The X Files: Oubliette (1995)
"Oubliette"
I was so proud of myself when I saw the title of this episode and said, "I know what that word means!" I wanted to write a review to tell you guys because I find it so ironic that the episode is called this, but the word is never even mentioned nor explained. But it completely fits the episode!
"Oubliette" is French for 'dungeon' and can also be connected to another French word, "Oublier," which means 'forget.' In other words...forgotten dungeon. An Oubliette was a Medieval torture chamber in which prisoners were thrown into a room below the floor. This room had no windows and the only way out was by a door high in the ceiling, the very door in which they were cast into. The prisoners in there were then intentionally forgotten about and many of them died from starvation or from going mad.
I love that the writers did their research and I absolutely LOVE this episode! A wonderful Mulder-centered episode and if that wasn't enough, it is also beautifully written.
(PS: I'm sorry if I got some of the French definitions wrong. I don't speak French, but I know all of that through research)
Argo (2012)
There is not one bad thing about this movie!
I just saw this movie for the first time today and I can honestly say that I was truly surprised and impressed by Ben Affleck. I've always been a fan of his and his acting, but this movie was incredible. I don't understand why people don't like it! They say that's just a movie about 6 people trying to get out of Iran, but let me tell you...it is suspenseful, it is wonderfully written, beautifully directed. During the film, I could feel my body growing tense because I was so nervous.
Many people might think that this only won Best Picture because everyone was so mad that the Academy basically robbed Ben Affleck of a nomination for Best Director. I beg to differ! Don't get me wrong, that might have been involved with it's winning, but don't just watch it and look for the faults of why it shouldn't have won. Look for the reasons it might have as I mentioned above. The writing, the direction, the intensity and suspense you as an audience member will experience.
You should definitely see this if you haven't already. You might be pleasantly surprised by it :)
Book of Blood (2009)
The problem with this movie...
Let me get one this straight...I am not a fan of horror movies. I LOVE thrillers. Not horror. The only reason I watched this movie is because I am a fan of Jonas Armstrong. After watching this, all in all, it was NOT that bad. Of course, it could of been much better.
First things first. The story. I know this is based off of a short story, but it seems like the writers wanted to make sure they didn't change anything. Because it was taken from a short story, there was plenty of room to develop a storyline around the paranormal activity. On that note, the character development was absolutely dreadful. Simon's was...OK...but everyone else's was HORRIBLE! Am I the only one who thought everyone in this movie came off as really perverted? Because, they did to me. Since we, as an audience, don't identify with the characters on any personal level, this movie lacks the emotional story that it could have had.
Next, the love story. I don't even know if you could call in a "love story." The relationship between Simon and Mary is never fully explained and, like I said before: Since we, as an audience do not identify with the characters there is no emotional content there. Their relationship was so random! Couldn't they have just made her his employer and given him a younger girl? Or better yet, have no love story at all! Which brings me to the love scenes...please keep in mind that this is not a movie for youngsters. And since there was no emotional connection to the love story, those scenes were very awkward and came off as very perverted.
Lastly, the SCARES. This, in my opinion, is the worst part of this movie. Every single "wanna-be-scare" in this movie is exactly the same. In you are writing a horror or thriller movie that is very repetitive in terms of suspense, you have the same thing happen, but under different circumstances and situations. Different things have to happen in order to keep the audience interested. Most movies like this, the scares star small and then get big or they start big, get small and get HUGE at the end. This movie...they start big and they stay big. There is nothing special about it.
Now, you're probably wondering why I'm giving this a 7/10 after all of this criticism, but like I said earlier the movie was not THAT bad! Minus the emotional content and good scares. The acting was OK. I'll be honest, I think Jonas Armstrong saved this movie.
All I'm saying is that is was an OK movie, but it could have been a lot better.
Robin Hood (2006)
The Best Robin Hood!!!
I honestly do not understand why people hate on this series so much! I know this review is coming really late and that the show ended years ago, but I only just started watching it about a month ago and I am STILL hooked on it! I think is it one of the best TV shows out there (or rather, that was out there. :) I have always been very interested in the Robin Hood Legend. In fact, I'm writing a report on it, which is requiring a ton of research! This show, in my opinion, was 100x better than the Russell Crowe movie. This show aired first, but having seen the Crowe movie, I am so glad that I found this!
Jonas Armstrong is just a phenomenal Robin Hood. He's attractive and is just a wonderful actor. I hope that he gets some good roles in the future because he really is just remarkable. I like that fact that the Robin Hood is this series has been written to have flaws. Most of the time this character (or any "superhero" for that matter) is written with little to no flaws whatsoever. But in this modern-day telling, it shows Robin Hood's arrogant, selfish and darker side in many episodes. One of the best would be the episode called "Tattoo? What Tattoo?" And Jonas Armstrong does a fantastic job with that side of the character. He can be pretty terrifying. Of course it still has that idea that he's the hero of the people. You couldn't do a Robin Hood without including all that he stands for!
Lucy Griffiths plays Marian to a T! She is incredible in this role! She and Jonas have so much chemistry, it's almost hard to believe it. I'll be honest...Robin and Marian's is one of the best love stories I have ever seen written for the small screen! It defiantly keeps you on your toes! But if you don't like the love story, there is plenty of action to go around. The fighting sequences in this show never cease to amaze me! They just continuously get better and better with each passing episode!
The cast is BRILLIANT! Everyone in this show is cast perfectly and the stories are really wonderful as well! One thing I absolutely have to say though...the musical score in this is the most amazing I have EVER heard on any TV show!
This show has made me cry on numerous episodes and there aren't many shows that can do that. A show about a centuries old legend that touches the heart of hundreds of people! The end of Season 2 can make anybody cry! Regardless if you like the show or not! I'll admit, the first ~10 minutes of the 1st episode are kind of cheesy and weird, but don't just turn it off! I PROMISE IT GETS BETTER! Give this show a chance...you just might be pleasantly surprised!
