A Good Year (2006)
Understated modesty
This film is quite emotional and powerful. Didn't read the novel, so can't compare with that.
Simply put this film tells the story of a man, Maximillian, and his estranged relationship with his uncle, a passionate and wise man. After his uncle passes away, he should decide if he wants to be in the the business spot-light or follow his uncles passions and obsessions.
The screenplay is evenly paced without many twists and turns. Witty whimsical dialogs and some beautiful ladies lighten up what should have been a boring drama. Will be a joy to watch in a slow evening, perhaps without company to appreciate it most.
Chaos Theory (2007)
Emotional, powerful and unforgettable
The story itself isn't too emotional at all. Afterall guys don't mind fathering somebody else's child. But the script and screenplay is fantastic in that we can actually feel what the characters feel. Taking something so every day and making you think about chaos is surely extraordinary.
The characterization is too perfect but still without all the drag that always goes together. Ryan Reynolds, Emily Mortimer and Stuart Townsend are great in their roles especially Ryan. He didn't overreact even a bit and i would say that this is definitely one of the best roles that he did. Stuart is his charming self and Emily, seamless.
Also it is not a tragedy. It is so beautifully balanced on the edge that you don't end up weeping at the sad scenes or laughing at the many whimsical jokes. Instead you end up thinking a lot about it after, with a weight in your heart.
I'll surely remember this for a long time. As far as the ratings go, a drama doesn't get any better than this.
I Am Number Four (2011)
Mediocre on all counts....except individual performances
To be fair this movie is better than expected. The screenplay would have done a RomCom proud, but it isn't bad at all. But what lets the movie down is the lack of even a single standout performance. If i had to pick the best then i would say Timothi Olyphant who shelled out a standard fare.
The performance of Ms. Agron is quite pathetic. She reminds me of Kristen Stewart. Both only have a small repertoire of reactions and they surely don't do justice to their characters or the work done by the crew. Alex Pettyfer...what i expected, below par. And why is Teresa Palmer talking with a tune?.
To sum it off, this is an action flick that you can take your girlfriend to. But both may end up regretting going to it. So i give it 4 stars, to those who didn't show their face on screen.
City of Angels (1998)
touching, romantic......
this is by far the best film in the romance category that i have ever seen. Makes you feel light in the end...
The story itself has substance and imagination. Couple this with decent screenplay and just the two perfect leads for these roles that you can find today. The soundtrack and the background score were fitting and i couldn't have asked for more.
I have not seen the original or read any background materials regarding this movie, and i don't intend to. Discounting the comparisons to the originals that predate me,this movie is one of the best when i consider only the 2 hours that i spent watching it.
Bob Funk (2009)
Good acting ,thoughtful dialogs and...Nothing else
This is a comedy that is not funny (not a romantic comedy either). So if you are hoping to have a good laugh look somewhere else. This movie is about how a salesman ,who lives doing no good to others or himself ,comes to terms with his life. The screenplay wanders pointlessly in the middle-the character Ron seems to be a mere add-on for convenience.
Then why the 3 stars?.Well the acting by both the leads and Jemison(Less detailed character but much expressed in action) props things considerably.Dialogs are also a plus-expressive ,thoughtful and funny sometimes.
Professional critics may call this mediocre but anyone looking for an entertaining time kill will be disappointed. The DVD cover says this is Rachel L Cook's best film after 'She's all that'.In my opinion both are crappy films this one worser than SAT.If you are a Rachel L Cook fan then you gotta look at 'scorched'(2002).
Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009)
Some songs are okay though!!!.
Disappointing to see Disney falling below standards. The story-looks like it was written for a half hour series and feels a bit too stretched. But the screenplay was even worse-was supposed to be a musical comedy i think-does not hit the mark-was not impressed by humor at all.Humor in form of caricature of a character by mannerism may have worked on TV but in a commercial movie it fails miserably.
Then the acting...except a few in the supporting cast acting was below ordinary and in case of the lead-terrible.Lines-again,changes in intonation is supposed to be subtle to have a lesser impact on actors and maximum impact on the audience-prolonged usage kills the joke and the joker making acting look poor.
Having songs for 20-25 mins of the play time helps matters though.A couple of numbers are hum worthy.Must have been a made for TV movie with a small budget. We have seen the HSM franchise move from TV to the screens.Looks like this will have to move the other way around.
