Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy (2009)
Really, a must see for all Comedy enthusiasts
I caught this documentary on Showtime a couple months ago and I have already preordered my copy of the DVD (comes out 4/27/10). I absolutely loved this documentary, it forces you to look at Comedy in a different light, especially related to the Black experience in America. The film is full of hilarious clips, great insight, and a strong overarching theme that every commentator really brought home. One thing is for sure - this documentary really makes you wish Richard Pryor was still around and that Eddie Murphy was still doing stand-up. Luckily, we can youtube these moments on demand, but we are at a point where there is a curious lull in Black Comedy. Really makes you wonder who will be the next to step in to usher the cause into its next phase...
Laffapalooza! (2008)
Family friendly and really very funny
By far the best Laffapalooza stand up yet! Mark Curry, Tracy Morgan, and Sheryl Underwood are ALL hilarious! I can't even pick a favorite routine. Seriously, this DVD could double as an ab workout I laughed so hard. The best part about Laffapalooza is that there is no inappropriate language so you don't have to worry about where the kids are when you're watching it. Our kids probably don't even know what a stand up routine is like since we very rarely feel comfortable letting them watch the same comedians that we find funny. Tracy is more of a host than a featured comic so keep in mind that he's not on for very long. Mark and Sheryl have definitely outdone themselves on this one though.
The Stick Up Kids (2008)
Great Story!
This is a pretty good crime drama! Between the slumlords, robberies and seduction, let's just say this film is full of surprises. I was impressed with the quality of the film and the overall cast as well. There are some fairly known actors in the film including Bryce Wilson, Mel Jackson, and Hawthorne James! I was unfamiliar Tariq Alexander but he fit his role of "smooth talking Harlem cat" perfectly. I'd prefer if the film was a little bit shorter but otherwise you should definitely check this out. The end is predictable but they definitely mix it up with some unexpected twists! No spoiler alerts here tho! Watch the movie!
Truth Hall (2008)
Sisters unite!
I really enjoyed Truth Hall. I can't say that it reminded me of anything that has happened between me and any of my friends, BUT I do know of folks that have suffered similar dramas around a wedding. And i do know of more than one crew of friends from college that have really gone through it when they reunite again. I was really impressed with Jade Jenise Dixon who wrote, directed AND starred in this movie. That in and of itself is no small feat. But to also create characters that are memorable on top of that is really remarkable. I hope to be able to see more from this cast. Seems like there is a lot more to tell. Definitely worth checking out!
