Gladiator (2000)
One of the greatest scenes of all time ...
"My name is Gladiator.
How dare you turn your back on me? Slave!
... father to a murdered son. husband to a murdered wife. and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
Amazingly well written, well acted, well directed and well produced, with OUTSTANDING sets.
Russell Crowe definitely earned the Best Actor award for this work. The moment he killed his opponent in the arena and shouted to the crowd, "Are you not entertained?" ... then spat on the ground with disdain ... I knew I was witness to one of the most powerful performances of all time.
Joaquin Phoenix was truly twisted - as if murdering his father, the Emperor, was not enough - there is the wicked sexual attraction for his sister ...
Loved this movie. See it ... often.
Yanks (1979)
Exceptional wartime romance
Those of us who have seen some of the more recent wartime romance movies (e.g., Pearl Harbor) will be eternally grateful for this well-done picture with its ensemble cast. I liked it so much that I bought a copy on DVD.
This was the first time that I had seen William Devane and Lisa Eichorn in a movie, and I believe their performances were excellent. When William Devane, as the Captain, busts the NCOs for their conduct, it was the height of wartime realism at a human level.
I loved the little nuances ... the mother wrapping the string around her hand after she receives the gift of a cake from Richard Gere ... the little boy and the bicycle ... the steam rising up around the train at the end ... excellent touches ...

The new King of Westerns
Tom Selleck is the reigning king of Westerns, and this movie, while set in Australia, has the good guy/bad guy code down pat. I have seen it probably 25 times, and each time I find something that I missed the last time I watched it. I love Laura San Giacomo as crazy Cora, and Alan Rickman once again steals the show as a villian. It is definitely one of the best action flicks in the past fifteen years ...
