The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
Original 100 Xs Better
I cannot believe that this film was even made. Scott Derrickson is obviously a rookie. Considering the good job he did with Emily Rose, I found it hard to believe the way he went with this movie. And not surprising was Keanu Reeves who has played the same character in Speed, The Matrix(s), and this film. What do we call it? Oh yeah.....monotone! I actually didn't find any excitement in the script, the cgi, the acting, or even the opening or closing credits. Overall this movie should be given out on blu ray for free along with a coupon for free popcorn and soda. This won't make up for the time lost seeing this pile of nonsense, but hopefully the theaters will start getting the hint soon that with 3d TV, blu ray, on demand, and netflix on most new TVs, soon they will be out of business.
The Last American Virgin (1982)
Teen Movie Gone Mad
You can add up the sins pretty quick in this movie. Drug use, Prostitution, Friends letting Friends drive drunk, Abortion (at Christmas), Stalking, Cheating, Using people, Lying, STDs, Bullying, Stealing......Overall though it is a throwback watching it now to the beginning of the 1980s. Good Soundtrack, Good Storyline, and surprisingly, the acting wasn't as bad as I thought. In 1982 I gave this movie a 5, but after almost 30 years, I gave it a 10 as it is a true reminder of the teen set and attitude of that era. The pair, Golan-Globus brought you this movie under the Canon Film Group. They also brought you The Delta Force with Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin, Death Wish sequels, and a host of other films. The Last American Virgin stands out to me because it expresses the ups and downs of teen love as well as the let down by assuming. "See it or Be it" as the poster implied back when.
Rock Rock Rock! (1956)
1950s Classic Music Videos.....Sort Of
The reason I gave it 9 was for the acting but outside of that, this is a great movie of historical rock-n-roll value. Laverne Baker, The Moonglows, Chuck Berry, The Flamingos, and the key double dose scene at the end with Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers performing "Baby Baby" and "I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent" (Frankie was 13 at the time of filming.) Outside of the great performers, Alan Freed plays himself, Tuesday Weld (Also 13 at time of filming but looks more older)plays Dori who when singing is actually a dub of Connie Francis. The plot revolves around Dori wanting a specific dress and her dad, wanting to show her some responsibility tells her she has to earn a portion of the money to pay for the dress. This causes an issue when her nemesis allows her to loan her money at an illegal rate and refuses to pay it back. "Grab Your Partner, Grab Your Gal, And Rock" From Vanguard Films (1956)
Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957)
Not historic, but okay.
This is an entertaining movie and contains great acting. However, it has a lot of dramatic usage. This would be more fair if advertised as loosely based on a true account. The OK Corral scene happens at the OK Corral but in reality, it doesn't. Also the actual "gunfight" lasts for seconds and stays in a general area of an alley by the photographers store. In the movie, the gunfight lasts way too long and moves around way too much. Overall, it is watchable. But Tombstone (Released Christmas Day 1993), also not 100% accurate, but comes a hell of a lot closer to fact. Remember for its time (1957), it was a tell tale with mega actors and a big set which was fully utilized. It was also the dawn of TV westerns. Check them both out and compare for yourself!
