Apocalypse Pompeii (2014)
The ultimate disastrous movie
Wow, where to start... This is by far the most horrible, pathetic movie I have ever seen. While the plot itself could actually work, everything else was a plain disaster! The acting is horrendous. Extremely shallow, it does not feel real at any point. The 'special' effects are a huge laugh too. They are so pathetic and fake that they could come from a 1980's movie, most certainly not from a movie published in this year! Just about everything looks fake. The volcano explosions, the falling rocks, heck even the the tumbling stones are clearly plastic or whatever. Some weird things going on too... when the hot air gush was happening, you see those people vapourize. Yet there's still green leaves on the trees?? At the end, the survivors are in the basement when the lava appears. Within a couple of minutes they are up on the roof, and the lava floods the roof. Come on people, lava crawls up the stairs and floods the building? It's just ridiculous in every way. It was obvious from the first moments that this was going to be a horrible movie, but I forced myself to watch it all and see if it would get any better. But instead it just got worse.
To say it in short, if you want to have a laugh at how pathetic this movie is, then watch it. Otherwise, do not bother please. Without a doubt the most disastrous movie ever!
The Croods (2013)
Most enjoyable, for young and old(er) :)
This was a really pleasant surprise! I love computer generated movies in general, but hesitated about a story set in prehistoric times. Why? Not sure really, I guess I just didn't think it could be very interesting. Mind you, I have always had a huge interest in history of any kind. While much of this movie is of course largely pure science fiction, it does get the basics across. In a crude (crood?) way, it paints a picture of how cavemen lived, the dangers they had to endure, and possibly most importantly, that there had to be individuals who were not afraid to try NEW things. Without that adventurous nature by our ancient ancestors, I doubt mankind would exist as we know it now. The graphics are amazing, the storyline is fun and never gets boring. In short, a lot of fun to watch, a kind of a combination between cavemen and modern society. Highly enjoyable for anyone, I would say :)
Dead Mine (2012)
Been there, done that, seen that...
I can be pretty short about this. While the general idea of the script is fine, it reminds me too much of other movies such as 'The Descent' and 'The cave', which in fact are WAY better! Trying to reinvent the wheel mostly does not work, and it does not work here either. Yeah OK, the script is different, but the main idea is the same: flesh eating/killing monsters in some sort of cave. The acting is mediocre at best. To be honest, it's hard to come up with a decent review, as there is very little to say about this movie. I personally found this rather boring, not innovative and a waste of time. I think giving it 5 stars is being very generous.
The Descent: Part 2 (2009)
Not as bad as most people say by a long shot
** Lots of spoilers ahead, please be warned!! **
I can understand the reaction of those who do not like this sequel compared to the original. However, I don't agree. You really need to look at the deeper context here. As with everything in life, there's believers and non-believers. The non-believers will most often find out that they were very wrong, just like in this movie. Now OK, we all know this is fiction, but open your mind here for a moment. This is partly about survival, and it's generally in human nature to do anything possible to make sure you survive. Just think about what Sarah did to Juno to escape in part 1. Both parts remind me a lot of the movie 'Sanctum' which is pretty similar in that way. But there's also a part about sacrifice, like where Sarah sacrifices her life so that Rios would be able to escape. Sadly though, that is not to be, which brings me to yet another part, the surprise/unexpected ending. I love that kind of ending, when something happens which you did not expect at all, even if it is a sad one. Again, another similarity with 'Sanctum', another must see in my opinion. I loved the original, I loved the sequel. It's just something like 'Do not mess with evil, it will always be around', you know... Personally I found it a very good sequel. I was hesitant to watch it after all the negative comments, but I am glad I did. And believe me, I am usually not a big fan of sequels. I just think you really ought to watch this one ;)
Deep Impact (1998)
A typical all American movie
I read quite a few reviews about this movie before actually deciding to watch it. Having watched 'Armageddon' before, and knowing that these two movies have the same kind of plot, I did have high hopes for it. But having the same plot is where it ends. These two movies are very much different, and in my eyes, 'Deep Impact' is the lesser of the two by a long shot. Yes, I agree that 'Deep Impact' does have its moments and emotions, but honestly, it comes nowhere near 'Armageddon'. The CGI graphics (at the end of the movie) are mediocre, very clear to see it's fake. But what ticks me off the most, and what makes me 'reward' this movie with the grade I give it, is that it's an all American movie. It's like America is the whole world. Nothing is mentioned about the rest of the world. Well OK, at the very end they graciously mention Europe and Africa, and that's it (Oh gee, thank you very much for thinking about us too for two seconds). Apart from that, it's America all the way. One million people can be saved. 800.000 of which are American citizens, the rest are scientists etc... Ummm, and what about the rest of the world eh?? Oh right, yes of course, according to Americans, the whole world is theirs, silly me!!! Well sorry, for me 'Armageddon' is a 100 times better than this movie. It has action, love, emotion, drama, and at least they do not see America as the only country in the world. Don't get me wrong though, I have quite a few great American friends myself, and I do like America itself too. But this is supposed to be a WORLD wide disaster right, not just an American one. Epic fail for me in regards to the plot of this movie.
