movie is one of Michael Hui's best films! And I have seen most of Michael Hui's movies to make such a bold comment! As a matter of fact I liked it even better than his other classics such as "The Private Eyes", "Security Unlimited", etc. I'd probably rated it as my 2nd favorite Michael Hui's movie closely behind the great "Chicken and Duck Talk". That tells you how much I love this movie! Highly recommended movie if you love Michael Hui's humor style.
Dei seung chui keung (2001)
Decent movie
I thought this movie would suck too, but I was pleasantly surprised by this movie after seeing it.
It's really a pretty good film, I like it it's not just about action, but it's also about the philosophy of life and competition. The ending will surprise a lot of people for sure, at first I didn't know why it ended like that but after thinking about the whole movie I realize it makes perfect sense.
Overall this one is definitely worth a look.
I'd also recommend Tung Wai's other work "Hitman" starting Jet Li, it's also one of the most under-rated movies.
PTU (2003)
a very unique, very enjoyable film.
This movie shows the new style of HK action movie and it's directed by arguablely the best HK director today Johnny To, This movie reminds me of Johnny To's other great movie The Mission (1999) and both films have a similar style that is unique from others, definatelly worth watching.
Gam gai (2002)
great film, great performance
this movie first got my attention when it drew rave reviews in HK early this year, but when I rent the DVD, I thought it was even better than what I expected, overall I think this is the most entertaining HK movie of the year. I like it better than "Wu Jian Dao" (Infernal Affairs) which was voted the best HK movie the same year. I just think Gam Gai is a more entertaining and more memorable movie. Not to mention the great performance by Sandra Ng. The story is touching and very funny at times, and although it's a bit predictable, the ending is still very good. I plan to buy the DVD after renting the DVD. Highly recommended.
