Broken (2006)
Entertaining
The thing with Broken is, despite being a horror movie, I think it only appeals to a select audience. I saw it under the impression that it was a lot like Saw and, although this is true at first, it ends up having more in common with Misery, with a character lead plot. It is very gruesome and also fairly amateur, yet still well made considering these two made the film on no budget. Another problem I had with the film was that they tried to create a complex villain, although he ended up coming across as all over the place. It also seemed at times that gore was just there to keep the audience interested. Overall, I really enjoyed this film, and made for uncomfortable viewing which is great as far as I'm concerned. If you watch this film bear in mind that is not a lot like Saw, it was made on next to budget, and is a valiant attempt at a character-lead horror.
Ladder 49 (2004)
Oh dear oh dear oh dear
I have to admit I went to see this movie with pretty low expectations, however, I didn't realise it would be worse than I thought it would be. It was typical horribly cheesy stereotypical formulaic rubbish. Fair enough the acting was good and the set pieces were well done. This I thought was one of Travolta's better performances in recent although that isn't saying a great deal to be perfectly honest. But after a while they became repetitive and pointless. I couldn't relate to any of the characters and found myself laughing at the patheticness of the film not with the film. They tried to portray these men as being close companions and having a laugh but it was just unbearable. Obviously everyone differs in taste but if you find cheesy romantic yet bravado tough men irritating then avoid this film like the plague.
Soul Survivors (2001)
Oh dear what garbage
The subtitle alone let me know what I was in for. This has to be one of the worst films ever. It has a rubbish story line that tries to be complex but comes off as just incredibly stupid. The acting is pretty awful too (altho Eliza Dushku is hot). This film also has one of the most predictable and also pathetic endings ever that doesn't even make sense. It tries to be much cleverer than it is and appears to be a pathetically unscary version of Abre Tus Ojos/Vanilla Sky. Overall I would advise you steer well clear of this unless you wanna see Eliza Dushku pulling another woman (who by the way is incredibly weird).
Aliens (1986)
Best film ever
(Beware some mild plot spoilers) I think that Aliens is a huge improvement on Alien. Better in many ways although it did lose a lot of tension and horror but more than made up for this in nearly every other way. Maybe I will be a bit biased considering that I think Aliens is the greatest movie ever but don't think I'm a pubescent teenager who loves films where mindless violence occurs eg Starship Troopers (which by the way is also amazingly good fun). I think Aliens is overall superb. It may take roughly 70 minutes for any real action to take place but you're hooked throughout and it doesn't seem slow at all. The movie has some brilliant set pieces including the facehuggers in the medi-lab scene and the end battle. These may not be as infamous as the chestburster scene from Alien but they are still tremendous and in many ways they excel it. I think Alien is the definitive sci-fi film with it's brilliant imagination and freshness which brung about a new era for films about different species. Pure genius.
