Are We Not Cats (2016)
Playfully Revolting Indie Diamond
This film is what independent film making is all about; going back to the original way films were made, be it in Europe or in the U.S., where some of the best roles are also played by people who have probably never acted before in their life. Michael Patrick Nicholson and Chelsea Lopez both have standout performances, nomination worthy among the heavy hitters.
Though I'm sure Xander Robin (the director) and his fellow crew members had their obstacles in this his first feature film, it is an accomplishment of which they should all be immensely proud. I enjoyed a new (yet nostalgic) direction for film, in an exciting, artistic, playfully revolting masterpiece.
If you haven't seen Are We Not Cats yet, go find a way to get it! It will sicken you how much you'll love it.
The Endless (2017)
Stunning Independent Release
I'll be the first to say that I honestly was not excited to see a film about returning to a cult, which in the first 10 minutes of watching "The Endless," is exactly what you think your in for... but I was pleasantly surprised by how this film unraveled itself. The story is no run-of-the-mill, predictable sci-fi yarn.
With believable acting and some spine-tingling special effects, I was quickly embroiled in the two heroes outcome, and emotionally invested in the enormity of the film's message. I recommend this film to anyone who has an imagination, and who's fear of the unknown doesn't keep them from finding answers.
Chi o sû nendo (2017)
Awesome Indie Film
Vampire Clay was, much to my surprise, an incredible independent film with a relatively unknown cast. The epitome of a, "Midnight Movie," it stands on top of the strangeness scale, and shows you images you never thought you'd see in your lifetime.
More of a laugh-'er than a horror flick, the slapstick antics will inspire giggling fits. The only drawback was a lack of stop-motion animation sequences, which I felt would have benefited the movie in a big way.
Solyaris (1972)
Classic Tarkovsky Masterpiece
This political satyre disguises itself as a science fiction drama, where the main character . From the start of the film, intrigue and suspense are palpable as smoke, and guide the viewer through strange warnings and questionable actions.
Solaris has a dream-like quality to it, which Tarkovsky relishes in. The legends surrounding the director should be impetus enough to watch this movie, but much merit can be given to the film's direction, which has been mimicked many times since.
Isle of Dogs (2018)
One Word: Magnificent
Woo hoo! Finally a film that lived up to its trailer! One word describes this film: Magnificent. The casting was exquisite, making full use of the plethora of actors that Anderson has in his cadre of stars.
The animation itself was exceptional, and seemed that no detail in set design was ignored. The story was thoughtful and intelligent, and the central themes of dignity and respect took this film to the next level.
Upgrade (2018)
Surprising Modest Budget Thriller
Upgrade gives another fresh take on a future where technology has gone wrong. It's interesting shots and innovative camera moves (creating disorientation) make for the best features of this film's allure. Also packed with witty dialogue and interesting plot twists throughout, Upgrade leaves you with scenes indelibly engraved on your brain (Warning!).
I was pleasantly surprised by the filmmakers' use of a modest studio-level budget in their choices for special effects, set design and cast.
Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018)
Amazing Documentary
Won't You Be My Neighbor was a poignant documentary about one of the most influential figures in the last 100 years. Not only did this film confront the same issues that face America today, but also gives the most enveloping sense of nostalgia, like Grandma's old wool blanket. Feelings (rather than actions) are at the forefront of this film's theme, as was the case in Fred Rogers' life.
He fought an amazing battle for child development, but the film also shows his inner-struggle with other more taboo, contemporary societal issues such as morality. I felt an overwhelming inner peace after seeing this film, like I just realized a childhood truth, that I've long since forgotten.
Once Upon a Superhero (2018)
Innovative and Fascinating
Burgeoning director John M. Kline gives a refreshing new look at American culture and our obsession with superheroes. Once Upon a Superhero was thoughtful and innovative, and included standout performances by Adam Marcinowski, Thomas Dekker and Ron Bush. With dazzling effects and breathtaking scenes, I was instantly transported into a world where all of our days are numbered, and nothing is as it seems.
5th Passenger (2017)
Impressive Sci-fi Indie
An impressive sci-fi film, 5th Passenger delves into horror, noir and psychological thriller genres, while disguising itself as a modest budget space film, filled with eye candy.
With solid performances from its veteran ensemble cast, this movie is a must see.
