Compulsion (2016)
3/10
All the ingredients but no skill to put them together
12 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie sounds intensely interesting but was so boring I started to Wikipedia the real history of the villa while watching it.

Great story line set-up: writer of erotic memoirs sees old bf who apparently is a dark bad dude. She dumps current dude to indulge in same old type of weekend (one last time) then goes back to life trying to stay away forever but its told so badly you don't know thats the story till after trying to piece together what they were trying to do. 3/4 in you still think its the beginning of the movie and are trying to figure out what is going on.

Then here's the thing given their world and accepting their premise I have no idea why hes this intensely bad dude, why shes crying and freaking out and conflicted about the whole thing, why the current dude is lame and hated and boring, why the dancer is so innocent and beloved. I just do not get it.

The setting is beautiful, the women are beautiful, the men are acceptable, the clothes are striking but they even messed that up. Its like they used too much HD and I can see the actress's bags under her eyes her varicose veins her spot of bad skin from past acme. For an erotic film, give me a fantasy I have bad skin and past acme thats not why someone would be interested in this film.

The clothes too while they were invested in them and are erotic and striking, clearly the director didn't know how to photograph them so they are there but are presented like a catalogue and everything was shot soooo close, no I do not need to see the hair ties in her hair I'm good.

Also the villa, the internet has more interesting and sweeping views, they could have done so much with but did not.

Even the dark crazy surreal scenes were...just eh not so much. At the very least they could have used a good soundtrack but atlas no on that as well.

Prefect amount of seriousness, fun, and episodes
6 October 2018
The characters are ridiculous but unlike other shows they exist in a reality that isn't ridiculous so the characters know they need to shape up and they are not allowed to get away with their flaws.

Well the two main leads do at least. It reminds me of the one time early in my career I got sent to "Interpersonal Training" and full of self-righteousness and indignation I thought that the training wasn't going to change me but the trainer, the other forced participants, and content were so ridiculous that I walked away not wanting to be associated with any of those trainwrecks. Like the two main leads, I did not become prefect but at the cost of loosing my job I made sure I was better than the other more ridiculous humans involved and realized that I needed to. I don't think I would have watched another season. The premise had no legs and the more ridiculous characters would have become too much. However, for a short and sweet one season everything in a neat little bow (no matter how convoluted), a one-case run was good.

Inaccurate but who cares
6 October 2018
Inaccurate professionalism: from the function of her ridiculous clothes that hey if you're a tv show throwing out professionalism at least go stylish (not trite circulation cutting dress that shows off everything)

To her shoes To the way she treats her staff To how she treats her boss, she literally calls her boss a word this page wouldn't let me use because it was considered an offensive word (think women of the night) then HER BOSS apologizes and the male co-workers just kind of shrug too because that is how women in the workplace act. All excused behavior because she good at her job WHAT?

To how much she is involved in the case To how much weirdness and uniqueness each body has that somehow relates to the case. Ah she solved the case because the victim has one toe shorter than the other!

She once solved a case because a black woman was super skinny wore a skimpy dress and had hair extensions. Meanwhile, the actress is the same weight, wears just as skimpy clothes and obviously dyes her hair--but its okay because shes a rich white women.

But it is simple and fun, even though the lead is a women it was clearly written and directed by skivvy men, that is to say when her male staff is featured, the supporting caste, are quite enjoyable even her ex husband who of course in every other show is a horrible person we're suppose to like and I do. Even though they did try the whole he was such a saint because he gave up his successful law career in CA to be a successful lawyer in Philly and now he has a shot to be successful unlike what he is now?? That made me want to throw up in mouth a little, like they wanted to be feminist so they put in a female lead but decided that let them do whatever they wanted in and couldn't let feminist get away too much with the moment in the sun so they put in a long drawn out #SometimesMenToo story.

But hey fun

Taxi Brooklyn (2014)
5/10
Beyond the taxi thing, the premise is that there are only 3 cops in the city
6 October 2018
So maybe not literally, but it starts out fairly simple cops and robbers show with a well crafted premise of how this taxi driver gets involved. They try and extend it with a broken foot but eventually they just give up. But by that time you'll love the driver so much you are willing to overlook it. But the problem happens because it jumps to international/gang/mob/dirty cop/revenge for a slain father/ detective being targeted/consultant being targeted stuff like they all do---except this one does it ALL. Not to mention does it ALL in the first season.

I mean I guess that is not too much of a stretch since apparently there are only 3 cops in all of Brooklyn. In none of the episodes is another cop ever available. Seriously these 3 cops a consultant and a corner (and I guess the detective's useless FBI ex husband who just goes around swooping in and arresting the wrong suspect) are literally the only security personal in all New York City ferries, airports, apartment/office buildings, ports your name it. They run/drive from boarder to boarder of Brooklyn all in the nic of time sometimes too late, because they are the only ones who could do it.

The lead has to use a taxi because there's not a second cop to drive (oh sorry she furrows her brow too much and no one wants to work with her. Well she does punch her ex husband a little too much #mentoo?). The only time another cop comes up is when they get shot in the first 10mins. At one point someone gets stabbed at the freaking airport like on premise and while struggling for calls the consultant because you know their one friend works with the three cops in the city. Its a cute cast, and a cute premise, with a cute french speaking guy, and a cute female lead, with a cute pixie cut that somehow turned into the Borne Identity overnight. 5 out of 5 for the cute fun show that should have done a cross over with Brooklyn 99; zero starts for the Borne Identity done in 30mins
