Be Cool (2005)
I loved this movie!
Having never seen "Get Shorty", I'm not sure how seriously anyone is going to take my comments, but I'll give it a shot anyways because I can't pass up the opportunity to gush about how great this movie was! Most people would probably think that the movie was dominated by John Travolta's cool acting style. But it wasn't. The show was stolen by none other than Vince Vaughn and The Rock. I mean, Vince Vaughn's Raji character was absolutely hilarious! He played that role so well; i really believed that he was Raji. And as for Elliot (Rock), he was so over the top and really seemed to have fun with the role. And the eyebrow thing was classic!
The rest of the cast was great too; Uma Thurman and John Travolta continuing that chemistry that worked so well in Pulp Fiction. I loved all the music numbers and I absolutely adored all the cameos! I won't give them all away but a few are The Black Eyed Peas, Fred Durst, and Wyclef Jean. And that reminds me, Andre 3000's Dabu was side-splittingly funny! To see what I mean, you'll just have to watch it. Now I don't guarantee that you'll find it as funny as I did but if you like sarcastic, dry, and somewhat slap-stick humor, you'll LOVE it!
Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)
Just Cheap...***spoiler***
OK, so you'd think that with Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt, Piper Perabo, Tom Welling, and Ashton Kutcher, this movie would be half decent. Well, prepare for a shock: it's not all it's cracked up to be. I can take the 12 kid family, I can take the stay at home mom hoping to advance her writing career, and I can even take the oldest daughter and her neurotic, narcissistic boyfriend. What I absolutely cannot stand is the selfishness of the children. Being a family is about sticking together through the bad times and making sacrifices for each other. I understand that the mom needed to pursue her writing career and I commend the father for trying to take care of the kids on his own but, if I'm not mistaken, weren't there two teenagers in the family? They should have been helping out a lot more than they did. They were just spoiled brats who wanted their own way and weren't willing to do anything that didn't benefit their own lives.
I also hated the ending. I normally don't put spoilers in my comments but the ending of this movie is probably what irked me the most about this movie. Instead of the kids apologizing for being brats, it ends with the father and mother giving up their dreams and the kids getting their own way. I mean, I know that when you're a parent, the kids come first but there has to be a limit to that. Especially when the kids were as bratty as these kids were. This movie gets a 5 out of 10, and that's being generous because I really liked the cast. Do yourself a favor, skip this one until it comes on cable.
Lassie (1994)
A True Family Classic
This movie was one of my favorites when I was younger. I am now 21 years old and I still love it and watch it whenever it comes on cable. The original concept of Lassie never really appealed to me, I guess because it was slightly before my time. However, I thought this movie brought the spirit of the original Lassie to kids who never got to experience Lassie when it was at it's best.
The main actor Thomas Guiry, who played the troubled Matt Turner, truly carried this film. He was also quite fortunate to be surrounded by other great actors such as Michelle Williams and Charlie Hofheimer.
I really loved this story because it expressed the true values of family and unconditional love. I recommend this film to families, children, and adults alike. I still love this movie and probably always will. I give it a 9 out of 10.
Harriet the Spy (1996)
A Great Childhood Movie
This movie is so great! I remember seeing it for the first time as a kid. It was one of my favorites. It was back when Michelle Trachtenberg wasn't on my s**t list. Excuse the vulgarity, but there was no other way to say it. I haven't liked anything she's done since and I miss the days of "Harriet the Spy". This movie reminds me of what it was like to be a kid: always fun and carefree. Everything was an adventure and you knew that you and your buddies would be friends forever.
It's a great movie for kids, full of laughter, suspense, and adventure. I also thought Rosie O'Donnell was amazing as well. The role was perfect for her because I'd always seen her as that kind of nurturing mother-figure. And Eartha Kitt???! What a riot! She was amazing, over-the-top, as usual. My favorite scene would have to be the one where she sneaks into Eartha Kitt's house. It's amazingly funny and gives you a good idea of what the rest of the movie will be like.
This one is a must see for families with children. Actually, it's a must see for everyone, because we all need a movie that makes us feel young again and "Harriet the Spy" definitely does that. I give it a 9 out of 10.
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
A Must See!!!
I am a big fan of suspense-thrillers and when I first saw the trailer for this movie, I knew I HAD to see it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see it until it was released on DVD which, luckily for me, was not too long after it's theatrical release. At any rate, I remember that after my very first time watching it I just sat there for a few minutes and didn't say anything. I was so overwhelmed by the message and the visuals in the movie. It was THAT GOOD!
I was very pleasantly surprised by Ashton Kutcher's performance in this movie. Everyone has always seen him as a slap-stick comedy actor and nothing more but he really proved his acting skills with this movie. It was just amazing how he was able to portray such a complex character. More kudos go to Amy Smart for her portrayals of the 4 versions of Kaylie. It takes a very talented actress to pull that off and she did it so well; I definitely believed that they were all different versions of the same person.
I have to mention that while some people criticize the film for it's "chaotic" jumps from scene to scene, they are obviously missing the point. Those jumps and camera effects were part of what made the movie so great. Definitely a movie worth owning and watching over and over. I also have to mention something about the Director's Cut on the DVD. If you haven't already heard by now, there are 3 different endings to the movie, the other two which appear on the DVD. I won't spoil it and say what the endings were but i will encourage you to see all three versions to give you a good idea of the greatness of this film. One of the best movies I've seen recently. It gets a 10 out of 10.
EuroTrip (2004)
I'm Not Quite Sure What to Think... **(possible spoilers)**
I'm a college student currently studying abroad in The Netherlands and many of the people I met here, and have become good friends with, have been talking about "Eurotrip" since we've been here (about 6 weeks). I figured that I should at least see it because they seemed to like it so much. Well, after finally having seen the movie, I'm still not sure whether I liked it or not. I thought that the lead character, Scotty, was very good looking and so was his friend Cooper. I wasn't too keen on Michelle Trachtenberg being a member of the cast. I haven't really liked anything she's done since Nickelodeon's "Harriet the Spy". Aside from that, I think she's one of the only characters that carried the film. I did think the plot was very creative but more should have been done with it. What that is, I'm not quite sure. Still, there were some good moments, like the scene with the "hash" brownies and the robot scene. One problem I had with the jokes in the film was that they were so outlandish, i.e. the scene at the Vatican and the gay guy on the train.
All in all, I have to say that I thought "Eurotrip" had some good points and bad points and the absolute best part, in my opinion, is the hilarious "Scotty Doesn't Know". I think it's worth it just for that scene alone. HOWEVER, I recommend seeing this only after you've been in Europe, mainly because had I not already been in Europe, I'd really believe they were in the places they were in. In reality, most of the scenes in the film take place in Prague. But all that aside, I give this movie a 7 out of 10 (it loses 2 points for the odd pace and 1 point for the outrageousness of some of the jokes).
The Luck of the Irish (2001)
Pretty Good For a Disney Original Movie
I've never been a big fan of Disney Channel Original Movies but after seeing 'Motocrossed' and liking it, I decided to give 'Luck of the Irish' a chance. I wasn't disappointed. While I didn't like it quite as much as 'Motocrossed', it was still a good movie. It has a great lesson for kids: You should be proud of your heritage. Ryan Merriman also did a great job in this film. I have always been a fan of his work and this movie was no different. The other actors were good as well, though some of them had less than perfect Irish accents. The actor who played his best friend (Glenndon Chatman), however, was painful to watch. His acting was stilted and unbelievable. Now, as far as the plot was concerned, I thought it was pretty creative. It held my attention, anyway. I thought some scenes were a little silly and some of the Irish stereotypes were a little over the top, but I'd have to say that all-in-all, the movie did what I expected it to do. I especially like the ending; it was quite touching. But I won't spoil it for you. I recommend this movie for families to teach their children about being proud of their heritage and wanting to learn about their ancestors. I give this movie 7 out of 10.
Motocrossed (2001)
A Surprisingly Good Film
I've never been a big fan of Disney Channel Original Movies, and for good reason as most of them are cheesy meaningless movies made to keep young kids occupied. However, I was very pleasantly surprised when I caught the middle of the movie accidentally one day while flipping channels. After seeing the last half of the movie, I just had to see the beginning so I found out when it was coming on again and watched it again from the very beginning. Upon doing so, I discovered that the movie is actually quite good and I definitely recommend it to those who are interested in motocross and are also into family movies. I liked the girl power aspect as well as the family togetherness; it's quite amazing how the whole family stuck together at the end, and I found it so awesome that Andrea was good at Motocross but could still be a typical girl at the same time. It shows that girls can be good at sports and not look like tomboys. Also, the casting directors should be commended because they picked a fine cast of talented young people. This movie has a good message for the whole family and although the twins in the movie looked almost nothing alike, and Andrea would never be able to pass for Andrew in real life, sticking around for the ending is definitely well worth it. I give this movie 8/10 stars.
King of the Hill (1993)
Such a Sad Movie...
I first saw this movie a few weeks ago on broadcast television and was only watching it, initially, because I was bored on a Saturday afternoon and there was nothing else better on television. After now having seen it, I'm glad I happened upon the film because without it, I would never have seen the immense talent of Jesse Bradford. I'd only ever seen him in two other films: "Bring It On" and "Swimfan". I think he did a fair job in the latter and a pretty good job in the former, however neither gave me the impression that he was a great actor. After seeing "King of the Hill", I now have a newfound respect for Jesse Bradford. Now as far as the film itself goes, I thought it was a great movie but it was incredibly sad and not one I'd recommend watching when you're in a good mood because it will just bring you down. I was very excited to see a young Adrian Brody in the film and, as was expected, he did a phenomenal job in the film as well. I remember watching the movie and being really angry with the father in this movie for leaving his child to starve to death. It was at that moment that I realized I was watching a truly great example of quality film-making. The movie gets a 9 out of 10 (it loses a point for being a little too melodramatic).
