Ilargi Guztiak (2020)
Art on film
This is a great drama about a girl coming to terms with the death of her loved ones as she is gifted immortality. The vampire theme is used to drive the story and not just add shock value. I personally loved the film as its a breath of fresh air just be warned its not a horror movie. The musical score was exceptionally gorgeous! I wish there was a little bit more character development between Maia and the boy she met to help flesh out emotions more but overall 9/10.
Jeremy (1973)
a raw, realistic portrait of love
This film is a representation of that childhood crush, the girlfriend you had for one week that showed you the world, that fleeting girl you liked and then disappeared. It leaves you with that searing heart wrenching feeling that we all now so well. This is film making, where you can appreciate pure human emotion. Do yourself a favor and watch this one alone though because it's definitely not a group watch. Jeremy is introverted and a musician so i was able to identify with him. so maybe i'm biased here but the story and characters are well fleshed out for the screen time they are given. It's a shame these sort of films are pushed to the way side. 9/10.
Carmilla (2019)
Not bad, but not vampiric either.
The atmosphere was there, the characters were there, although not fully fleshed out, but the vampirism was not. I couldn't even completely grasp what Carmilla was doing to Laura, considering she never feeds on Laura or really does anything to cause Laura's illness. The whole film plays with the fact Carmilla is odd but never gets to the root of what she is or what she does. A lot of kissing between the two main characters which should have technically been vampire bites (this would have substituted for so many unanswered questions and filled in the plot holes). There is a scene towards the end where Carmilla walks into the room with Laura and we see her reflection. It would have been much better if we didn't see Carmilla in the reflection and she would have startled Laura instead. It's the minute details that would have aided to perfecting this movie to me. Miss Fontaine finds a book, possibly satanic in nature from Carmilla's carriage but we never learn what power she harnesses, if any. In the end Carmilla gets staked in the heart as Laura watches. It's as if the director purposely took out all the key elements and answers from the original story and we are left with a shell of what could have been. If you don't compare it to the novel and view it as stand alone film it's not bad by any means but as I stated earlier if you use the title "Carmilla" and have everything present except the main premise.....it just doesn't click. I am biased for this story however regardless of it all and the cinematography was gorgeous, as was the cast and atmosphere. I stand by a rating of 5/10. Let's just hope it comes out on blu ray.
White Heat (1949)
made it ma! top of the world!
Hands down the best crime/gangster film in history. Cagney has cemented himself as my favorite actor after seeing this and The Public Enemy. White Heat is a staple film that constitutes a 10/10. I'm just happy to have viewed this in my lifetime.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
Superb. Few films touch the heart like this one.
I saw this movie when I was much younger than I am today and I rated it about a 7/10 back then. Having just recently seen it again, it stands in my top 10. This film really does hit home on so many levels, it's sentimental and heart warming. Times were different back then but I think as we get older this film really stands as a testament to how we should cherish life. Older audience's will understand this film at its very core as opposed to a younger generation, no doubt.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945)
My favorite movie of all time, it's unparalleled
Even if you're not into older movies I suggest everyone to view it at least once and by yourself. Probably the movie to brings me to tears every time I watch it all the way through. The struggles that the family go through are heart felt and emotional. It can be overly sentimental at times but it just adds to the charm. -Spoilers- When the dad plays "lori" on the piano you can see in his eyes the anguish of his soul, they just don't act like that anymore. And when he dies, the situations they face as a family are very real. It's a shame, almost a crime that this never had a proper DVD release, and yet we see "the avengers" and "harry potter" getting more recognition.
