Biting Satire, and Too Close to the Truth for Certain Girls and Boys
23 October 2023
Certain introverted men 18-25 years old, really need an extroverted girlfriend/life partner/wife like the Jennifer Lawrence character. Although I cringed at the the male lead Percy, I related to Percy and to men like Percy that I know. Likewise, JLaw represents extreme extroverted women that may get lost in the world by the time they get a bit past 22, and never get a degree. The casting impressed me, especially the twist of Percy's father Laird.

I think the issue of Montauk and uber rich vs. The working class is very timely. I tried to get my child into an Ivy and I lacked the money and expertise to get my child in.

How to Make a Boogeyman
10 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The documentary starts with a underreported hit and run of a young mother. At the end, we have the tale of a sick and twisted bully, abuser, and serial killer.

The documentary has excellent interviews of the actual witnesses, precise editing, and great storytelling to maximize audience engagement.

Scooby Doo Meets Victorian England
2 April 2021
I watched episode 1 expecting to see the genesis of Sherlock Holmes' irregulars. Instead I see pretty teenage boys and girls in a supernatural mystery and an irrational Dr. Watson act out an improbable mystery. Sherlock Holmes would have solved the mystery in a minute.

Useless Trite Melodrama and Tropes
5 February 2021
These episodes muddle true facts with melodrama of the loner genius vs. idiot bosses. Also, 1/3 of drama is about a meeting that never happened, and incorrect facts of how Ted pled guilty

Live Action Road Runner
12 August 2020
The little kangaroo mouse was adorable. Yes, this not a documentary. Some infotainment but the melodrama is so over the top that the show is comparable to old cartoons like Road Runner and Tom and Jerry.

Pointless, Weak Horror Film, Better Left for Dead
24 September 2007
The whole premise of this movie whithers in the light of day, the plot holes keep you from buying in, and this derivative work breaks little new ground. David and Amy Fox get lost in the middle of the night in their BMW, and stumble across a quiet gas station and motel. The mechanic magically disables their car while David is watching him. They can drive away in their car, but it stops on down the road. Then the car can run again later in the movie.

The film draws from Psycho and Breakdown, but does not live up to these. The filmmakers give too little motivation for the attackers. These men hang around a dull spot in the country waiting for fools to show up? A couple with a nice BMW don't have GPS navigation on their trip? They take a shortcut off the Interstate and get lost by over 30 miles?

Please send a message to Hollywood by leaving this to die on the shelf.

DVD has No English Sub-Titles, No English Track
5 March 2006
I watched fifteen minutes of this DVD before I gave up. When I rented it, I did not notice the lack of English sub-titles or track. What I did see was a sexual farce on the old deal with the devil plot. The action and special effects somehow reminded me of Benny Hill, but without Benny's music. The movie focuses on a 5,000 year old man, Alonso. He made a deal with the devil to live 5,000 years. Alonso wants to have sex with as many women as possible. He tries to negotiate a new deal to live longer. I wish that they could add sub-titles to this DVD to make it more accessible. That it lacks the sub-titles leads me to doubt its overall value.

Disappointed, not Worthy of High Rating
25 February 2006
The Weather Man left me disappointed and feeling cheated. The movie is set in Chicago, but the weather is unrealistically dreary. Nicholas Cage gives us Robert Spritz. Robert Spritz is a man-child: immature and underdressed for a successful Chicago weatherman. His children have problems with drugs and obesity. Michael Caine plays Robert's father, David Spritzel, a Pulitzer Prize winning author. Robert feels inferior compared to his father, and struggles to live up to his father's legacy. Grandfather David interferes with the raising of Robert's son and daughter, even going directly to Robert's ex-wife on an issue. The movie sets up these characters, and throws all sorts of calamities at them as a metaphor for life's unfairness. For me, the plot does not lead to the ending; it is too much of a reach. I did not connect with the characters and their problems. I cannot recommend this movie to you.

200 Year Old Soap Opera
14 February 2005
Vanity Fair places us in London and France 200 years ago. We witness the trials and tribulations of poor Becky Sharp and her friends and enemies. I did not read the book, so I must report on the movie merit's only. I feel asleep twice during the movie, and felt no urge to go back and catch up. If I want a soap opera, I'll watch them on TV. Regardless of Thackeray's work, this set of characters was thinly sketched. I did not connect to any of the characters. The production did an erratic job of putting us into the period, as it took me 30 minutes to make out the era. I would not recommend this movie for most people. If you enjoy period pieces and soap operas, this is just the movie for you.

Great Summer Kids' Movie
11 June 2004
Our seven year old son has read our collection of Garfield comics, and waited months for this movie. He loved it! Our children and the other children in the theater yelled, "Kitty, Kitty" whenever they saw Garfield. Bill Murray played Garfield perfectly. Breckin Meyer and Jennifer Love Hewitt played their straight lines subtly and well. The plot was fine, too.

This movie is not an adult crossover like "Finding Nemo", but is a well done children's movie. We will recommend this movie to our friend with a three year old. The only objectionable part is the use of a shock collar on Odie and a bad guy. We appreciated the lack of potty humor and adult language.

Boring and Exploitative
5 February 2004
The movie's slow pace put me to sleep. I did not connect with the characters. The plot compares poorly to a Harlequin romance. The movie only makes sense as a romanticized and exploitative history piece. With the nude scenes of 12-13 year old Brooke Shields, I do not think this movie passes current standards of child pornography.
