The Invention of Lying (2009)
Funny, in theory
This is a clever concept, with some subtle humor. There is also some overt humor that will be enjoyed by people who appreciate the lead actor's style of delivery.
The movie begins very promisingly as I am impressed with the novelty and funniness of the concept. However, midway through the movie, the novelty starts to wear off and the plot becomes quite predictable. I eventually found myself yearning for the movie to end so that I could leave. This bright concept deserved a much better plot.
Despite the above flaw, I rate this movie above average. The first quarter of the movie is definitely worth seeing: it is entertaining and good for social discussion and contemplation.
Good Hair (2009)
A light documentary on an interesting topic
Chris Rock provides a good snapshot of the hair culture of African-American women. Various aspects of the movie are entertaining, amusing, or saddening, depending on how one views them.
I have heard people criticize the movie's lack of depth in the analysis of topics like economic exploitation with regard to hair products, and sociological issues around the use of these products. However, such detailed analysis would not be very meaningful without the general background that is provided in this movie.
This movie was a good, light documentary on a topic that interested me and had not been discussed before.
