Batoru rowaiaru (2000)
I liked it.
I really enjoyed this film. I found it suspenseful, and I found the characters interesting (at least the ones that the film focused on). However, the two film assassins, or the students who were actually enjoying it, were the characters that made the film. The main characters were also interesting. Especially a young man named Kowada, who actually won the Battle Royale in the past. I also particularly enjoyed the last ten minutes of the film.
I also really liked the heavy violence throughout the film. In a film that is mainly about people being killed, the violence allows the film to have a unique style, and, without the violence, the film would have felt fairly bland.
Despite my praise, I do have one issue with the film, and this is the fact that the film, in my opinion, tries to become more than just a film about killing people but ends up falling short. There are several scenes in the film that dive into what the characters are thinking, as well as many flashbacks. I thought towards the beginning that this film was going to be a social commentary of sorts about the human condition. However, it simply continued to be a film about survival. Now let me say that I would have been fine with a film about survival, if that was all that the film presented. However, I feel like the film was attempting to be more, and it fell short.
With that being said, I still enjoyed the film. I found it to be exciting and simply a fun time watching a movie. If violence isn't your cup of tea, then I would avoid this film. However, if you have no issue with violence, then you will have a great time with this movie, especially if you enjoy Quentin Tarantino films.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Overrated.
This is not a bad film. But it is not the film people are describing. The Hobbit is a children's book of approximately 300 pages. Each of the three LOTR books are a good deal longer than the Hobbit, but they only got a single film apiece...while The Hobbit gets three. You can already tell what the film's primary issue will be, and it is: pacing. And that is the film's major issue. Some scenes are dragged out to ridiculous extents. And, while LOTR films were very long, there was NEVER any filler in them. Every single thing that occurred in those films was important for the continuation of the plot (at least in the theatrical versions). But there is soooo much filler in The Hobbit that it is ridiculous! The film's primary antagonist was not even in the book! And that is just one of the many, many filler scenes in the film, that I have no time explaining here.
The film also suffers from a lack of a consistent tone. One scene can be as dark as LOTR, and the very next will have a wizard riding a sled of bunnies. A scene as ridiculous as this does not belong in a film like The Hobbit. First off, because it was NEVER IN THE BOOK, and second because it disengages you from the film, because it completely breaks from the tone of the previous scenes, and because the wizard with the bunnies does absolutely nothing to advance the story, and looks like it belongs in another film.
And don't say that The Hobbit is a children's book, and this is why there are some childish moments in the film. I would buy that, except the film goes out of its way to connect itself to the LOTR trilogy, and when it tries to do so, one can not help but to compare it to the LOTR films. If this was made as a standalone film, I would be able to look past it inconsistencies. However, I simply can not do that. And keep in mind, I only gave you a few examples of what I am talking about as far as the filler and random, unimportant scenes in the movie. Literally about half of the movie did not need to exist, and is simply there so that three movies can be made, so the studios can make more money.
The Hobbit should have been two films. I believe that they could have simply made one, but I think two films would have been fine as well. I will not discuss the visuals here, but I will say that they are decent, but I honestly prefer LOTR visuals to Hobbit's. Including Gollum.
Overall, The Hobbit was a decent film, but suffered a good bit from inconsistencies and filler that is clearly there for filler. I love LOTR, but i simply found the Hobbit okay. I will give it a 6 because there were certain things that did work, and everything that did came from the original novel.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
One of the Greatest Films of All Time.
And I truly mean that. When I first saw this film, I was blown away. With superb acting, superb story, perfect emotion and tone, and an incredible twist ending that still amazes me, this film is completely and utterly perfect. The film speaks of hope, and the film's two main characters debate throughout the movie about it. One character believes that, in prison, hope is dangerous, and that it should not be used because it will simply make life tougher. Another character believes that hope is needed, because it helps you to keep pushing for a better tomorrow when one does not appear to be in sight.
While very engaging and immensely entertaining, this film would not be held to such high regards if not for the twist ending, which is one of the greatest movie endings of all time, in my opinion. If the ending is merely average, this film would simply be considered good, possibly great, but not the masterpiece that it is today. And, watching it repeatedly makes the film even better, because experiencing the events that occur within the story makes the ending even greater.
I can't speak for everybody, but this is a film that I can watch over and over again, and love it more each time I watch it. And, while I simply talked about the ending this entire review, that is not all that makes this film incredible. However, I will not waste any more of your time talking about how wonderful this film is. And please do not waste any of your own time. Find a way to see this movie as ASAP. It will be time well spent, and you will certainly see it multiple more times.
