Rhythm (2000)
One of the best Tamil movies ever made!
This movie is a classic; one of the best movies you'll ever see. It has a simple and modest storyline, a well scripted screenplay, characters that you can easily relate to, subtle romance, beautiful settings both in Ooty and in Mumbai, a beautiful and haunting background music score that brings out your emotions even if minor flaws in acting fail to do so. Arjun is very mature - one of his best displays of acting, Meena looks stunning as a widow who develops feelings for another widower but hides her feelings fearing the social stigma against widow remarriage, Jothika and Ramesh Arvind play their roles to the T. Lakshmi could not have done more justice to the role of a staunch and orthodox Iyengar mother-in-law who disowns her son and later feels guilt and sympathy towards her daughter-in-law after having lost her son.
Easily the most beautiful family entertainer (in tamil) of the past decade!
9/10
Aasai (1995)
You've got to sing praises on Vasanth! He is such a gem!
While watching the movie, if you did not know who the director was or if you missed the title credits of the movie, I bet you would have considered this a Mani Ratnam product. After having given movies like Keladi Kanmani, Aasai, Nerukku Ner, Appu and Rhythm, I wonder what more Vasanth needs to do to gain recognition. Undoubtedly, he is one of the few very best directors Tamil Cinema has ever produced. The subjects that he touches upon are so thematic and meaningful to the society. He is such a gem and yet not a single national honour for him? National honour is a different issue. At least, he must be recognised in Tamil Cinema. When people name the best directors of Tamil cinema, the names that come out are K.Balachander, Mani Ratnam, Bharathi raja, Balu Mahendra. Vasanth is easily in their league with such high quality film making to his credit.
Oh, as for the movie, this is seriously a must watch. This movie was actually a flop at the box office which goes to show the kind of dumb audience we have for Tamil Cinema. Only uncouth people will not like this movie!
A must watch classic! 9.4/10
What's Your Raashee? (2009)
I refused to believe that this movie would be bad....until I watched it...
You can't believe that this movie came from a director who was rising the standard of Indian Cinema with every movie that he made. Lagaan was right on top...Swades got even better...Jodhaa Akbar was epic! Now, Gowariker is probably back to his pre-Lagaan days with this movie that bores u to the core. The major errors in the movie are - 1. Casting Harman Baweja. He is a ridiculous actor, can't even act like he is flirting (don't know how he dated Priyanka Chopra). And his acting is almost always annoying and unacceptable.
2. All the 12 roles played by Priyanka Chopra had very less screen time and it was definitely not enough for the audience to absorb. So every time Harman meets a girl of a Raashee, you forget the name and character of the girl of the previous Raashee. In the climax, when Harman says Chandrika or Hansaa, you would keep scratching your head to figure out which girl it is and what her raashee is.
3. Music. I am very very sure that the music made a lot of difference, negatively for this movie though. Ashutosh should have just waited for Rahman to get back after Slumdog Millionaire. This new comer is not bad but Rahman could have at least made the movie look a little better. More often than not, Rahman's music covers up poor acting display or poor storyline(for eg- u don't really find a scene romantic because of the acting. Rahman's bgm can make u feel romance in the scene)
4. Songs - Too many songs. a song each for each raashee...ashutosh should have done away with the songs and given more screen time for each of the 12 characters of Priyanka Chopra.
To put in short, you won't believe even in your funniest dreams that this movie was made by the director of Lagaan, Swades and Jodhaa Akbar.
Aayirathil Oruvan (2010)
Very bad, horrible cinema
I wish I could give it less than 1 on 10. This movie is disgusting to say the least. Right from the screenplay to the post production stuff like graphics and special effects, everything is absolutely poor. Selvaraghavan , who built himself good reputation with romantic movies like 7/G Rainbow colony and Adavari Maatalakku Arthalu Verule and dark movies like Pudhupetai and Kadhal Kondein just loses it all with this movie. You definitely don't expect a movie which was in the making for over 2 years to be this bad! Selvaraghavan challenged that if someone could prove that Aayirathil Oruvan was inspired/copied from another movie, he would quit directing movies. Well, if Aayirathil Oruvan is going to be the kind of movies he is going to make in the future, then he might as well quit cinema right now. Accepting his challenge, I can prove that this movie was copied from not just one other but at least 3- 4 other Hollywood films (The Mummy, Mackenna's Gold, Apocalypto, Gladiator to name a few) The screenplay is poor in the first half and gets worse and worse progressively with every scene in the 2nd half of the movie. The movie beats logic completely. I would have bought the idea of time travel (which was what the movie was initially said to be based on) to this uninteresting idea where the writer wants us to believe that Cholas lived as cannibals feeding on each other in a far off land for 1000 years completely unaffected by the external world. One particularly funny scene (which was obviously not intended to be funny) was that Reema Sen, a lady from the Paandiya clan converses with the Chola King Parthiban in ancient Tamil but suddenly starts singing in Telugu. And graphics; this movie scores the all time low in the special effects department. Having spent so much money on unnecessary and badly choreographed war scenes, the producer could have forced the director to give better special effects by chipping in a little more money, at least to make serious scenes look serious and not funny or disgusting. Worst graphics you'll ever see. And after giving the worst movie in ages, Selvaraghavan actually had the audacity to call James Cameron's Avatar meaningless and devoid of a plot. Avatar is a zillion times better than this crap that Selvaraghavan has given.
GV Prakash's soundtrack is impressive and it gives u a feel of the movie. It was definitely an important element that created expectations before the movie was released. However, Selvaraghavan fails to utilize the best song of the album "Indha Paadhai" sung by Prakash himself.
This movie is bad. Very bad. Very Very bad.
