Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964)
the exciting, genuine predecessor to star trek...
"voyage to the bottom of the sea" was the sixties' imaginative precursor to "star trek" in many ways. an artistically beautiful and super-capable sci-fi craft, launched into the great underwater frontier of our great oceanic world, still unappreciated in imagination as well as reality. yes, to be a kid at these times was an incredible blessing, and the series came on as really tremendously welcome relief to all the, well, too-many episodes of gun smoke and andy griffiths. it was much better to see the nuclear powered "Seaview" launched and ready to tango with anything the enemy could come up with, either alien or under-water monster. yes, the dramatic rapport between admiral nelson and captain crane was special, much like the descendant admiral picard and "number one." nostalgia – hope netflix puts it on, or i can find the DVD set around these parts of western canada.
24: Day 5: 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. (2006)
a good program goes dumb..
i've gone five seasons in this series without missing one show, but this one is so stupid i wished i had. as someone who worked for police at both airport and police HQ of a major metropolitan area, i was flabbergasted at the moronicity of the writers on this one. when told they can move in at anytime on the terrorists, the writers try and make this look believable as jack sits on his tush because of a president who is a coward and no one else has the moral courage to stop known terrorists from releasing a deadly nerve gas on a shopping mall in the unlikely event that their chances are any better after they have been complicit in the cruel deaths of potentially thousands of shoppers. this was really, REALLY ridiculous. I do not know of any leaders of police, Intel, or Emerg services who would have let this happen. ANd i just read the reviewer who agreed with the ''manly thing'' (read in actual point of fact - cowardly) to do because some dipstick POTUS who can't make ANY decisions and a brand new fat little neocon substitute ''leader'' (read - frightened yes man rear seat QB) at CTU decide to let hundreds of people suffer and die right in front of themselves! What a cockamaney FARCE this one was and if i didn't think the usual writers were coming back with some sanity i'd have trashed the whole series along with this - the dumbest and stupedist episode ever written for a major series!
Angel of the Skies (2013)
Heroes, Not Hollywood
I've met real life heroes of the Battle of Britain, DFC winners, like the chap who went up after losing his legs. There may be some technical problems such as accurate equipment, but for an independent film, its actually 'bloody' good. There are some remarkable realism of character portrayed here, and because of this the film succeeds in being deeply moving. And all the more because it is not Hollywood slick. Its a humble film, non-pretentious and because of this you really end up caring about the characters involved. It breaks some Director rules: it needed to pick up the pace in its dialogue, but the characterization level is excellent. If anyone is experienced with many of German blood, the SS officer here is very good: its the way it was and therefore when you know that it is very chilling. Lots of the actors get the military mannerisms remarkably accurate here, right down to the correct angle of their hats. I suspect that equipment inaccuracies can occur when the budget is limited and the Director had to make do. These are heroes not in the Hollywood mould but as they were in real life, flawed at times and yet sometimes even though making mistakes, sometimes costly, they were ready to do great things for one another. So much is owed by our young generation to those who gave up their lives in this great conflict of good and evil, so that our democracies might survive. I suspect that those who are so dissatisfied with this film are equally dissatisfied with life, because the realistic effort of Angel of the Skies is very high. 7 out of 10!
Babylon 5: Spider in the Web (1994)
spider in the episode
this introduced a stupid idea into the Babylon 5 matrix. It also went "stupid" with a completely fallacious and juvenile breach of security on Babylon 5. The zombie assassin takes out one of the parties to a corporate meeting. Next, Miss Winters becomes the target, yet this dumb episode continues without Babylon 5 Commander and security not knowing enough to even question all three parties to the meeting and give a guard to all three as well. Then the Commander let's tell of the Black ops going, on at the height of his (poor acting) voice with the door wide open. Conclusion: Good series, but this particular episode should have never been written let alone accepted!
