The Last of Us (2023)
Well adapted game to show with lots of drama
Oh man where to start with this show. I think you all agree. It's well adapted and the casting a solid. The show is sad so get ready. Just like the game in the world where no one is safe This is almost as believable as it gets. Ramsey and Pascal, her about the best you could ever see duo in a show. 9/10 acting and writing and a 10/10 for cinematography, it's the best out there right now in terms of episodes. Let's see more but I believe they will smash the records in terms of views and watches. Love this show and would recommend to anybody even those who have not played the video game. I have played the video game and I know the way this goes but following the story here and seeing the way that they're playing this out is really really entertaining. I love it. I love it. I love it.
A Few Good Men (1992)
The classic 90s slow burn with excellent acting as the centerpiece
I love this movie every time it comes on her I watch it. I think this as well written, and well directed.
This is a slow burn indeed, and as expected, Tom Cruise comes from the lackadaisical. I don't know what I'm doing character to becoming the I figured everything out guy. That's okay Demi Moore is amazing but the star of the show is Jack Nicholson boy o boy is this one of his best movies ever. This may be the best last 25 minutes of a movie you could ever watch is quintessential 90s but at the same time ahead of its time. Bacon is great as usual.
At the end of the day of course this is not how the court really works in the military, but gives a sense of justice to the soldiers that don't normally get justice when it means they lose their life outside of actual combat. The military is ever present in this movie and it is done with respect to all sides. I feel I like this movie it makes you feel good about humanity and a movie that does that is usually one that I will come back to.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Brutal war led by nonchalant leadership
Imagine a war where even the good and the bad die.
Imagine all of your friends are dead and you are trying to survive in a condition. That is so horrible. The film takes us to that place and it is not happy and not fun but it's reality of what these poor people had to go through. Infantry wave after infantry wave massacre for no reason other than logistics in the world back then and even now why would the sacrific of life be worth this? I have a movie, so sad, but very well acted and the actionsl; solid 9 out of 10 for me. World war 1 was the most sad and destructive human war ever. May mankind never experience that type if suffering ever again!!!
Axis or Allie's apart, you cannot put millions of men head to head, expect one of them to win in a situation like that, the only people that lose the men.
Somebody Feed Phil (2018)
This is food for my soul, I love Phil
This is the guilty pleasure show for my wife and me. We just love it. I will say season 1-2 we were thinking this guy is so goofy. He can't be real. Well that opinion has changed. What a nerdy yet endearing man. He literally can't speak a lick of any other language, often knows nothing of the culture or food, and can't really cook for a damn. But he's a man of the people. Can you imagine a more positive person to travel with, or someone so encouraging and upbeat about life I general.
Phil knows I think about every 90s celebrity you could. Having co-wrote and produced everyone loves Raymond he doesn't need to work. Looked up his net worth and it's high, but man does he give off normal guy vibes. The places he goes are sometimes very explored and sometimes not but he always brings a fresh perspective. He is funny and adds a comedy vibe via a video chat from a celeb or his dear parents. With grace and a lack of style but in his own style he shows us how great food and culture can be for people like us that don't come from a cooking background or have hours of tedious research to drop in the moment.
Phil you make our nights when your show comes out we always look forward to it. This is and will be one of my absolute guilty pleasures you're so amazing and a great person truly I can tell. Keep doing this show as long as you can we love you!!! Feed this guy forever please.
The Bear (2022)
Wow this was intense in a good way. Not a comedy folks.
As said if you think comedy is pure stressful situations then laugh away. I normally sweated for each episode lol. My wife was like "stop holding onto the sheets" and I was not even noticing I was doing that. It's intense. Kitchens are gnarly I have a new found respect. Good acting and solid writing. Man does the cousin bug he's so good bc you know he's acting but he is irritable that it's realistic. We all know a family member like that I think.
The cooking part is cool they really dive into how a kitchen runs and how recipes are constructed. The different cooks and parts of a kitchen are explored and honestly I never knew it ran that way so that was eye opening. Chi is a great city this offers a different perspective I think than what most might think. Super stressful, but so titillating. I'm excited to season 2 big time.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Upon Watch number 7 this movie and the nuances grow on me
So sa solace in theaters. We liked it, but it was really fast paced at times, and a little slow at other times. The cast is great DiCaprio stellar Brad Pitt stellar. But I don't think we really realized how good this movie is until you watch it a few times, because there are subtle little lines that are hard to mess, if you pay attention but first go around or two he missed them and once you watch a few times boy is it worth catching those little lines this movie is great it captures probably what it felt like to be in movies at this time and it definitely avoids a catastrophic ending that we all know really happened but that's fun it makes it feel better and what really happened and gives us a little help maybe. Anyway, the second have a smoothie is probably some of the best Tarantino written content you could ever imagine when hippies get smoked I mean that's the best. Brad Pitt, probably deserved and Oscar for this.
Watch, enjoy several times because there's a lot to catch in here that has big Lebowski vibes not quite the same, but certainly close.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Good message lacks non CGI action and depth
I get what they were going for. Love over evil. The children are our future. All good messages.
But hallow this is. As all day bale is great but wasted. Thor is a clown. She Thor is a clown, mostly. Valkyrie is now just a side act.
Marvel going for the real easy wins it seems. Story folks story story story. The frame work was there but the sloppy comedic trash that fills 90% of this is sad. Taika you're too busy bruh, take a step back and make the stuff people need not the stuff they want.
Overall entertaining with great action and good acting but a lackluster story and so many stretches to the imagination leave us thinking that Thor world is over or this was just a way to kill Jane and add a side kick? Is that all we got, perhaps.
Never Have I Ever (2020)
I'm mid 30s and this show transcends several generations
I love this show. Never thought I'd say that because I just don't watch these type of shows. Wife loves riverdale and I expected that. Then I watched the first season and realized this is a satire that any teen can understand who was born 1980-2000. And I bet a lot of parents that have kids in this age range get this show and go yep that's sort of how teenage years go.
This show addresses all the challenges teens face without getting nasty about it. But somehow the lessons that are learned are still so real and honest. The producers get props for the casting and the writers props for literally no boring episodes. This show is a blast to past for this 30+ year old, and a refreshing take on what it takes to be a teenager. It's fierce out there. Family friends and education will push kids so hard and they have no roadmap other than the guidance they get from the mentors they have in the form of friends, family and of course boyfriends and girlfriends. Teenage life ain't easy but this show sure is easy to watch and teaches us that life is good but never without it's challenges.
Give me more Netflix!
Licorice Pizza (2021)
There is no milkshake for you to drink here
That's right.
This movie is empty. Young kids with spicy lyrics does not equate to a good film. You can't just set a film to the 70s and make silly stuff happen and then be like bam they fell in love it's so cute.
Lacks depth, lacks any memorable characters, and is literally a story about nothing.
As I always say on IMDb the fan boys should vote this down. "It's a 10 or go to heck bro" for sure you think this movie is that good? PTA has done great work and this is so good it's better than even mediocre? Disagree and yeah give it the thumbs down because you love PTA and can't stand thinking he can make a mediocre film. Well he did and this is not great at all. Watch it 10 times doubt you'll find anything special on that last watch but hey classic director and Oscar nomination better mean a 10/10 and death to all fair reviews.
The Terminal List (2022)
Holy moly that was gnarly
What a show. I mean people say "dark" like they can't see anything. Somewhat true but the real darkness is this show. Everyone is bad for the most part. I give props to Pratt, Jai and Kitsch for solid acting. Don't see much of Riley or daughter but the scenes are good with the family and sad. Overall man what a sad show. The aggressiveness of the plot and the undermining of politics is absurd we all know this could never happen but it has Jack Reacher vibe, meets stone cold killer navy SEAL that's hard to not like. Whoever put together the shooting and fight scenes did a darn good job because that's some of the best I've seen on tv in a while. The way they move and take fire is pretty awesome and the audio was super on point. Like many said, cinematography went all in on the dark filters. Don't hate it but some shots are just game of thrones knight king invasion-esque. Overall though the action is there the story is loose but the bad guys get their comeuppance. Pratt is the never can die SEAL with skills beyond anyones comprehension and San Diego gets blown up. In a fantasy world of military thrillers what isn't to like? I bet the Navy won't love this one but who cares. Dark and dark is okay I suppose this gets 8/10 for mostly action and gnarly story leading the way behind some star actors.
Archer (2009)
Passive aggressive animated spy thriller comedies are the best
What do you get when you take a very serious concept and drop in a bunch of funny writers and hilarious comedians? Archer it would seem.
This show how me through college and had me laughing out loud almost all the time. Some slower episodes but this show always delivered for me.
Need to relax and watch a show that lets you just laugh and relax? Archer is your jam. The writing is so funny and filled with awkward moments and cynicism H Jon Benjamin is amazing as are the whole rest of the cast there's no weak link. Special shout out to the late Jessica Walters who was amazing in this show and quite frankly a fox her whole life. If anyone is most believable it's Malory. Love me some Krieger too. Cyril had to be the absolute tee up for Parnell as Jerry in Rick and Morty.
Woodhouse or bust. This show rocks and always will.
Mad Men (2007)
A broken man hiding in a broken society
Don is broken. But in the outside he's unbreakable.
A slow burn with great story telling and cinematography leads to a top 5 show of all time.
The period piece depicts the pure madness of New York and ad agencies where the winner decides how the consumer will perceive a brand. The product doesn't matter it's the message and the way something is perceived that matters. Not much has changed since then.
Love, war, violence, money, hate and greed all heavy present themes.
Less words are better says Madmen writers. Quiet and subtle moments make the biggest impacts all set alongside the strong but tormented Don.
Superior casting, writing and set results in a show for the ages that stands the test of the times.
Pam & Tommy (2022)
A deeper look at what personal violation feels like
Celebs always complain their life is under a microscope and scrutinized. Yet they are human like us.
This story dives into the infamous sex tape. It's not the absurdity that is revelatory. It's the dive into the impact on a person when they feel violated and taken advantage of. There are things in our life we want to keep personal. And there are people that don't care about that who wish to exploit you for profits.
People are mostly good but some are monsters. Be careful who you trust and if you're exposed learn from how Pam and Tommy handled this. They did their best but even little things can tear apart a relationship - support each other and only trust those you can rely on.
Also, pay for work that you buy. Don't be a stingy fu**.
Poor Pam and tommy. Can't feel bad for celebs but a violation of privacy cuts so deep sometimes it can't be healed. Sad world we live in sometimes.
Jeopardy! (1984)
Been watching since 1992
Alex was a god in our home. May he Rest In Peace. What a legend and so classy. Who keeps working through so much pain and uncertainty? Alex did.
This show molded my brain as a young man in a way that encouraged me to learn more about the world. People say "it's just random facts." Sure but it's an education in people and the contestants, the host or hosts and their story, and offers a variety of topics that let's all expand our knowledge of this great big world.
Myiam, Ken...whoever. They will figure it out but the format of the show and the inquisitive nature of this trivia show that's set the standard is timeless. My kids will hopefully enjoy this show the way I did. It led me to want to learn more about our planet and it's people and creatures. This can never hurt I'd hope.
Jeopardy forever I say! RIP Alex.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Superior story, acting and action - GOT < TLK
The Last Kingdom is my favorite original Netflix series. And furthermore takes the cake over GOT in my opinion. The story, the acting and the action are superior.
While GOT clearly had larger budgets and more production (and dragons which are cool) the writing and historical background here makes this a much more entertaining original series. What a crazy time to be alive, imagine living in early England during the Viking invasions and subsequent inhabitance. This show encapsulates medieval life with all the glory and pain. Death comes to anyone and war is not as simple as it looks. England fights to establish a country while an established Danish population looks to expand their reign. The politics, the religion and the warfare dominate this story but the relationships between characters and the blurred lines of Dane versus Brit are so interesting. Historians will tear apart the details but this is the closest we get to a glimpse of real medieval life.
I will add that I have a deep mancrush on Alexander Dreymon. He's a dang good actor and makes this series.
Don't give up if you get stuck or bored you won't be disappointed. This show is pure entertainment form start to finish with a perfect 5 season run time that doesn't follow the path of poor GOT.
Peacemaker (2022)
Why do I love this so damn much
I feel like if everyone in the US let alone the world watched this show Ukraine would be fine, COVID would be manageable and we may get a viable president.
Perhaps that's over presumptuous but this is ahead of it's times and we all know it. Great story, awesome actors and sweet action. Dude yeah let's go and finish strong. James Gunn is back b***hes!
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
Dexter at his finest with a different vibe
Great acting.
Solid story.
Picked up where it left off and did it's best. Harrison is the end of Dexters dark passenger. He ends the lineage of killing and death we are supposed to think.
Odd ending they needed a way for him to die so they forced it.
A bit of over acting in general and the unfortunate flow of episodes 3-7 being epic then 8-10 being slower and a bit drawn out.
Dex doesn't kill innocents for no reason so Logan's death is vary far from his approach of not getting caught, especially when he just explained why he wasn't guilty
Dexter deserves what he got, it was his time and how better to do it than his son
Great snow scenes and some good bloody heart stabs
Well done overall, goodbye Dexter you got the sendoff we needed.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
It needed to end and yes this was a weird way but it ended
It was a great season, loved the actors and the plot. The ending was not what we all wanted because im sure dex could have sacrificed himself to Kurt and saved his son. Then everyone would have immortalized Dex but he deserved a cold nine meaningless death. All killers get caught eventually due to being cavalier so did Dexter. It's over and it was a good series I loved it. Not the ending I would have chosen but it works.
Val (2021)
Very well done and quite entertaining
I love Val, first of all. I just finished I'm Your Huckelberry.
This film is so pure and raw. The inclusion of his son as narrator is really touching, yet Val somehow draws out his personality even with the help of narration. You can't help but think he's speaking.
I did no expect the film to be so personal and so touching but it was truly inspirational. Once you realize how hard he worked it makes sense: you have to grind in Hollywood just to get your break. And then you have to get lucky. And only then do you get famous. AND even then it's still a competition. We get to see all his classic roles and the bread and butter is his own video work. Recorded by Val and presented here in context alongside most of his great films.
Val is a sensitive and funny guy. But really at the end of the day he is truly an actor, dedicated to the form. His recent sickness has obviously spurred this documentary but do not think this is a pity film. Val embraces life now as he always has. Sure, these home clips are hand curated but from what I see he has and continues to lead a fun and artistic life. Val is like us, he's a human that has tried hard and is happy of what he has done, and also disappointed with his failures as and actor and a father.
Watching this film made me think that life is great, life is precious, and fragile. Money can buy things but time is finite and we must use it the best way we know how. Val is still very much thriving it would appear, despite the loss of his voice, and this just shows that if you can adapt and still maintain your passion for life that nothing can stop the willpower of a hungry, engaged person. Val for life.
Rick and Morty: Amortycan Grickfitti (2021)
It's fun to watch but that's not Rick and Morty we love
Okay fun to watch. Great action and same feel but I didn't laugh...ever. I can tell they want to set up different themes and move on from the recurring concept these last 2 episodes. Totally cool with that. However, random acts of violence and Rick just god moding does get somewhat redundant. I eill never give up because I know they will redeem and drop a few more episodes that are solid. Great storyline that is classic R&M it's just these fillers that didn't used to exist which clutter these last 2 seasons. Overall I'm entertained and love the action and characters. It's hard to be a 10/10 all the time. The integrity is there but the plot is just lacking. Whatever I like it but I know many will want more. Let's see what the.next few hold in store.
Loki (2021)
Good high quality writing means quality watching
Lots of marvel hardcore fans seem to dislike this. It's a change from the norm but that okay. Embrace a unique approach. These actors and actresses excel in their roles. Did you ever not believe any of this despite the fantasy nature. It shines on our favorite mischievous Loki that is so true to his nature but never explored. I'd say the reason this show was made was because Huddleston did such a fine job in the Marvel movies while portraying his pain as Loki that they made this to avenge his character. I know nothing of the comics so this could be an affront to those more knowledgeable but I thought it was good watching. The main actors shine and love the plot.
Cruella (2021)
It was good, Disney doesn't put out much trash anymore
It was well done. Emma stone was solid as were all the main actors. Yes it's ridiculous it's a Disney movie but a darker turn than most. I'd advise making sure your kids know what they will be watching, the concept of death and murder is widely explored. Great period piece honestly I'd be surprised if this doesn't win oscars for best costume and set design. Very very well done on that front. Longer than it needed to be by 20 minutes but deserves none of the critic thrashing. It's a pleasant change for Disney and was enthralling from start to finish. 7/10 film, 8/10 acting, 6/10 story, 10/10 costumes and set.
Kid Cosmic (2021)
Great for kids and adults so dang good
I love this series and so does my 4 year old son. Noire yet modern and such great animation. Music is hyper but the messages are great for kids. "Freaking out, breath it out." We say this to our son and he actually does it. I enjoyed this as much as he did. What a treat.
Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy (2021)
It's what's you expect and Tucci is charming
Ignore the Bordain comparison because this is a different personality and approach. Stanley lived in Florence with his family while young and is fluent in Italian. He knows what he's talking about. He has found some great chefs and regions to focus on and while I do agree that Parts Unknown were more entertaining from a cultural aspect this show is about the food. Tucci is not there to make friends and win hearts he focuses in history and simple recipes often. His voice is soothing and the show is relaxing while informative. When I learn new things about Italian cooking, after having watched pretty much every show out there, then I'm happy.
This is worth your family's time and it's well done. CNN nice job. Tucci nice job. Italy is a beautiful place that lives off of its food, who wouldn't appreciate this show highlighting such a simple concept?
Edit: so sad to hear this show was canceled today. Show business is tough but my family is thankful for Stanley and the production crew for what they presented. The two seasons we got were amazing. We hope this show is resurrected soon on a different network. Thanks Stanley, Italy shined with your help!
Aladdin (1992)
An absolute classic filled with stereotypes
Okay mid 90s and it was okay to hire mostly whites people to voice over for middle eastern actors which deserved the part. This would not fly today and it shouldn't have then. Times have a changed and I like to think of this was made today it would be diverse and inclusive of the culture it represents.
The music is amazing and no one can deny that. The animation and scenes are spectacular. The story board was superbly done, obviously Disney put serious time into the development of the characters.
Best part of this: Robin Williams. So as I said before today he may not and should not have been cast but he was and left this gem. Only RW could represent Genie like this in such a comedic way but with such passion and love. It is likely the best voice over work ever performed in an animated movie. It will go down as his crowning gem outside live action films such as Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting. My goodness he was gifted.
Children and adults can love this film for ages and remember the timeline it was made. Iagos rants are legendary. Enjoy Aladdin for its originality and its score for it is one of Disney's best of all time.
