The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Does The Matrix Resurrections live up to the first one?
The first Matrix resonated with the feelings of many of us, weaving together our perception of what's real and a deep understanding of the concept of choice. It had a lot to say and it was brilliantly executed in terms of both storytelling and visual arts.
In contrast, The Matrix Resurrections has nothing new to say. It is almost entirely driven by an uncreative imitation of the storytelling of the first Matrix. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss did their best, but nothing could save an artistically uninspired failed attempt of resurrecting a legend.
Lana Wachowski should have passed on this.
Si no t'hagués conegut (2018)
If you are into Sci-fi shows that involve time travelling or romantic stories, this series might be worth watching.
The premise of the first episode offers a lot of potential: Eduard is a man who loses everything and he wants to cope as best as he can with both his sense of guilt and loss, by looking for a Universe where his life or that of his family do not end in a tragedy due to a car accident.
The actors made a remarkable job to make this story believable. They are enjoyable and they gave nothing for granted while interpreting their role. Also the photography deserves a big thumbs up: I paused more than once in order to observe the scene and appreciate how beautiful it was.
However, the main problems of this "Si no t'hagués conegut" concern three aspects: the storytelling, the character development, and the makeup artists. In many episodes, the storytelling is lacking the surprise element, the same scenes are shown over and over again, getting repetitive and in some cases quite boring. While watching each episode, you discover almost nothing new regarding the main character, except the fact that he is amazingly dumb (why?) and extremely unlucky with car accidents in any possible universe. The writer was too focused on the development of the character of the wife, forgetting who mattered the most: the unnecessarily dumb and poor Eduard. The third problem is the poor job done by the makeup artists. Eduard looks too old in the past while his wife looks too young in the present. This was a quick-win and they strongly underestimated the importance of this aspect.
Despite the (big) problems above, I still gave a 7 to this show, mostly thanks to the important effort and work made by the actors.
