Underworld: Awakening (2012)
The biggest Werewolf in history!
I am a fan of the Underworld concept and the movies. This movie tried a few things different but still had Vampires, Werewolves and Hybrids. This movie also had the biggest, strongest, most dangerous werewolf in film history. I am a huge werewolf fan and this movie had a huge werewolf :) He was big, powerful as hell and gave all challengers a nightmare. I missed Scott Speedman not being in the film, but Michael Corvinus did make an appearance. Confused yet? Well they had to use a little trickery to do it. I was worried this film would dismiss too much of what had happened before but it did not. I watched the film in 3D and it had a few seconds here and there of some particles and figures flashing at you but mostly it was the same feel as all 3D movies where it is more visual gimmicks than real substance. You definitely will not miss much if you watch it in 2D, and save some money while doing it. The movie itself is good and they tried some new things and continued to add to the Underworld legacy. They definitely left an ending where they have more story for another if it is successful enough and the powers that be want to do another one. very good entertainment if you like action, gory violence and vamps/wolves!
The Thing (2011)
A good addition to The Thing mythos
I am a huge fan of Carpenter's The Thing and I think this movie only adds to the story of the Thing. This movie captured the paranoia and intensity of the Carpenter movie and adds some additional elements to the story with different characters and creature configurations. I am glad I saw this at the theater and will be picking it up on Blu-ray. The movie entertained me and was better than I expected. It seems today that Hollywood is never serious with the product anymore with prequels and sequels with a few exceptions. Some of the creature configurations were truly horrific. You would definitely not want the Thing coming after you. The final scene ties into the Carpenter movie quickly and effectively. I was wondering exactly how they were going to do that. Overall a good and entertaining movie in this genre. I am glad it was made.
Terra Nova (2011)
Not that great, not that bad, somewhere in the middle
Not a bad start but nothing spectacular. Watching Terra Nova's premier was a hit and miss experience. I was expecting something a little bigger in regards to the story. Terra Nova runs with a well known formula and you will not see or hear anything new within this episode. The characters are OK, not a lot of chemistry between the main character and his wife and some typical manufactured family angst. The best thing is of course what we do not know about yet. The sixers may have some life as well as the real reasons why Terra Nova was planned and executed. I felt they spent way too much time dragging out the whole kids stuck in the car while the dinosaurs are attacking, didn't we see that in Jurassic Park years ago? I think they missed a real chance to establish mortal danger and one of the kids should have bit the dust. If you are that stupid for going into dinosaur land without a weapon/training then at least one kid needs to be dinosaur dinner. This show could build to something but I am getting the feeling the writers may not be that creative.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
From Comic Book to Screen, this one is a winner!
The Marvel character movies have been a mixed bag. I know when a film is being produced and directed by people outside the comics industry that some things are lost in translation and some things are changed simply so the director can put their individual mark on it. Up until last month, Iron Man was the best movie to capture the main idea of the character and story, in my opinion. Iron Man was a very true to the mythos and great to watch. Captain America is better and that is not taking anything away from Iron Man. Yes, still some aspects of the story was changed, but I felt this was a great translation that captured and added to Captain America. They handled the background story and cast of characters with intelligence. I think the original intent of Captain America's creator comes through and what his values were. They did a great job with Steve Rogers pre-super soldier serum with the visual effects. The plot was very good and moved along well developing the story. I do not even remember any bad language at all which is rare these days. If you like super heroes and want to be entertained for two hours then this movie will do it.
Watchmen (2009)
We are watching the Watchmen and all of the agents.......
OK, yes I loved the twelve issue comic series/graphic novel and blah blah. The movie itself is great. Is it the same as the graphic novel? No, but very close in most of the ways that counts. Some aspects were left out, some were sort of meshed together and some were new. You would expect this from a movie adaptation but you will be surprised to how well these things don't matter and how few there are. The basic concept is there and the actors bring it to life.
If you are a fan of Spider-man, X-men, and so forth, this is not the same type of movie that they are. This one is more akin to V for Vendetta (thanks again Mr. Moore) with even stronger concepts and wide angles. I would not avoid this movie if you like those types of movies, just know that it is a different story that just so happens to have men and women that dress up in it.
Like the 12 issues original series, this movie has everything going on in it and if you are a fan of the work then it is a must see.
My father watched it and did not know anything about the watchmen and he enjoyed it as well.
The Brothers Grimm (2005)
An original twist and a good adventure movie!
When I first watched this movie I had to view it in parts because of my kids. Maybe that is why it did not click with me at first. After viewing it again and on a better TV I was really surprised with how much I enjoyed the story and the adventure that takes place. I think this movie is original how they worked in different parts of the Grimm fairy tales into the movie. Many people will not remember but these fairy tales were very dark in nature and "child friendly" at all. Damon and Ledger both do a great job and are at times humorous. The beautiful Lena Headey plays her role with some intensity and Monica Belluci is always great in small doses. The funniest character in the movie has to be Calvaldi played by Peter Stormare. Jonathan Pryce also has some good scenes. I really liked the lighting in this movie and the set pieces. It reminded me of a brighter Sleepy Hollow. This movie bombed here in the US but made close to double overseas bringing it to a $105 million gross with a production budget of $88 million. It definitely should have made more in the US but sometimes things are missed with our audiences in my opinion. Great movie if you take it as the adventure story it is.
Halloween (2007)
He is big, Very big. And man is he fast.
OK people, listen up. This movie was never intended as a remake but as a new version of Halloween. If you want to see the same story then just watch the classic first Halloween from 1978. Some people have problems that Michael is big. Well, I do not know about you but being 6' 2" and 240 lbs. the first Michael did not scare me in a physical way. But the new Michael, my Lord, I would not even think about trying to take this guy on. he is physically and mentally intimidating. The mask has been upgraded as well to be even more sinister. I love the first movie from 1978, I own three different copies of it. Was it better? Yes in some ways it was. The new Halloween is better also in some ways. I had no problems either with Zombie fleshing out the origin story and the young Michael was almost as vicious as the older Michael. The story itself did use some elements from the first one of course, but it also was it's own movie which made it less predictable. So what if the kid came from a broken home type environment and was picked on in school, at least this was some kind of answer to why he was. In the original we have to just assume he is pure evil, but why that particular kid? The other children were not that way. When watching these types of movies you have to let go of the past and keep an open mind to what direction this Halloween could take in the future. My biggest hopes that a Halloween III will finally be made that actually has Michael Meyers in it. And maybe we will not get such a confusing story line that we saw in all of the past Halloween movies. Halloween 6? Good grief that was horrible and then we go back to the Jamie Lee Curtis saga like 4, 5, and 6 never happened. If you are a fan of Halloween and Michael Meyers, give this movie a chance. No, it is not your father's Michael Meyers but do you really want to see the exact same thing again?
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
I need some help here with a question/memory
I am trying to figure out a memory I have of a movie that I saw when I was a child. I am 32 now so it had to be an older movie. I believe it was some type of horror movie. I remember a woman crying and/or screaming while she was in a grave or something and people were covering her up with stones. The people that were doing this were wearing old style clothes maybe Amish but I am not sure. I really can not remember anything else about this movie except that this scene stuck with me.
Is this scene in Rosemary's Baby or is it some other movie?
Now I have one more film with a scene that sticks in my head. I think the movie may have had Vincent Price in it but I am not 100% certain. There was a oval giant bird bath shaped water container outside of a house and if I am remembering right there was a body or something in there. Also for some reason a dead bird in a cage or something comes to mind.
Sorry for the vagueness but I can remember just a few seconds and that is it.
Thanks for your help!
The Fog (2005)
Could have been better but still is worth a watch.
I know The Fog is getting some bad reviews all over. What I am surprised about is that the response to the movie seems to be that way because they expected it to be a great movie. I loved the idea of the original. I like the idea of this newer version. Both movies had flaws but both are watchable movies and definitely not the worst in the horror category.
Do I wish someone would take the Fog concept and make a really killer movie? Hells yes, but I don't think that will happen right now.
Until then, enjoy both movies for what they are. They are both movies that take a concept to a visual level but still leaves you wanting more in terms of plot and scares.
White Noise (2005)
avoid unless you like boring movies................
In my opinion this movie was very boring and the plot was just silly. Even with the subject matter of EVP you would think they could come up with something better than this. White Noise can be filed in the "Why did they make this" category. What was the purpose? It was not entertaining and it was not informative, but again that is just my opinion.
The movie is painstakingly dull. I would not say it even "had it's moments". You just sit there and keep waiting for something to happen. I am still not for sure what I wanted to happen but anything other than Keaton running around grimacing would have been good.
Elektra (2005)
Not bad at all, give it a chance.
I really do not understand the low score rating on this film. If you like action, fighting special effects, and a variety of characters (although not very developed) then give this movie a chance. The only reason I think it does have such a low score is because of comic fans (like me) think that every comic movie should be exactly like the comic or comics it was based on. But where is the fun in that? The X-Men and Spider-man movies definitely were not exactly like the comics and they were still good as movies. Is this the greatest comic adapted film? Hells no! But it definitely was a good action movie that was loosely based on the Elektra saga.
The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
A very entertaining movie.......
I know there have been some people that have stuck there noses up at this film. I even had my doubts about how good it was really going to be and went into the theater with medium to low expectations. The Chronicles of Riddick was very entertaining and had plenty of action. I enjoyed the fighting, escaping, steel-hide wolves, spaceship battles, stunning landscapes, locations, the story and the flow of how the director put all of these things together. This was not a "make me think" film and was never intended as such. It was an escape for about two hours. A great escape at that. I took my 57 year old father to see it and he loved the hell out of it too. We did not leave the movie talking about the plot twists or the exceptional dialogue. We did leave talking about the story that took place, the action scenes, and the ending.
The Rundown (2003)
Enjoyable action no-brainer
I was a little skeptical of this film because of the main star. I sat there hoping it would be better than the low end action movie and I was surprised that it was. I actually enjoyed this film with my family. It had some cool fighting scenes, good humor, and it was a pretty stand up action flick. Maybe I enjoyed it more because I thought it was going to be a stiff, but I give it a strong 8 out of ten for this type of film. Again this was not a thinking man's action movie. I did enjoy it more than the other fare like 'XXX' and other no-brainer action films. Hopefully the Rock will continue to surprise me with Walking Tall and his future movies. The big man can move!
The Medallion (2003)
I had to turn it off!
This was just a bad movie. It reeks! I turned it off with about 40 minutes left. The action was boring. It felt like I was watching a bad movie from the early 80's. Avoid it! Even if you are a Jackie Chan fan, avoid it! Why do the movie gurus even put this stuff on film? Probably because they know an idiot like me might give it a chance and check it out. They obviously could have done a better job from the ground up. Watch Shangai Noon or something if you need a Jackie Chan fix. I don't even think I saw Claire Forlani in the movie before I turned it off. My wife was so happy when I said the words "ok, let us turn this poor thing off". It burns my buns that movies like this still get the time of day to see actual filming.
Identity (2003)
Another Stink Bomb Twister of Nothing
Some people are saying this is a great movie. I did not see anything great about it. The whole plot is just yearning to be sophisticated but I think it is a waste.I left the theater feeling disappointed that I even bothered to buy tickets. Avoid at all costs!
