The Sacketts (1979)
Excellent but not quite up to snuff compared to the book
Trying to merge two books into one miniseries I think led to most of the problems. What I found remarkable was how authentic the costumes were and how believable the construction of the town of Purgatory was. Most westerns have the characters running around in their Sunday go to meeting clothes 7 days a week with never a smudge on the clothes or the people. This one was a LOT more true to what I think it would really have been like. I suspect this was from Louis L'Amour input. He is famous for the authentic settings in his books. It is a pity we dont have more westerns of this caliber. Then again it is hard to find an author that does as much good research.
Doom: Annihilation (2019)
Piss poor Doom movie
The only reason I don't give it a 1 is it had a few decent sets. The acting was VERY poor. The weapons were not very well done. As usual for the majority of movies now days all the evil and incompetent people were men and the closest we had to good people were the women. I am so fricking tired of this woke bullcrap. The best I could tell the women were supposed to be better at hand to hand and better marksmen JUST because they were women. Don't get me wrong I LIKE a well done woman lead like Ripley in the Alien movies. The women cast in this movie bore no resemblance to Ripley. Like I said the acting was bad, the writing was bad, and the weapons were bad. The only saving grace was the sets were fairly true to the game.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
Poor writing,
Insanely bad writing. The choreography was lacking. You have to push the "I believe" button WAY too hard. Someone actually had the gall to nominate this movie for equality of the sexes...After making the women invincible killing machines and all the men idiots there to die...I have no problems with well done female leads but this was NOT well done.
Morbius (2022)
Poorly done.
Poorly done from start to finish. The only plus is they made the actor look like Morbius in the comics or close enough. Outside of that the flying was pitiful. No blood shown. I dont think he was ever remotely that fast in the comics. And the scene with his wife rising from the dead? Bad to say the least. Funny how none of the people Milo drained seemed to come back...The scene with him dismantling the equipment of the counterfeiters and putting back together to make a blood research lab so hysterical. Funny how Spider-man never showed up either since Morbius first appeared in the Spider-Man title. #101. When Spider-Man had 6 arms...And I don't ever remember artificial blood being in the comic version. I know I know the movies are never like the comics. But if you are going to adapt a comic to the movies then adapt the comic don't change almost everything and just keep the name...
The Jurassic Games (2018)
The Condemned meets The Running Man
Well neither of the movies I mentioned has Dinosaurs but Running man had explosive collars and The Condemned had 10 convicts fighting to the last survivor. The special effects weren't bad all in all. The terrain looked nothing like I would have expected the Jurassic to look though. And I am pretty sure the Sabertooth came WAY after the Jurassic era. But the movie had its moments.
Bloodsport (1988)
Great movie. Simple but numbers problems.
Ok they overdid it a bit on the backstory. The fight scenes in the movie they are playing to the camera a bit too much. Using moves that are slower and easier to dodge especially some of the slower kicks. But I will give credit where it is due Van Damme was in GREAT shape and toned amazingly well in the movie. The large number of different fighting styles made for a great look on the fights. While Frank Dux may have fought in tournaments and may have won the tournaments. There is no way for him to have done all that is claimed at the end of the movie. We will agree fastest knockout and fastest punch and kick are all possible but it is stated the tournament is once every 5 years. He fought from 1975 to 1980 and retired undefeated. So if its every 5 years he only entered the tourney TWO times. It is shown as single elimination. If you START with 256 fighters you only fight 8 rounds. 256,128,64,32,16,8,4,2 To get 300+ fights in two tourneys that are single elimination you would need more people in the tourney than are present on earth. So either there is a LOT of lying going on or there are tourneys at least a LOT more often than every 5 years or its not even close to single elimination.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Completely different from the comic.
While it was a good movie it had very little to do with Shang Chi Master of Kung Fu from the comics. Outside of the name Shang Chi, his father being evil and one of the villains Razorfist the movie was completely different from the comic character. In the comics his father is Fu Manchu. He does NOT have the 10 rings, the Mandrian does though they are actually finger sized rings. Razorfist has a normal blade in place of his hand not a bloody light saber. Fu Manchu does have an extended life but it it due to a serum he takes. I don't remember Shang Chi having a sister in the 100+ comics I read. At one point he did have an identical twin or maybe it was a clone. So again it WAS a good movie it just ruined it for me that they completely changed the story from the comics.
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Good but problems.
We will skip over the bank robbery and extreme violence and get to the vampire bar.
1st the vampires are SLOW and not much stronger than normal humans.
2nd the vampires bite someone and they die and rise as a vampire in just a few minutes. A few get bit and become vampires with out dying first.
3rd One of the vampires has his head cut off and the rest of his body turns into some kind of hell pig.
At least they aren't immune to sunlight. But as fast as new vampires rise they would have exterminated all life on the planet in a pretty short time. All in all the acting was good, I just have problems with the liberties they took with vampire legends.
Blood Red Sky (2021)
Gee becoming a vamp got easy.
Somehow, vampires now take about 5 seconds to rise and make more vampires. Needless to say the plane full of people had no real chance. No blood exchange. Just you get bit. You die and maybe a minute later you rise as a vampire. Can't expect a lot of survivors with that kind of setup. With this kind of vampire creation, everyone in the world would be vampires in a day or two.
Ape vs. Monster (2021)
Lets just be nice and say it could have been worse.
The capsule was waaaaaaay too small for the size the ape had grown to. Some of the old stock footage used in the movie was pretty horrible. Some of it looked like it was from the 50's or 60's The Russian team just appeared out west. No explanation how they got there. The Russian scientists weren't even watched while they sabotaged the captured ape. The special effects weren't really as bad as I expected. Not that they were GOOD of course. Too many stereotypes. The military general just wanted to kill them all and let God sort them out. The scientist was so soft-hearted she would have never graduated. The alien spaceship once they lost control of the big creatures just turned around and left. I was left with the feeling it could have been a good movie if they had someone that could write a coherent script. The acting was almost as bad as the script sad to say. The Ape vs Gila Monster fight lasted only seconds...
Monster Hunter (2020)
Good special effects.
The effects were good. The fight scenes were good. The idea of the main characters lasting for days and days in a desert with little to no water is silly. The monsters are TOO tough for anyone to survive them. So good effects. Good fights but the idea of people going hand to hand with a fire breathing dragon are pretty whacked. I mean if it is tough enough to shred tanks attacking it with hand held edged weapons is pushing the "I believe" button way too hard.
Bright (2017)
Great overall.
The biggest problem was they tried to jam enough content in for 3 or 4 movies into one movie. It was good even though but would have been better if they werent so rushed. Having orks, elves and humans in modern day city was different. I thought the music used really blew chunks. The special effects were great. The glimpse of a Dragon was suggestive. There were way too many humans willing to die trying to use a magic wand though. I mean 1 in a million chance of it not killing you...
The New Mutants (2020)
And we now have a movie worse than Man-Thing and Howard the Duck.
I wasn't expecting much but this was soooooooooooooo much worse than what I expected. If totally fails as a super-hero movie. It totally fails as a horror movie. It just fails in every way possible. Just for starters Magik was NOT in the New Mutants when the group started it was an Asian girl that could possess people. They weren't originally kidnapped by the all knowing THEM either. This movie has the Hollywood disease, They take a good story and change it just to be changing it for no good reason. At LEAST when Marvel changes stuff in the movies they control they change them to make more sense.
Gravity (2013)
Good by lotta goofs
While the visuals are great and it would be hard to have it more dramatic there are LOTS of reality problems.
1) The astronaut circling the capsule was WAY over the top. First his jet pack doesnt have that length of thrust time. It also doesnt switch directions that smoothly to do a curved path like that.
2) You dont have NEARLY enough satellites to have a chain reaction like that.Space is BIG, Satellite are small.
3) Many of the collisions in the movie first dont damage her space suit and second they make it look like the space station has enough gravity to pull her back in. All those times she jumped...she would have kept going, she wouldnt have dropped back to the station.
4) NONE of the nausea inducing acrobatics caused her to puke. Maybe their drugs ARE that good but I have severe doubts.
5) The fire in the international space station didnt seem to cause ANY smoke.
There are plenty more that is a few just off the top of my head. Great visuals and drama, true to life part pretty bad.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Could have been worse I guess.
This movie makes no real sense. The time loops have been totally shredded at this point in horrible ways. At start of movie a Terminator kills John Conner. So that totally invalidates anything from before...later in the movie the same Terminator tells Sarah Conner that them destroying Skynet frees the terminator because he no longer has a mission. If John was killed who destroyed Skynet? Now a terminator and a protector are sent from the future after someone else. NOT by Skynet but by Legion ANOTHER AI out of control. But THIS AI builds terminators EXACTLY like Skynet's terminators...in fact during the movie one of them rips an arm off of the Skynet built terminator and plugs it into the Legion built terminator. Granted the Legion terminator is able to split into two terminators one like original and one a liquid metal terminator.... That and making the females the lead characters, granted the one from the future has been enhanced into a super soldier... but the two from current time get throw around by the terminator and never get broken bones or any of the obvious stuff. Normal human just CAN'T survive hand to hand fights with terminators... They pretty much broke the movie series beyond repair.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
What a mess.
This has to be the worst zombie movie I have ever seen. I mean it had as good an explanation as any for why we had zombies but for a town with a population of 700+ you saw VERY few of them, PLENTY of zombies though. Hollywood just HAD to show its TDS also. A man in the movie wearing a "Make America White Again" cap. Which of course is red and the character wearing it is a complete dick. This movie flailed in so many directions and wasn't even funny and it sure wasn't good. When you have a main character that says he knows that things will end badly because he read the script you know things have hit rock bottom. I wont try to list all the stupid stuff, if you just GOT to see it, then you can make your own list.
Venom (2018)
Changed things from the comic
While deviating from the comic is not ALWAYS bad in this case they pretty much changed waaaaaaaay too much. And the changes were NOT for the better.
Blade (1998)
Very very good.
I usually dont like it when a movie deviates from the source material. In this case I make an exception. I think Blade the movie is MUCH better than the comicbook Blade. They played fast and loose with laws of physics a few times but then again its not like vampires are exactly true to science. It has all the action and violence and gore you could ask for. And the good guys even win.
The Patriot (1998)
Not horrible but not that good either
The science in this one was pretty bad. Ok skip all the rest and we get to the end. They find a tea from local flowers cures the disease or boosts the immune system enough it doesn't kill you or what ever. I can buy into that. The final scene where they pick a bunch of the flowers and spray them out the door of the helicopter and act like this cures everything is just fricking brain dead. Flowers raining out of the sky does NOT get the healing properties inside people. Gimme a break.
Robin Hood (2010)
Grading on a scale
Ok totally ignore that it is named Robin Hood. Just watch it as a period movie set in old England and it is halfway decent. Because if you don't ignore the title then you have to talk about how it totally shreds the Robin Hood legend into tiny, tiny pieces. If you DO take the name into account it drops to a 1 at best. I mean I like Russell Crowe but this just WASN'T Robin Hood.
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
Where to start on how many ways this was hosed.
1) The timing. It is set in present day earth in a typical small town. The Original Alien movie was set well in the future.
2) The Predator ship crashes and a few alien face huggers get lose. No sign of a n alien queen. So no eggs and no source of more face huggers other than the few shown on the Predator ship.
3) Apparently THESE aliens grow to full size in about 15 minutes.
4) Another Predator is sent from their home world to Earth to clean up. It gets there in less than a day.
5) The Predator has a handy dandy blue fluid that melts bodies away to nothing with a few drops.
6) Later in the movie the never ending supply of face huggers starts producing 3 to 4 aliens per victim vice one each. Of course even 3 or 4 per hugger is NOT enough to explain where all the Aliens came from. The town is crawling with dozens if not hundreds of them.
7) The small town has a Nuclear Power Plant apparently IN the town. We only see a whole TWO employees. The Aliens and the Predator fight. The power plant gets shut down which blacks out the town. Then the power plant is completely ignored for the rest of the movie.
8) The government decides to nuke the town to destroy the infestation.
9) A few of the main characters get out on a chopper. The nuclear explosion does cause the chopper to crash but nobody on the chopper is hurt.
There is much more but that is enough. for one review. Let us just leave it at the movie is god awful and apparently the people that made it NEVER saw any of the other Alien or Predator movies.
Split Second (1992)
Shoot the Monster
It starts saying its set in 2008 and Global Warming has flooded London. Well needless to say one more movie where the global warming cult got it wrong. The movie has a certain charm especially if you like shoot em up movies. Just remember to get a bigger gun when you go hunting the almost indestructible mutant monster.
Under the Dome (2013)
Pointless
Now granted I only watched a couple episodes but there were wayyyyyyyy too many plot holes for my taste.
1. First there is no attempt to dig their way out.
2. There is a fire but the smoke trapped under the dome doesn't kill them all.
3. I saw no attempt to ration food or anything else with the exception of medicine.
4. Basically the writers of this show seemed to do absolutely nothing toward thinking about the problems of being isolated or what should be prioritized.
So while the idea is decent it is horribly carried through by the series.
Code of Honor (2016)
What the hell?
OK, lets see where to start. At the beginning of the movie we are shown S. Seagal on a tall building being a sniper then we see him in a strip club then we see him leaving and pushing a button to blow up the strip club. Later we see him killing a mob boss by shooting him in the head from long range. Toward the end of the movie we see the OTHER guy in most of these places instead of Seagal. Seagal seems to blow himself up with bombs and the other guy gives the stripper's kid his ball glove. So who exactly did what in the movie? I mean the watcher is just left totally confused, you are shown cameo's of both main actors doing exactly the same scenes. This was just a mess.
The Battery (2012)
Bored me to death
Yeah, I know it was made on a shoestring budget but it bored me to tears. One more game of catch in the movie and I would have been ready to kill both characters. For all intents and purposes absolutely nothing happens in the movie except the one guy feeling sorry for himself. While it IS nice to see someone do a movie on the cheap, I really want more story than this one offered.
There are rumors of sequel to this one. I will be absolutely sure to avoid it like the plague.
I want the hour or so of my life I wasted fast forwarding through this one.
