John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Completely lost the plot....
I was already rolling my eyes a few times during chapter 3 of John Wick and couldn't believe what I was seeing at the end, after the unreal fall where his back was using iron beams as cushion to slow down to safely land his face on the asphalt below. I thought to myself that there is no way they can top this and boy oh boy they did. This time he straight up used the asphalt as a cushion....
Let's face it, we know the real reason there were 3 sequels after the first movie (money). They figured out there is an audience (money) for one man army movies so they decided to make 3 more with less and less plot the more the story progressed (money), just senseless violence and progressively crazier scenarios who are making even the most tolerant people roll their eyes.
But I still watched them all you would say and you would be right. What I enjoyed in the first 2 movies was the great choreography during the fights and the camera work which elevates them to a whole different level compared to other similar movies. Then there was the 3rd movie which still had great choreography but it felt like they stopped taking it seriously with scenes where the enemies were very conveniently giving time to John to recover or straight up not killing him cause they wanted to fight him some more.... Then there is the fourth one which is just a parody of itself... The choreography is using exaggerating moves, the enemies wait for John to kill the men he is fighting before they attack and they are running towards him while aiming their guns so he can kill them easier instead of shooting right away from a safe distance... Not to mention scenes that I straight up said "oh, no way he lived through this" but then he just walked it off...
Now for the good which made me give a 5 star rating instead of a 2 star one. Keanu is not a very good actor in my opinion. It always feels to me like he is just reading his lines and his performance is flat in this and every other movie he played. But when it comes to fight scenes he is on a whole different level. You can feel how much time and effort he put to gain the skills necessary to perform these scenes and that's why I always enjoy his films no matter how bad the plot or how flat his performance is. Then there is a long, one shot scene that was shot from above with so much going on that I was just amazed! The amount of work that was needed to time everything perfectly into this one shot must have been insane.
Overall it's a 3 hour film of senseless killing, unrealistic scenarios and a plot that has strayed so much from the first film that it feels like a different movie all together.
The Batman (2022)
The slow motion emo Batman
Let me be clear about one thing; I have no problem with 3 hour movies nor how dark the theme of a comic book movie is. This is especially true with Batman movies since it's all about dark stories. This is exactly why I enjoy DC comics and movies in a different way than Marvel's which have become more about silly jokes than serious stories.
With that out of the way, the main reasons I rated this movie so low were the bad casting, the cheesy romance, Batman's emo design and the slow, very slow pacing of everything.
First of all, Pattinson didn't fit the role. The whole Emo vibe of Batman/Bruce just didn't feel right and made Batman less threatening as a character. Also the previous actors put the effort to bulk up for the role so they can look like someone who can take on several people at once.
Falcone also didn't feel right. The character is based on godfather and I certainly don't get any "Italian Mafia" vibes from Turturro. The rest of the cast is just OK, I guess we can never have the perfect casting like in Nolan's Batman.
The romance between Batman and Catwoman felt completely unnecessary and badly written. Catwoman is portrayed as a lesbian who lost her partner and immediately started flirting and kissing Batman after a couple of encounters with him....
Finally, like I said above, I don't have any issues with long movies but this is not a long movie, it's a stretched movie. Batman is moving so slowly during every scene except the couple of actions scenes. Walks slowly even while he is getting shot, grabs things slowly and combined with the relaxing romantic music throughout the film I was feeling sleepy all the time.
What I really liked about it was the dark atmosphere and color filter palette they used throughout the movie and the different approach which was more about mystery solving than action packed scenes which shows the detective side of Batman. Having said that, I would have liked to see Batman putting more effort into solving the mystery and not figuring out everything instantly. Also some real consequences when bombs explode in your face or during high speed crashes would be nice... Batman is not Superman...
I really don't get how this movie has such a high rating. For me it's a 5.5 or a generous 6 but certainly not a 7.8 star movie!
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
What a joke...
What the hell did I just watch....
You might think the one star rating is too harsh, maybe 4 or 5 stars would be more reasonable If I was being very, VERY generous but I have had it with marvel releasing one mediocre film after another....
This is not a serious movie series anymore about the character development of a superhero/god who lost everything and still managed to get through and become Kinder and more mature. This just became a movie about a superhero who finally snapped and decided to act as a complete idiot from now on... What a great way to destroy years of character development.
The writing is just lazy and the director made an excellent work of transforming it into a parody movie of itself. Actually, that was my father's first questions after watching the first 10 minutes of this movie, "Is that a Thor parody?"
Cristian Bale is great, as always, and I am saddened that he had to stain his filmography with this movie.
I could go on and on about all the things wrong with this movie but I have already wasted 2 hours of my life watching it and don't want to waste any more time on it. I DO NOT recommend this movie to anyone.
One Piece Film: Red (2022)
What a mess....
I was really looking forward to a Shanks movie and when One Piece Red was announce I was really excited to watch it! Unfortunately it was really disappointing and did not live up to the hype in any way.
I want to make one thing clear, I have nothing against the musical approach of this movie, the songs are actually really good! My main issues are how much an already weak story was rushed just so they can include as many one piece characters as possible and, because of the inclusion of all those characters, the mess that happened later in the movie where they tried to show off every single attack of all those characters.
Uta the "daughter" of Shanks causes an incident to a music nation and in order to protect her feelings Shanks takes the blame, abandons her there which causes here to hate him and pirates in general. She feels so much anger and hate towards them and pirates in general that she creates a virtual world with her powers to kidnap and keep safe thousands of people. We only find out towards the end that she already knew what really happened from a video snail which doesn't makes sense at all considering how much hate she felt towards the Shanks pirates during the whole movie....
Shanks appeared everywhere in the trailers but I guess it was a classic marketing scam to get you to think it's a movie about shanks since he only appeared towards the end and boy what a disappointment... Seeing his face all blooded after ordinary people in the audience punched him was a shock of disbelief. Then during his fight scene you don't feel like he is as strong as he is being hyped to be in the manga. Only his haki moment shows that he is on a different level.
This movie also masters a trend that has started with the previous two movies and after only a few minutes in, there are fights happening all over the place... The future-sight master, fifth emperor Luffy is casually taken out by two buckets of salt water thrown at him by ordinary people which makes me wonder why they didn't try this on Kaido and finish the Wano arc after a few chapters.
Meanwhile Luffy apparently forgets how to use Haki until the last few minutes of the movie but god Ussop casually uses future-sight. During the last attack something different is happening with Luffy (Manga readers you know what I mean) which shouldn't be possible according to the explanation in the manga unless certain parameters where met.
The navy is simply there for decoration... They used all their power against whitebeard, but for Shanks, 30 ships and 2 admirals should do. I guess the 3rd admiral, the CP0 and the rest 70 ships were too busy for a world class threat.
The rest was just plain old copy/paste moments/character quotes from the anime, such as the Kizaru - Beckman situation or Fujitora's exact same quotes etc. Etc. Which are simply boring and bring nothing to the table. The animation apart from a few moments felt subpar and there were many times I thought to myself that there are anime episodes with much better animation overall...
Watch this movie if you have nothing else to watch, but I simply cannot recommend it. This is a very generous 4 for the soundtrack and some visuals I liked but I cannot rate it more than that. One Piece has standards, especially when it comes to captivating stories, it's not about mindless brawls and this movie misses the point entirely.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
What a waste of great talents!
Marvel proves once again that no matter how big of a studio you are, or how big your budget is, If you care only about cash grabs and increasing your streaming library without caring about quality you can still fail big time. That is exactly what happened with She-Hulk.
I started watching it with my expectations set as low as possible because of all the memes I have seen about this series. You see, I still wanted to give it a chance, but I was still disappointed. What I felt watching this series was that the writers simply didn't care at all, especially after experience that fiasco of an ending.
This is really frustrating since there are not many female superhero movies/series and the same trend continues. The heroine gets powers but can control them perfectly right away with the absolutely minimal amount of effort. What kind of message does that send when you see such great character development through hardship and great effort in male hero movies. Why do the writers always feel like the only way to make a female hero stand out is by bringing down male heroes??
As always, they tried their classic marketing strategy of adding other successful mcu heroes to balance their bad writing, which is even more disrespectful to the protagonist heroine, and even that couldn't salvage this series...
I simply have no words and I just feel sorry about the failure of this series cause great talents played in it and it's just not fair treating them like this.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
My expectations were low but was still disappointed
No matter how many billion of dollars you throw for a movie/series, no matter how good your CGI is, if you don't respect your target audience and above all the man who created the lord of the rings universe you are bound to fail.
I never understood how directors cannot succeed when they are working with a masterpiece script? If you want to show your vision to the world then simply direct an original movie. When you choose to direct someone else's vision then respect them enough to at least stick to the script.
The CGI alone is good but if the casting, acting and overall direction of a series is not there to support it then it's a good looking failure. I am giving it one star because this is a series based on one of the best trilogies of all time and it is clear that it was done without respect to the original material.
The Game Changers (2018)
The best way to tell a believable lie is to sprinkle some truth into it...
This is a documentary about athletes who have lived on junk food and meats their entire life and suddenly they discovered that you can eat vegetables too and - surprise surprise - they are healthy! and as a result they came to the conclusion that animal products are unhealthy?!?!? Not a very scientific method if you ask me.
They occasionally add some truth which are things anyone with basic nutritional knowledge already knows. Adding vegetables in our diet, improving the quality of the foods we eat while reducing meats to reasonable amounts (Not a 500gr steak for breakfast, lunch and dinner like their test subjects!!!) and stop eating fast foods will, without a doubt, improve your quality of life and your performance.
They argue that since plant eating animals can meet their protein requirements just by eating plants then so can we, since unlike carnivore animals our gut is longer. They failed to mention that the majority of the gut bacteria in herbivore animals is located at the beginning of their gut, unlike our gut, and a plant diet helps them digest the bacteria and get their protein from them.
They criticize the tobacco and fast food industries for promoting their unhealthy products using athletes and doctors to market them while they are using athletes and doctors themselves to promote the vegan diet as the only way to a healthy lifestyle.
These are only a few examples of everything that is wrong with this documentary. They haven't mentioned any of the accomplished athletes that eat proper diets which include animal products and keeps the argument one sided from the beginning to the end. Any documentary that is so biased should not be taken seriously.
The Punisher (2017)
Where was Jon Bernthal hidden all this time??
The Punisher as a concept is not really my cup of tea so I started watching this series quite a while after the season 2 came out, just because I didn't have anything else to watch, and boy oh boy I got hooked after just one episode.
It's an action filled series that doesn't just tell the story of The Punisher but focuses on other people around him too, adding quite a few different points of view in the story. For me, there is not one protagonist in this series but many and a clear message of the damage war and greed can cause.
What's so amazing about this series is not just the plot and the direction though but the unbelievable performance of the actors in it with Jon Bernthal at the top, owning his role!!!
So many great talents in this series! Just... Well Done!
Highly recommended!
The Mandalorian (2019)
Finally, this is an actual star wars adventure!
Disney nailed this one! I started watching the first episode with my expectations set to 0 due to the past Star Wars atrocities but to my surprise I got hooked!
I never though the story of the mandalorian could be interesting to begin with but I loved the way they filmed and directed it! They shaped it into an amazing classic star wars adventure, without any feminist references and propaganda which completely ruined the last 2 movies!
I truly wish the rest of the episodes are as great as the first one!
Keep it up!
Legends of Tomorrow: The Good, the Bad and the Cuddly (2018)
No words....
I have one thing to say... The writers must get really high every time they start writing an episode of legends of tomorrow... I feel sorry for the actors who are involved in this crap... And this is all the effort I am going to put in my review which is still more than the effort the writers put when writing episodes for this show.
The Flash: Duet (2017)
This episode was so bad I had to write a review
I have watched countless series but I have never written a review about a bad episode simply because I think to myself "meh... It's just an episode out of 10+, it's not a movie...", but after watching this flash episode I felt the need to write a review.
In general I prefer Marvel's series, not because I am a fanboy, but simply because I think they are much better in every way. There is just way too much drama, cliché and low quality writing in DC's series (apart from Gotham which I always enjoy watching).
The beginning of the Flash series was good and there were moments when I caught myself looking forward to the next episode because I wanted to see how the plot will develop... Well that's not the case anymore... DC tries to compensate for their bad writers with over romanticizing relationships, relationship drama and gay couples (which of course I don't have a problem with, but it feels like they are there to attract another group of people in their audience). When I watch their series I feel like they forcefully trying to attract new viewers by including all the cliché things you see in garbage soap-operas.
The latest Flash episode was the the icing on the cake... I literally felt bad for the actors... What kind of a moron writer writes this kind of "story" for their episode and think to themselves "Yeah, that looks good, comic fans will like this story!" and what kind of an awful director approves it...
That's why you will always stay 10 steps back DC, because you are not taking this seriously... We want to see real superheroes overcoming real struggles and not overcome their relationship drama or spend the whole season feeling guilty about everything... We get it... Love is everything... If you like it so much make a series about it but stop forcing it down our throat when all we want is to watch a real hero/superhero series. I don't want to watch 40min relationship drama episodes! There are already plenty of bad series like these for me to watch if I want to.
P.S. Keep supergirl out of the flash/arrow universe... The series is bad enough on it's own, no need to pollute your other series, which still have a chance, with it...
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
Disappointed!
I haven't read the Hobbit but still felt like the movie was lacking. Where do I start? From the cheesiest love story ever? or the forced "funny moments" that lasted more than the actual battles.
Random stuff was happening all the time without explanation. Oversize goats and worms no character development, nothing. Later I learned that the hobbit is 300 pages long, seriously? You make 3 two hour movies out of 300 pages and can't find some time to add some important information? 100% Disappointed, do not watch if you are a fan. I will have to re-watch the whole LOTR trilogy to feel any better. Why is it so difficult for the directors to follow the book nowadays?
