Smallville: Harvest (2010)
low of the season
I think I understand the premise of this episode: Clarke without powers in the episode after he proclaims his ability to Lois. What will happen? Although there is something quaint with such a premise, is seemed rather unnecessary. I didn't need a Amish cult to prove that Clarke and Lois love one another sacrificially with or without powers; it has been proved throughout the last two seasons.
The sub plot involving Tess Mercer and young Lex was less compelling than it was confusing. In a series which seems to veer away from fatalism (Clake), the writers seemed quite keen for other characters always to be evil.
In the overall arch of the season so far I felt this was a somewhat an ebb. This is season 10; it is no time for plateau episodes, nor recapping what we already know. Get on with it!
Leap Year (2010)
A very fun movie
I am one of those people who enjoy romantic comedies, but have experienced so many cliché plots, poor dialogue and just not very feel good feel. Yet I am please to record Leap Year was a fresh relief. Although Leap Year does contain many cliché movie moments: getting wet in the rain, falling in mud, characters forced to share the same bed etc, there are many aspects which makes this movie unique and memorable.
First, the casting. Amy Adams and Matthew Goode worked extremely well together, but it was the Irish minor characters that really reinforced the leads performances. It was a shame not to see more of John Lithgow, considering he is such an excellent actor and was only used in one scene.
Second, the plot. I think the leap year idea was always going to be a bit tenuous if this was what was driving the script. Yet the writers did well to use it as a hook and kept story moving. I particularly enjoyed the building of the relationship between Anna and Decclan. It was nice that it slow and steady, and there was no random sex scene which was out of beat with the plot.
Finally, something must be said about the Irish location. The scenery was breath taking and really gave Leap Year something unique. As Anna was discovering the beauty of Ireland, so were the audience too.
All in all, a very fun, moving and enjoyable movie
Smallville: Isis (2010)
200 too strong for 201?
Having to follow episode 200 "Homecoming" was always going to be a tough gig. What I think was meant to be a highly climactic episode perhaps didn't meet the standard of the previous, and maybe finished a bit too similarly.
A disappointment in episode was that the main plot involving the Isis necklace did not hold much integrity in of itself. It seemed like it was all fuzz waiting for the final two minutes of the episode.
Nevertheless, for smallville fans this episode has been long awaited for. It was probably never going match our expectations, but it was an amazing moment for the characters which was well set up by the previous seasons and episodes.
