Dance 100 (2023)
How to NOT direct a dance show
It's mind-boggling how wrongly this show was directed.
Zoom ins and zoom outs, fast cuts to nowhere. Showing the audience at key moments instead of the dancers (ie Brandi's reveal in the second to last episode happened off camera).
Directing a dance show is not about getting the action from multiple angles. It's about focusing on what's important and letting the viewers see the whole picture.
Ironically, the best way to direct a dance show is by doing it in the simplest possible way. A camera, in the middle, at a zoom level that shows everything and is as close as possible.
It's like being in the theater. What's the best seat? Smack in the middle of the room. Directing a dance show is about being brutally minimalistic with your directing choices.
Netflix produced a show that looked great if you attended the live show but looks terrible on the screen.
Plus, not letting the choreographers choose their own songs and at the same time giving them songs that fall more or less into the same genre made it even worse. Oh, and those cheesy, uninspired story themes? Who chose these?
Next in Fashion (2020)
Season 2 was the only time I agreed with the judges
Season 2 was the only time I agreed with the judges when it comes to who should win and advance to the next round.
The winner deserved it; had the most creative and fresh perspective out of all the contestants that went to the finale.
I do prefer Alexa Chung over Gigi. She's wittier and overall a more interesting presenter.
On the other hand, why not Alexa and Gigi? I don't see the guy putting that much of an insightful input or being overall entertaining.
I disliked the fact that the judges always agreed with whatever the other judge/guest was saying giving me king's court vibes but I guess that's how things are done in the entertainment and fashion industry.
Industry (2020)
Cheap soap opera dressed in a fancy suit
The world of finance is just a hook (and it did the job) for a mediocre at best new age soap opera.
If we take all the characters out of that bank and have them working for a B2B company selling restaurant equipment then it wouldn't affect the main plots in the slightest.

(My review is too short (and the devs didn't bother to add a character counter so I'm adding this)

Rap Sh!t (2022)
It's actually not that bad after sticking for 3-4 episodes (Deserves 6.5 stars)
Yes, the first episode gives you vertigo because of the showrunners' decision to have the audience see everything through the phones of the characters, getting blasted by notifications on the screen plus trap songs coming from let and right.
They did tame this a bit later on which made the show better.
The writers were also able to come up with nice obstacles for the main characters, and made believable decisions as to the kind of wrong choices the characters are making.
I'll watch season 2 because it seems that the showrunners can take feedback.
The only thing that continued to bother me throughout the entire 1st season (and I hope they will fix it in season 2) was the soundtrack, due to the numerous songs featured per episode, preventing the audience from taking a mental breather between scenes.
Elvis (2022)
Directed like a movie trailer that lasts 2 hours & 40 mins
It all feels disjointed. Everything is over the top. Even Tom Hanks, who speaks like those cartoon villains that say "Mwahaha" in the end speak.
The modern hip hop soundtrack solidified the director's approach and sinks the movie even lower.
WeCrashed: The Power of We (2022)
They didn't do the Professor justice
They depicted Professor Scott Galloway as another Jim Cramer, which is far from truth; and because of that, the creators didn't manage to communicate to the audience the kind of gravitas and impact Galloway's opinions tend to have in the finance world.
Other that that, enjoyable episode.
DMZ (2022)
So polished it hurts. Give the comic book a chance though.
I remember reading the first few issues of the comic book many years ago.
I don't really remember what happened but I remember it being really good, which means that the creators of the show deviated a LOT from the original material.
Everything is so polished in this show and the way society formed in the DMV feels incredibly naive in a way that happens only on TV.
The writers definitely chose the wrong direction, the director definitely didn't have the budget to create the atmosphere of DMV, and the producers could not save the end result from looking lame no matter how much money they've decided to pay to add catchy hip hop songs post-production.
The Last Kingdom: Episode #5.1 (2022)
Worst "invasion" ever
Watching how Brida "invaded" Syg-what's-his-name's castle with her 13-man "army" is just ridiculous.
And her trying to appear menacing in a psycho way looks ridiculous. She can't pull it off as an actress and with those ridiculous lines given to her.
Watched the first 4 seasons but I just can't invest any more time on this; it's too dumb to bear.
Formula 1: Drive to Survive: A Mountain to Climb (2022)
Spoiled rich kid of Russian oligarch blames everyone but himself
By the way, the kid came LAST and was lapped by many drivers in that race; I assume his dad paid Netflix to protect his kid and make it look like it is a good driver.
Murderville: The Magician's Assistant (2022)
If Conan couldn't save this, no one could.
It's just not funny. The plot points of the episode are so moronic and Arnett's jokes and acting are so dumb that not even Conan, a master of improvisation, could make it funny.
Mayor of Kingstown: The Lie of the Truth (2022)
This is getting out of hand..
This was the lamest, least believable prison riot I've seen. The way the guards acted, how much time the inmates had after the alarm went off...
Mike becoming a murderer for Iris in the previous episode is just too stupid to be believable. It's not like there was a relationship (of any kind) that developed between them in the previous episodes.
Kyle's heroics while his life is in imminent danger inside the prison makes zero sense plus the out of place preachiness of Miriam McLusky really bring the quality of the show down.
Hopefully this is a one-and-done season type of show.
Heels (2021)
Soap opera in disguise.
Church, trucks, country music, pies on the windowsill, the places you used to go when you were hunting as a kid, hiding the hard liquor in the sock drawer...this show is just a rural America-themed boyish soap opera with wrestling as its manly hook.
James May: Our Man in... (2020)
How to make a travel show in Japan feel boring
Only James May could achieve making a travel show in Japan boring.
Easily the worst sense of humor and lack of creativity I've ever seen in a host of a travel show.
On top of that he does come out as petulant and disrespectful.
I watched all 6 episodes solely because it takes place in Japan.
His guides (especially the one in Tokyo) were way more interesting than him.
Clarkson with his farm show proved that he is the reason James May has a career. Lucky James.
Making the Cut: Finale (2021)
Yet again, the wrong designer wins it all
The judges have been carrying Andrea on their backs (especially Harlow) for many episodes, going as far as to declare her a winner too on ep. 6 next to Garry.
Scott described things exactly as they were in his plea in favor of Garry, but Klum's tackiness and Harlow's favoritism won, showing that this show continues to crown the wrong designer as it did in season 1.
Zola (2020)
Read the Twitter thread. Skip the movie.
This was the worst project/director pairing that someone could come up with.
Any moment in Zola's infamous story that's exciting and has tension, the director suffocated it by going for an artsy and pretentious approach.
For example, that scene where they are trying to take Stefani back from 2 guys with shotguns in a hotel room? The director cuts away from the action and play a soothing screensaver-type of graphic on the screen. Smh
It just doesn't get more pretentious than the way the director approached this project.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Zack Snyder: Master of Blabber and the Superfluous
Waaay too long for no reason. Easily the worst editing choices I've seen a movie.
When it comes to theme and story choices, the movie is a master of none.
Emperor Zack has no clothes and doesn't deserve to keep making movies with this high budget.
Generation Hustle (2021)
Nice, light entertainment to pass the time.
Nice, light entertainment to pass the time.
Don't expect deep, investigative work but you will definitely be entertained.
The pacing is very good and it makes you want to watch the next episode.
Godless (2017)
It's just a first draft
The story choices and characters are what you get when a good writer writes a first draft but proceeds with shooting the script.
The Profit (2013)
Vulture Capitalist
Just read the article "Exclusive: 20 Business Owners Claim There's a Dark Side to Marcus Lemonis's Reality TV Show 'The Profit'" by Inc.
You'll know what happens in the editing room and what the business owners have to sign (and lose their voice in the process.)
Irréversible (2002)
A masterpiece I can't recommend to anyone.
Irréversible is a masterpiece I wouldn't recommend to anyone to see it. It is a masterpiece because it manages to REALLY submerge the viewer into its world. Into its nightmare. I have never seen a more faithful cinematic depiction of something in any other movie. The bad thing is that the movie is about rape. How really a rape looks and feels like. And it looks awful. It feels awful. After the credits you don't feel good. But you are glad you saw this.
Many said that this movie promotes violence and abuse against women. They couldn't be further from the truth. If I was 99.99% certain that I would never do something like this to a woman, I am now 100% certain that I won't.
It's a shame that this thing happens everyday, and in a way, I felt "lucky" I could take a peak at this everyday nightmare thanks to Noé's masterpiece.
There's no other director that ever came close in doing something that feels so realistic to the viewer. There's no other movie that will make you feel worse than this one. There's no other movie that will be engraved in your mind like this one.
Watch it, but you won't feel good.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010)
Beyond any expectation (in a good way)!!!!
First things first. If you want to see an exceptionally historically accurate TV series about Spartacus then go watch a documentary or read a book. If you believe that the fact that the actors have perfect white teeth or that Pericles from Thrace is a black man with dreadlocks does not fit to the era then again, watch a documentary. This show (as all TV Shows) is meant to entertain not educate and if you expect yourself to be educated through TV Shows then you are a fool.
Moving on; some said/wrote that the series is nothing more than a porn with gore and cussing. I beg to differ.
For starters, wouldn't you expect from people of that era that treated other people as slaves and entertained themselves by having gladiators fighting to the death or by throwing Christians to the lions to cuss like that or have orgies? Wouldn't you expect from people that fought every day to stay alive just to entertain their "masters" to be so violent? If you like everything to be sugarcoated and "politically correct" then this series is definitely not for you.
Now that I kinda explained why there is so much sex, gore and cussing let me tell you why I loved the series. The subplots are AMAZING! You could never figure out how the 4th episode would end. It is brilliant how the personal goals of each character get tangled with the goals of the other characters. I really like that in every episode there are so many things going on.
I think the casting is also well-chosen and combining all the above with the whole rawness, blood, gore, sex, violence and awesome visuals would explain why I believe that this series is a must-see (at least its first season).
Sine Missione!
