Calla (1999)
Enjoyable if you Don't Read the Movie Description or Know Anything
It's a little cheesy, and kind of superficial. Honestly, I can't feel great about romances where you confess your undying love for someone you don't even know, or even talk to. I get accused of being superficial, but this is a little extreme. But since I'm superficial, admittedly the movie is good for eye candy and something to do on a weekend. Would I watch it again? No. I need movies with more substance, instead of long pauses, sighs and unexpressed longing. It might have been less predictable and more enjoyable if they hadn't explained everything that was going to happen in the movie description. Sheesh.
Miss Austen Regrets (2007)
I REGRET watching this!
I don't like overly negative reviews, but I stayed up late to write this because I was so let down. I read the reviews and selected this extremely carefully. I'm a fan of period movies, a good story line, drama and clean, cute romances.
What a disappointment!! The whole story was just about some immature, cheeky blond girl that is overly eager to marry any fellow that comes along. She and her aunt Austen, worry about being burdens to their families. Every time a guy comes along the movie doesn't spend any significant time on them, and suddenly disappears. Then some new guy comes along but then he's gone too. ??? They are all weird, eccentric or just plain jerks. The rest of the movie consists of Jane moping because she can't find the ideal husband.
The only reason I gave it a 2 out of 10 is because I liked the costumes and pretty horses and estates. Nicely filmed, but most period movies are.
If you enjoy cute romances like "Emma" or "Pride and Prejudice" or even the "Lost in Austen" series - you will really hate this movie. I don't know anything about Jane Austen's real life, but some even complained it wasn't wholly accurate. So I can't say this is for Jane Austen fans or anyone for that matter.
There was no eye candy, no romance, and not even an interesting story. I suffered through the entire movie because I was hoping to redeem the precious time I had already wasted, by at least having a good ending. The ending is really abrupt and completely unsatisfying. Like the film makers just threw their hands up and gave up! Even though I'm an advocate of "clean" movies, this is not worth watching even once...
The Ultimate Life (2013)
Would definitely watch again!
It's probably not something that would blast the box office open, but its a notch above others that I've seen. It's definitely worth watching. I enjoyed this movie enough to write a review because:
1) It's totally CLEAN. Absolutely nothing lewd or inappropriate. I would watch a movie for this alone, given how rare it is. 2) Plenty of amazing looking guys, yum. :) 3) A positive, not overly cheesy, message. At first, I was worried it was gonna be one of those dogmatic, preachy, "Christian" films or something... 4) The film leaves a "feel good" feeling that stays with you. 5) It's good enough to watch again, with family or friends. Nothing too scary for the young kiddos. 6) Pretty decent, interesting storyline and plot, definitely wasn't bored watching it and rooted for the characters the whole way. 7) Has a good, satisfying ending, and not depressing. I hate movies where you feel bittersweet and left hanging at the end. 8) Was really beautifully shot for an "average" movie. Wait, maybe the movie wasn't so average, after all, haha.
You won't regret watching this, unless you're just not into sweet romantic, inspirational, rated PG family films. :)
