Don't Look Up (2021)
Funny and scary at the same time.
I loved it. It was smart, funny and I'm convinced that's exactly how things would go if this would happen in reality. And, to paraphrase Murray from Stranger Things, for people to accept serious information, you need to make it more digestible. This movie is making such a valid commentary on the world we live in today, but it packages it in a layer of comedy so that people can assimilate it. Like John Oliver does with Last Week Tonight. I started this movie thinking it will be a silly parody, but ended up loving it. Performance of the actors is obviously great, since it has so many great actors in.
Invasion (2021)
Annoying characters
Story is blah. Nothing new, nothing interesting. But what's offensive about this series is the characters. There're all so dislikable. The main characters that you're supposed to root for are the most annoying and they keep doing irrational things. I'm on episode 6, but I think I'll give it up, every episode annoys me with its absurdity.
The Reckoning (2020)
They didn't even try
This move takes place in 1665 England, during the Great Plague. Yet the main female character has perfectly voluminous waved hair with a modern hair curler that you could wear going out in 2021. She also has perfect makeup with perfectly groomed brows, eyeshadow and is obviously wearing lipstick. She looks like a modern woman in cosplay. Most of the costumes don't look like 1665, they look like 1500's costumes, the villain looks like Henry the VIII. The script and plot are cheesy and predictable and the whole movie is just boring.
Crime Stories: India Detectives (2021)
Mirroring human rights in India
This documentary shocked me in terms of how police talk to suspects and talk about sex workers.
Almost all interrogations include physical threats. The people they interrogate, most of them innocent, are clearly terrified by police. If this is how police behave in front of the cameras, I hate to imagine how they behave when they are not filmed.
Also, that part when the police woman says she is disgusted by sex workers and wouldn't even touch them and how police men think sex workers destroy men's lives. Wow. Talk about a chauvinistic, sexist mentality.
This documentary is sadly a mirror on how backwards India is on human rights and women's rights.
Im giving it 3 stars because of its realism.
Beckett (2021)
Awful
I love Denzel Washington. His son can't act to save his life. This is a blatant case of nepotism. The script, the direction, all the Greek villagers speaking fluent English. So bad, I can't even believe it. What was Alicia Vikander thinking, she can do so much better.
Rebecca (2020)
Unnecessary
There should be a rule, don't remake a great classic movie if you have nothing new or interesting to add to it. This looked like the Hallmark version of Hitchcock's classic film noir. Lilly James is overacting the shy, inexperienced character, she walks like Forrest Gump in some scenes, for example where she's following Rebecca's ghost at the party. She also pouts all the time. Armie Hammer has the intensity of a carrot, he's too vanilla for the role. His suits are horrible, badly tailored, the mustard suit in the beginning is an eye sore. Kristin Scott Thomas as Mrs Danvers is the only saving grace of this movie. And finally, the cinematography is bad. It's like somebody wanted to make a rom com and changed their mind in the last minute. Those happy, ultra saturated colors don't fit the mood of a dark gothic romance novel in the least.
Venom (2018)
Loved the movie!
I wonder if the bad reviews are meant to sabotage the movie. It's on Netflix, if you have a Netflix subscription, watch it, you have nothing to lose. It's smart, fun, Tom Hardy is ridiculously talented. If you liked Dead Pool, you're also gonna love this one.
Searching (2018)
Very engaging movie
I haven't been so engaged in a long time. Incredibly well paced and the computer screens filming technique made it so much more realistic and unsettling. You really felt as lost as the father when he was trying to find out what happened to his daughter, because that's what we would all do if God forbid we were in this situation. I also didn't see the plot twist coming, so points for that too. The ending wasn't the most realistic, but I was okay with that. Very well done and acted movie.
