Beyond Paradise (2023)
Boring. Poorly filmed.
Really boring. Did not care about any of the characters. The way it is filmed and edited is annoying. Think old style green screen with some kind of AI. There are scenes that are reminiscent of the old chroma key. Where the camera is focused on the characters and the background is blurred out. For example there is a scene where the characters are chatting around a table and the background is blurred out. Patronising to the viewer. Did not get why they filmed in Devon using this weird style. Disappointing. I failed to be able to concentrate due to the filming style. Maybe some people will like it. Not for me. The BBC should do better.
And Just Like That... (2021)
Entertaining!
I was expecting to be disappointed due to the absence of Samantha and the mess of SATC 2. Like life people die, friends drift, priorities change and children grow up. This series reflects the reality of ageing whilst navigating today's 'woke' society. This is done with grace and humour. A must watch for fans of the original show. Don't let the absence of the fabulous Samantha to put you off. The door is left open if she wants to rejoin. Samantha is not dead yet!
The Hustle (2019)
Hilarious Fun Comedy Movie
A modern version of 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'. Wilson and Hathaway have proved themselves great comedy actors. The writing is fabulous and the laughs are many. One of my favourite parts is when 'Wilson' and 'Hathaway con a Texas millionaire under the ruse of British royalty. I will not ruin the review by quoting any lines. The costumes are fabulous and the settings are glamorous. One fails to understand the negative reviews. I can only assume these people have had a sense of humour bypass! My whole family loves this movie and have watched it many times. I hope Chris Addison is working on a sequel. A great tribute to the original.
Beyond the Reef (1979)
A movie Before It's Time
This movie dealt with environmental issues before it's time. Don't let the classic romantic plot put you off. There are some great lines at the start of the movie. It follows two girls on a visit to Bora Bora. The main character is going back to her homeland and she brings her American friend. The underlying theme is the beginnings of mass tourism in an unspoilt lagoon. The cinematography is amazing and there are some really beautiful scenes. Lots involving a shark and humans before the days of CGI. Don't let the background music (that could seem dated to some), put you off watching a film with superb acting and great respect to the people and culture of Bora Bora. A pleasant surprise.
The Hangover (2009)
Clichéd Jokes
I watched ' The Hangover' today after hearing recomendations from friends. Twenty minutes into the film I couldn't understand why I wasn't laughing. I am no prude and have found comedies such as 'Knocked Up' hilarious. However the clichéd storyline and frat house 'jokes' took it's toll on me. I found the humour that they used with the baby crossed a line. It is fine to use vulgar humour if the jokes are intelligent and well thought out. The makers of South Park posses this skill, unfortunately the makers of 'The Hangover' lacked the skills to do this. Instead relying on clichéd frat boy humour appealing to the lowest common denominator.
